2 Dear Parishioners and Friends in Christ, Our first reading today is very encouraging. In many ways, it is very encouraging because many of us are in the same boat right now with Elijah. So, we can all identify with the prophet and his predicament. Unfortunately, the same Elijah who was courageous against Ahab in his palace and on Mount Carmel; the same Elijah who also witnessed God in the home of the widow, in the years of famine, and in the fire and rain from heaven, suddenly became fearful and discouraged. However, when he thought that all hope was lost, God divinely intervened by feeding and strengthening him for his journey. What do we learn from Elijah today? Simple! We must learn to rest our expectations in God s sovereignty, trusting in his time, divine providence, and protection. Also, another important and encouraging lesson here is that failure does not mean defeat, or an end to our life and journey. In our second reading, Paul reminds us that as children of God, each one of us bears a mark of the Holy Spirit. This spirit is our guide, strength and company in the Journey of Life. So, we must trust and walk with him. Grieving him will make our journey difficult. If we trust and walk with him, he will lead us safely through the rough paths of life. He will lead us to Christ the living bread who nourishes and strengthens us along our journey. Paul tells us how to maintain this relationship with the Holy Spirit. Never have grudges against other, or lose your temper, or raise your voice to anybody, or call each other names forgiving each other as readily as God forgave you in Christ. Further on this Sunday, we continue to read from the Bread of Life discourse found in the sixth chapter of John s Gospel. Recall that we have been reading from this chapter for the past two weeks and will continue to read from it for another two. Today s Gospel begins with a report that the Jews complained about Jesus claims regarding his identity. They knew his family, and they knew he was the son of Joseph. They could not comprehend what Jesus meant when he said that he came down from heaven. Jesus responds to the complaints by saying that only those who are chosen by God will recognize him as the one that God sent. This is a recurring theme in John s Gospel, that God has chosen those who will have faith in Jesus. Jesus talks more about his unity with the Father. He is the one who has seen the Father and, therefore, knows the Father. Those who listen to God will recognize that Jesus is the one sent from God. Those who believe will have eternal life. Jesus concludes with the central element of our Eucharistic theology. He promises that the bread of life will bring eternal life to those who partake of it, and he tells us that the bread of life will be his own flesh, given for the life of the world. In today s reading, we hear Jesus say again, as he did in last week's Gospel, that he is the bread of life. We also hear Jesus add that he is the living bread. Both of these statements help us understand better the gift that Jesus gives us in the Eucharist. We celebrate this gift of Jesus each time we gather for Mass. We believe that receiving Jesus in the Eucharist will lead us to eternal life. The Lord is inviting us to believe in him so that we may have eternal life. Eternal life is to be free from our worries, disappointments, sorrows, tribulations, etc. and this eternal life is going to come when we appreciate the bread of life he is offering us at the Eucharistic table. Just as Elijah received food for his journey and was strengthened so the Lord gives us the bread from heaven to strengthen us in our journey towards eternity. We are pilgrims on earth and the journey is a long distance. Along the way so many things weigh us down, discourage us, and make us disappointed, tired, weak and helpless. At such moments, it is only Jesus, the Bread of Life that can strengthen and sustain us because He is the food for pilgrims like us. Therefore, beloved brethren, have you ever identified your spiritual life as a journey? Have you ever felt weak, tired, disappointed or discouraged in this journey? Then you need to appreciate this unique dimension of the Holy Eucharist as food for pilgrims who are on a journey to our heavenly home. Do not be discouraged like Elijah to continue the journey when you fall or get tired or persecuted or displaced by unfavorable situations. The Eucharist is that bread of life from heaven and it will give you the energy needed for the journey. When we appreciate this bread from heaven by adoration and reception, it is only then that we can really love our fellow pilgrims knowing that we have the same destination heaven, as the second reading (Ephesians 4:30-5:2) tells us. This energy will enable us become friendly, kind and forgiving so that we assist each other on the journey especially the spiritually weak. Therefore, with joy, why not approach the Eucharistic table today to renew your strength for God loves all. Father Francis X. Dias

Father Biju Mission Appeal August 18 and 19, 2018 Missionaries of St Francis de Sales (MSFS) is the second largest men religious working in the missions spread over 14 dioceses of Northeast India. Through parish ministry, education, preaching mission, and social work, they share god's love to the tribal communities. Christianity reached to this region only towards the middle of last century. Today the church continues to reach out to the people through a variety of ministries carried out by the religious. The bishop of the diocese of Aizawl has requested the MSFS to start a Family counseling cum Retreat center at Lengpui, Mizoram. The weekend of 18/19th August, Fr Biju Chennala Kunjukutty, Chaplain at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, a missionary who belongs to MSFS, will be coming to speak about the new mission project. There will be a second collection during all Masses on Saturday and Sunday. If contribution is made through checks, it shall be written to St. Joseph Parish; however please write in the memo: mission coop All contributions will go to building up the Centre. Let us be generous in sharing the gift of love for the good work among the tribal communities of northeast India. 5 The Infant JESUS of Prague The Infant Jesus of Prague statue was in dire need of new garments. Doris Mootz, one of our parishioners, agreed to sew new garments. Doris is a seamstress by trade. The Parish Council of Catholic women paid for the cloth. Doris sewed 4 beautiful capes (red, green, white, gold), in addition to the white garment which goes under the cape.
