1 November, 2018 We are reminded that hate-filled violence knows no bounds whether a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, a Christian church in Charleston, or a Jewish synagogue In Pittsburgh. As people of faith, we are bound together not only in our mourning, but also in our response. Dear Sisters and Brothers, I write to you with a broken heart for the lives lost, wounded, and shattered by horrific hatred and violence at Tree of Life Congregation this morning. We join our Jewish neighbors and enter into mourning for all that has been lost. In our grief, God is our comfort. "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). From Pittsburgh to Portland, and around the world, Jews are living in fear. Anti-Semitism is on the rise. Public acts of hatred and bigotry against Jews are commonplace. As Christians, and particularly as Lutherans, we deplore and reject this bigotry. "We recognize in anti- Semitism a contradiction and affront to the Gospel, a violation of our hope and calling, and we pledge this church to oppose the deadly working of such bigotry, both within our own circles and in the society around us" (1994 Declaration of the ELCA to the Jewish Community). Therefore, in this tender moment of grief, let us reach out to those whose hearts are most broken our Jewish neighbors. I encourage you to contact your local synagogue, or your Jewish colleagues, friends, and family members, to share your words of care, support, love, and protection. There may be specific acts you might offer to demonstrate your care, such as when the members of Faith Lutheran Church surrounded Congregation Beth Israel of Chico, California, serving as Shomrim, or guardians, as they observed Yom Kippur following a hate crime in Such simple acts can go a long way to demonstrate our love, as an extension of God's love. LINE DANCING Everyone is invited to an evening of fun with Jack Cranshaw, who will demonstrate his line dancing moves on Friday, November 9 th at 7:00 p.m. Couples and singles are equally able to participate. Everyone is welcome to bring a friend! 2018 SANTA LUCIA FESTIVAL The Santa Lucia Festival will be held on Sunday, December 9 th at 4:30. There will be a program followed by a Swedish Smorgasbord. We continue to send Pray For notes and maintain the children s bags. We will be sending thank you notes to everyone who provided refreshments this summer. Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, November 4 th between services in conjunction with the LCW. HELP THE FAMILY SHELTER The LCW is again sponsoring a collection of items for the children at the Family Shelter in Downers Grove for their Christmas shopping weekend. The collection begins on Sunday, November 4 th and continues through December 2 nd. The children range in age from 6 months old to 11 years old at present. Gift ideas for the children are: Hats, scarves, mittens; blankets for babies and toddlers; pajamas for all ages; baby toys, children's books (Spanish and English) puzzles, educational toys, games, Lego blocks, art and craft supplies; sporting equipment such as soccer balls, baseball gloves; dolls (Caucasian, Black and Latino); youth jewelry. Suggested mother s gifts are: Gift cards (Target, Visa, Wal-Mart, Jewel, Aldi, gas cards or movie tickets); pay-as-you-go phones or cameras; hats, gloves, mittens or halfgloves/mittens, scarves, socks, slippers, winter jackets; personal items such as shampoo, deoderants, body wash, bar soap, loofas, facial masks, facial wash, body lotions, nail polish and remover, new cosmetics such as lipstick, eye shadow and blush; purse size calendars, and/or small pocket size journals; necklaces or bracelets. 4 FROM ADVOCATE AURORA Diabetes and Heart Disease Get Your Zzzz s to Prevent Diabetes! The study found that not enough sleep leads to a reduction in the sensitivity to insulin, which impairs the ability to regulate blood sugar. A lack of sleep has been tied to weight gain, but with this new information sleep can also be equated to metabolism. Sleep is obviously an important piece in overall health, says Lauren Saujani, nurse practitioner at Advocate Dreyer Medical Clinic in Aurora, IL. This adds another piece to the puzzle for us to discuss with our patients and stress the importance of a total healthy lifestyle. Regulating blood sugar levels is a crucial component of monitoring diabetes. When people are sleep deprived, the body urges them to rest and as a result their body makes it more difficult to break down the food, causing a spike in blood sugar levels. Everything that goes into your body when you are diabetic can make a huge impact, says Saujani. While more research is needed, this study gives us a good insight on how we can help those who are at risk for becoming diabetic. Studies have shown that sleep is important to overall health. Now, researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and University of Colorado Boulder have found that a lack of sleep could also lead to an increased risk of diabetes.
