As I think back to my early years, I can remember the teacher asking each of us that probing question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" It was an overwhelming question to be asked. There were potentially so many options, but my vocabulary was limited to those things in my world I was familiar with: fireman, policeman, nurse, or Doctor - without any idea of what it really took to become one of those things. Education then sent me on a journey of exploration and discovery, until at the end of high school (supposedly now, all grown up) the question was asked again, only in a different way: "What are you going to major in?" It was believed by this time I had lived enough to really know what I wanted to do. And yet, after thirteen years of education, exploration and study, no one ever asked me what I was called to do, let alone what God was calling me to do. I believe there's a difference between pursuing what we want, or chasing our dreams, and pursuing our calling. Both can be exciting. Both can involve exploration. And yet the fundamental difference between the two is that pursuing what we want looks to fill our lives with something that will make our lives meaningful. Discovering what we are called to do gives our lives purpose. Pursuing what we want invites us to discover something that we like to do. Discovering our call may lead us to discover things we didn't know we liked, but were well suited for, even created for. I believe that' sway (though now, somewhat hackneyed) we're reminded by God's word: For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. (Jeremiah 29:11/NRSV) In discovering God's call upon our lives, there seems to be a more intentional outcome than the questionable outcome of just pursuing our dreams. With God's plan, doors may be opened that appeared closed. Opportunities may present themselves that originally seemed impossible. And, there will be a powerful sense that our lives are being directed and not the result of luck or good fortune. Additionally, there will be the unique use of God's spiritual gift present in our lives of service. I'm assured by this because Paul's writings suggest: Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:4-7/NRSV) There are many young people who will embark upon their educational journey trying to discover what they want be, without ever being asked what they were called to do. And (at the end) they will have pursued their dreams and, perhaps, lived them, finding their lives meaningful, and some would even say purposeful. Yet, they may have never discovered God's plan or purpose for their lives. Many people have lived their entire lives never asking the question, "What is God's call on my life?" Many people of faith have spent years of service in the church without ever answering or pursuing God's call. The thing about God is that it's never too late. With God a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years is as a day. I've answered God's call on my life. I pray you can answer yours. 3 OUTREACH/MISSION COMMITTEE NEEDS YOUR HELP TO CHOOSE MISSIONARY At a spring Church Council meeting, the Outreach/ Missions work area was tasked with the responsibility of faithfully choosing a foreign missionary to support. Our committee has selected six young adults as possible Missionaries for our church to support. They were chosen from 43 young adults between the ages of 30 and 40 who were commissioned in Atlanta by the United Methodist Church to give two years of service as "missionary fellows" in places quite different from those to which they were accustomed. The covenant we make for our missionary choice is to pray for the missionary regularly, to learn of the work being done, and to know something about the people with whom he/she is surrounded. The missionary will be informed about our church and asked to pray for us. We are all "standin" in the need of prayer!! This Sunday Kay Reid will have biographies of these six missionaries available for the adult Sunday school classes. In addition, there will be bulletin inserts with the missionary bios and a place to cast your vote. When you have made your decision, check the name of just one mission fellow on the bio sheet. When you are ready, place your selection in the offering plate, hand it to Kay Reid or anyone available from the office staff. If you prefer to take the pages home to think about, and pray over the names, please feel free to do so, or you can find a complete biography on these six fellows by going to Our-Work/Missionaries-in-Service. The six fellows the Missions committee has selected to vote on: Edmund Melusi Makowa Donwayne Cogay Joseph Russ Jessica Stewart Yvonne Jay Colebra Agduyeng Dorcas S. Ewoodzie We would like to have your selections no later than September 11, Your input is both needed and appreciated. Kay Reid, Outreach/Missions Chairperson Thank you What an exciting and happy 97th birthday I had. Thank you for the cards and flowers and especially for the many who came to visit. There were 39+. Giving stocks, bonds, and mutual fund shares that have increased in value (and which the donor has owned for more than one year) provides greater tax benefits to the donor than giving cash. Not only can the donor deduct the full market value of the securities but also avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation. If you are interested in making a gift of appreciated securities please contact a member of the FOUNDATION or call the church office, UMW Collecting for Bluejacket-Flint Elementary Healthy snacks for the Special Ed and first graders such as Cheez-its, Goldfish, Teddy Grahams, granola bars, peanut butter crackers in individual packages are needed. Jackets, coats, gloves, sweatpants, socks and underwear are also welcome. The collection box is outside the Chapel. The UMW appreciates all of your contributions.
