2 F r o m t h e P a s t o r s D e s k SPRING FLING 2018, ASCENSION SUNDAY, MOTHERS DAY Spring Fling 2018 is almost here. I want to thank those who responded to support our White Elephant Sale, which is going on now, and our call for volunteers. Of course, we are still in need of your help. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Martha Schumacher in the Parish Office: Please invite your families and friends to come to St. John on May 10-12, Next week is Mothers Day, and we celebrate Ascension Sunday. This is the time for all of us to appreciate our mothers by asking Jesus, who ascends to heaven to bless our mothers with our prayers. I encourage all to donate a Mass offering for your mother. This is the best gift that we can give them on Sunday, May 13 th. Mass intention cards are available in the narthex. Happy Mother s Day to all mothers! This coming Sunday, May 13, is also our Children s Mass. Let us celebrate a special worship and experience with our families at 11:30 AM Mass, especially paying attention to the spiritual needs of the young members of our faith community and for the special intention of our mothers. I thank you for your support of our faith community. The contributions you give through the Sunday offertory collection provide important funding for the operation of our parish church, particularly in supporting ministries and programs. Just to share I find it much easier to give online for my weekly contributions. Please also consider making your contributions electronically through Online Giving. You can make the switch to online giving and your contribution will be made automatically without writing checks. Simply visit our website at and click the Online Giving button in the upper right corner. Through online giving, even if you are unable to attend Mass at St. John during summer vacation, your support continues. Many Blessings to You! Father Pete

Peter lifts him up and says, In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. Cornelius was likely the inspiration for that statement. St. Cornelius is a significant person in the Acts of the Apostles. A documented centurion in the Cohors Italia, he is considered by most Bible researchers as being one of the first Gentiles converted to Christianity. The message, however, applies to all of us, as most of us are indeed Gentiles. It is made clear that Cornelius was a holy and generous man. However, he did not receive the Holy Spirit until he had heard the Gospel from Peter and responded to it. That is what each of us is called to do as well. If we allow the Lord to be an important part of our lives, God will do everything for those who are willing to receive Him. This reading then reports, While Peter was still speaking these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the word. St. Peter is later criticized for entering the house of a Gentile, eating, and then baptizing Cornelius, but in Acts 11 Peter responds, If then God gave them the same gift he gave to us when we came to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to be able to hinder God? God is there for all of us, but we must receive Him and open our lives to Him. Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc. Next Weekend s Celebrants (subject to change) Sat May 12 5:00 PM Fr. 8 MAY 19 Saturday The Outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and begin to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:3-4 Accompanying others on their journey through life, however, means more than just being there. It also means bringing something to the journey, or should I say, Someone who will open my mind and the minds of my fellow travelling companions to the understanding of Scripture as we walk together. Archbishop Lori, A Light Brightly Visible: Lighting the Path to Missionary Discipleship Silent Reflection Novena Prayer for Pentecost Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with your love. Set our lives aflame with your gifts. Grant us wisdom to choose what is good and true; understanding to embrace your plan of salvation; right judgment to act according to your will; courage to share our faith with others; knowledge to live as disciples of Jesus Christ; reverence to respond faithfully to your grace each day; and wonder and awe in your presence. Inspire us with enthusiasm for our Catholic faith. Grant us boldness to proclaim the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ, and help us to bring the transforming power of the gospel to our world. We make this prayer through Christ, our Lord. AMEN. Pray: OUR FATHER, HAIL MARY, GLORY BE, SIGN OF THE CROSS PENTECOST NOVENA to the Holy Spirit for Spirit-Filled Visioning at St. John the Evangelist Parish As we prepare for the Feast of Pentecost, let us ask for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit s guidance upon each member in our community of faith. May we be inspired to more eagerly and concretely embrace our baptismal vocation to be disciples of Jesus, to spread the Good News, to be active in the life and ministries of the parish. Let us pray for a renewed vision of who we are as church in these times and wherever we may serve in the name of Jesus. This Novena is prayed the nine days before Pentecost, beginning on Friday of the sixth week of Easter. Start with the SIGN OF THE CROSS followed by the READING FOR THE DAY. (After the daily reading, continue to the Silent Reflection and Pentecost Novena Prayer found on the last page.) MAY 11 Friday You Will Receive Power But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth. Acts 1:8 As we continually refresh, repair and deepen the image of Christ within us, then what the Church believes and teaches becomes not a burden but a response of love to the One who loved us first and poured out his life in selfgiving love to save us. Then we become his authentic witnesses to our families, friends and co-workers (expressly here at St. John.) Archbishop Lori, A Light Brightly Visible: Lighting the Path to Missionary Discipleship

9 MAY 12 Saturday Jesus Promise of the Advocate When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. John 16:13 We are asking (you) to engage in prayerful discernment so as to dig deeper into what lies behind the numbers: parishioners who have stopped practicing the faith, young people who depart after Confirmation, changing parish demographics, groups in the parish that have not yet been reached, etc. We should approach this process with hope and joy to make our parishes ever more vibrant centers of evangelization, that manifest the attractiveness of the Gospel and the warmth of Jesus truth and love. Archbishop Lori, A Light Brightly Visible: Lighting the Path to Missionary Discipleship MAY 13 Sunday The Need to be Born of the Spirit Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. John 3:5 In virtue of (our) baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples. Every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization; indeed, anyone who has truly experienced God s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love. Each of us should find ways to communicate Jesus wherever we are to offer others an explicit witness to the saving love of the Lord. Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel ##120 and 121 MAY 14 Monday The Spirit Gives Life to Dry Bones Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. Acts 1:8 Every disciple must repent by the regular and fruitful reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and recognize the need for ongoing conversion in his or her life. If we wish to be like Christ and to love what he loves and to reject what he rejects, we should turn, again and again, to the Lord s words in the Sermon on the Mount where he sketches for us a self-portrait. It is that same portrait the Lord wishes to inscribe on our hearts as well. Archbishop Lori, A Light Brightly Visible: Lighting the Path to Missionary Discipleship MAY 15 Tuesday Life through His Spirit If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you. Romans 8:11 Thus, (our) parish (community) must be outward bound,, geared up not just to offer good things and then hope that people will show up, but actively in search of those who need to hear the Gospel, actively trying to make connections with people in the parish boundaries, intentionally inclusive of parishioners and potential parishioners in all their diversity. Archbishop Lori, A Light Brightly Visible: Lighting the Path to Missionary Discipleship MAY 16 Wednesday Understanding Comes through the Spirit Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. 1 Corinthians 2:12 Christ is the Light of nations. Because this is so, this Sacred Synod gathered together in the Holy Spirit eagerly desires, by proclaiming the Gospel to every creature, to bring the light of Christ to all men, a light brightly visible on the countenance of the Church. Lumen Gentium, No. 4. MAY 17 Thursday One Spirit, Many Gifts Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit: and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 We have to be willing to ask how we are responding to the vocation to discipleship we received on the day of our Baptism. Archbishop Lori, A Light Brightly Visible: Lighting the Path to Missionary Discipleship The Lord needs you for His Church. Be active members of the Church, go on the offensive, build a better world of justice, of love, of peace, of fraternity, of solidarity. Don t leave it to others. Pope Francis MAY 18 Friday The Fruit of the Spirit By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. There is no law against such things. Galatians 5:22-23 The Church which goes forth is a community of missionary disciples who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice. The Lord has taken the initiative, he has loved us first. Let us try a little harder to take the first step and to become involved. An evangelizing community gets involved by word and deed in people s daily lives always concerned with fruit, because the Lord wants her to be fruitful. Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel #24
