Gaudete means rejoice. Although Advent is a season of penitence and preparation, today is always set aside by the Church to relax and rejoice in the Lord. All of our readings today deal with Christian joy. This may seem not in keeping with the overall mood encouraged for Advent, but it is most definitely in keeping with what we need to feel, and it is definitely appropriate for those who embrace stewardship as a way of life. Stewardship is, of course, based upon an attitude of gratitude, and today is a day to focus on the joy that results from that gratitude. Father Henri Nouwen was a well-known Catholic priest, professor, writer, and theologian. In describing the significance of this particular day, Father Nouwen clarified the difference between joy and happiness. He said, While happiness is dependent upon external conditions, joy is the experience of knowing that we are unconditionally loved by God and nothing not sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death can take that love away. Joy can be present in the midst of sadness. This joy that is reflected in lives of stewardship was also emphasized by Pope Francis, who said in his homily for Gaudete Sunday in 2014, Today is a day of joy. Rather than fretting about all we have not done or accomplished to prepare for Christmas during Advent, we need to think of all the good things God, and life, has given us. Pray for peace and for the members of our Armed Forces

Catechism Corner Q: What should a person do if a Host is dropped accidentally? A: This accident happens even when the Priest, Eucharistic Minister, or recipient is being extremely conscientious. For example, sometimes the Hosts may stick together because of humidity, or sometimes one just seems to jump out of the ciborium. Without question, for someone who is trying to devoutly distribute or receive Holy Communion, seeing the Sacred Host fall on the floor causes a great pain in one s heart. In this case, the person preferably the Priest or Eucharistic Minister should retrieve it at once, making sure no visible particles are left on the floor. The Priest or Eucharistic Minister may then consume the Sacred Host directly, or isolate it and then after Communion rinse it down the sacrarium (a special sink in the sacristy which empties directly into the ground not the sewer system). Oftentimes, the recipient who dropped the Sacred Host picks it up and consumes it immediately. The scenario prompts a good review: (1) Priests and Eucharistic Ministers must be extremely alert during the distribution of Holy Communion, making sure the recipients consume the whole Sacred Host and immediately retrieving it if an accident occurs. (2) When receiving Holy Communion, a recipient should side-step, still facing the altar, and consume the Sacred Host before turning to go back to the pew. Most communion accidents occur because the person begins walking back toward the pew, looking ahead, rather than focusing on receiving our Lord. Better to pause to receive, adore, and consume the Sacred Host, than to rush like in a cafeteria line and risk dropping it. No one should be facing the pews or walking back to the pews when receiving Holy Communion. Take the time to commune with the Lord received in this precious Sacrament. If you are in the pews and notice a Sacred Host, or even a piece, fall to the floor, you should retrieve it and give it to the Priest at an appropriate time maybe at the end of Communion when the Priest prepares to purify the vessels. Accidents surrounding the distribution and reception of Holy Communion do occur. We all must be very conscious of our actions. Never must we become lax in our approach to Holy Communion; rather, we must always be reverent and even protective, for we have the great privilege of receiving the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Savior truly present in the Holy Eucharist. 8 Catholic Review DECEMBER 2016 Inspiring the Archdiocese of Baltimore Pope Francis appoints two new auxiliary bishops for Baltimore Monsignors Adam Parker and Mark Brennan will be ordained Jan. 19 BY CHRISTOPHER GUNTY PHOTOS BY KEVIN J. PARKS Pope Francis named two new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Baltimore: Monsignor Adam J. Parker, current vicar general and moderator of the curia in Baltimore; and Monsignor Mark E. Brennan, pastor of St. Martin of Tours Parish in Gaithersburg, in the Archdiocese of Washington. The appointments were announced Dec. 5 in Washington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. At the same time, the pope accepted the resignation of Bishop Denis J. Madden, auxiliary of Baltimore since Bishop Madden submitted his resignation on his 75th birthday in March 2015, as is the custom for bishops, but it was not accepted until the appointment of the new auxiliaries. Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori expressed his gratitude to the Holy Father for the appointments of the new bishops, which he called an early Christmas gift from the pope. This is truly a joyous day in the life of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the archbishop said. The bishops-designate will be ordained Jan. 19, 2 p.m., at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Homeland. Bishop-designate Parker was born Jan. 13, 1972, in Cleveland, Ohio, and was raised in Severna Park. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in May 2000 and was made a monsignor in September He will be 45 when he is ordained a bishop. Bishop-designate Brennan was born Feb. 6, 1947, in Boston. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington in May He will turn 70 a few weeks after the ordination. Archbishop Lori said the archdiocese has been blessed by the dedicated service of Bishop Madden. I m pleased that he will continue serving our local church as our beloved auxiliary bishop emeritus, the archbishop said. I am grateful for his selfless service and his willingness to continue serving God s people and I look forward to our continued work together. Life changes in an instant Bishop-designate Parker said he received a call from Archbishop Pierre Nov. 28, telling him that he had been nominated by the Holy Father as an auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese. And then he asked me the question: Do you accept? and I told him that I do accept and I pledged my fidelity to the Holy Father and thanked him for the call, the bishop-designate said. He said he was initially stunned, but Archbishop William E. Lori announces the two new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Bishop-designate Adam J. Parker (center) and Bishop-designate Mark E. Brennan (right), during a press conference at the Catholic Center. noted that there had been rumors he might be chosen. But at the same time, when that call comes and your life changes in an instant really just in the blink of an eye I have to admit it took me a few moments where I just needed to sit down by myself here in the office and consider and pray about what had just happened, he said. Bishop-designate Parker said it was a little hard for him to focus on the rest of his regular schedule of meetings that day. My real desire is to have a real pastoral presence in the archdiocese in addition to my role here as vicar general and moderator of the curia, Bishop-designate Parker said. By that I mean making visits to parishes, celebrating Sunday Masses in parishes throughout the archdiocese, celebrating confirmations which I m really excited about doing and also engaging For fresh Catholic news everyday, visit CatholicReview.org 2016 The Catholic Review. 9 Bishops-designate Mark E. Brennan and Adam J. Parker bless a young family following daily Mass in the undercroft of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore. my relationship with my brother priests at a deeper level. At a news conference in Baltimore announcing the appointments, Bishopdesignate Parker said he is honored to be following in the footsteps of the Apostles, who took to heart Jesus exhortation at the Ascension to Go, make disciples, which he said will become his motto as bishop. Archbishop Lori said he has been blessed to work with Bishop-elect Parker on a daily basis for much of my time since arriving as Archbishop of Baltimore. Bishop-elect Parker is widely regarded by his co-workers and fellow priests and is well-prepared to assume the duties of auxiliary bishop, while continuing to manage the day-to-day operations of the Central Services offices of the archdiocese. and French. The bishop-designate speaks all three languages. The parish has a soup kitchen, a food pantry and a tradition of direct service to people in need. Bishop-designate Brennan said he hopes to bring a love for immigrants to his ministry in Baltimore, noting that as a history major in college, he studied the experience of immigrants especially Italian, Irish and Polish, at that time and later as a priest worked directly with people coming to this country. Bishop-designate Brennan said Archbishop Lori has asked him to be available for the Hispanic community to do what I can to strengthen the ties of the Hispanic Catholics to the archdiocese and to the parishes. So, I m going to have to visit people and talk with people and see what s going on, get to know the lay of the land. Archbishop Lori recognized Bishopdesignate Brennan s four decades of priestly service in a variety of settings, including most recently as pastor of a large parish with a significant Spanishspeaking population. He added, His pastoral leadership and experience working with Spanishspeaking Catholics suits him well for the duties of auxiliary bishop, which include helping to oversee our efforts to grow and care for the spiritual needs of Spanishspeaking Catholics throughout the Archdiocese of Baltimore. At the 12:10 p.m. Mass Dec. 5 in the undercroft of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Archbishop Lori welcomed again the new bishops-designate, concelebrating for the first time wearing the zucchetto a violet-colored skullcap which is one of the symbols of their new office. The archbishop noted that Advent is a time of expectations. I guess you might say the Archdiocese of Baltimore has been going through a very long Advent, as it has waited nearly two years for bishops to be appointed. Let me say it was worth the wait, Archbishop Lori said in his homily. Perhaps your greatest service, in the fullness of the priesthood, is to encourage, to inspire, to lead and to sanctify many priests and deacons and religious and seminarians and above all lay men and women, so that they can be those people, whose faith is so great, and so alive that they are constantly bringing people to Jesus. In a word, you assist me in the primary work of raising up missionary disciples to carry forward the church s mission of spreading the Gospel. Contributing to this article was Erik Zygmont. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE NEW BISHOPS AND THE UPCOMING ORDINATION MASS, VISIT bitly/cr-bishops Total shock Bishop-designate Brennan said getting the call from the nuncio about his nomination as a bishop was a total shock. Considering his stage of life and what he called modest attainments in the priesthood, I was certainly not expecting to be named a bishop by Pope Francis or anyone else. So, it really took me completely by surprise. He said, You don t get much time to react. It ran through my mind, Should I say no? I thought, I ve always tried to do what the church asked of me, so if this is being asked of me now, if I don t have a serious reason to decline, then I think I should accept, so I did. St. Martin of Tours Parish is known for welcoming people of various cultures, with Masses in English, Spanish From left, Bishop-designate Mark E. Brennan, Bishop Dennis Madden, Archbishop William E.
