BAPTISMS Baptism of infants and young children is celebrated on the 2 nd and 4th Sundays. All parents are asked to attend a Baptism Registration session. Also, a Baptism Preparation class for parents of first-born children is scheduled monthly. Advance registration is necessary for the session, the preparation, and the sacrament. Contact the parish office about Baptism of children aged 7 and older. FIRST RECONCILIATION & FIRST EUCHARIST Preparation for children begins in 1st grade, and the sacraments are received in the fall and spring of 2nd grade, respectively. Preparation for adults and older children is done through the RCIA program. Preparation begins in September, and the sacraments are received during the Easter Vigil Mass. CONFIRMATION The Sacrament of Confirmation is offered to anyone in High School who has completed their 8th grade year of Catholic Religious Education. Preparation takes place through the Teens in Ministry program. The sacrament is conferred in October. Confirmation for adult Catholics is celebrated in the archdiocese twice a year. A period of preparation includes prayerful discernment and catechesis. Adults who desire to become members of the Catholic Faith receive the sacraments through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). ANOINTING OF THE SICK & HOME COMMUNION The Anointing of the Sick is available on the second Sunday of the month, following the 9 AM Mass. April 29, 2018 Fifth Sunday of Easter Christine Blake, School Principal X120 cblake@stjohnschoollgv.org Established in 1822, St. John the Evangelist Congregation is a welcoming, worshiping Catholic community, rooted in Jesus Christ, ministering to all, bonded by faith, directed by hope, and growing in love. 2 F r o m t h e P a s t o r s D e s k SPRING FLING, MAY CROWING, PENTECOST, 40 TH PRIESTLY ANNIVERSARY, etc. May is here! There are lots of great events happening here at St. John the Evangelist Church: Our Children s Mass will be on May 13 th, Feast of the Ascension. We invite all parents and ask you to bring your children at 11:30 AM for this Children s Mass and to celebrate the Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary after the Mass Spring Fling is the highlight of the month. Join us, bring your families, and celebrate the famous 2018 Spring Fling, at St. John Long Green Valley. We still need volunteers. Please contact the Office to sign up. You are invited to my 40 th Priestly Anniversary Mass on May 19 at 9:30 AM. Join me in thanking the Lord for my 40 years of priestly ministry. It is a great blessing that I am here at St. John on this 40 th year. May 20 th is Pentecost Sunday. I ask you to pray for 9 days starting May 11 for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit into our Parish community, particularly for a special anointing of the Parish Envisioning Retreat that Parish staff and Pastoral Council members are going to attend. A copy of Novena prayers will be in next Sunday s Bulletin for everyone to use. Please note that we are aware of the inconsistency of temperatures in the church throughout the winter months, and at times the church has been somewhat cold. Rest assured that the two new 750,000 BTU propane-fired boilers are more than capable of producing sufficient heat to warm the church adequately. Eric Schumacher, our Physical Plant Manager, continues to work closely with the HVAC contractor, B. W. Mechanical, Inc., to monitor temperatures and fine tune the system so that the new boilers work with the original 1969-vintage air handlers to achieve the desired comfort level. As we leave the heating season and finally enjoy more Spring-like temperatures, please note that some adjustment may still be needed in the Fall. Also note that no changes to the air conditioning system have been made and therefore no changes to the air conditioning capabilities of the system should be expected. Finally, I wish to THANK ALL OF YOU for your support of the Archbishop s Annual Appeal, Together In Mission. We are still hoping others who have not yet committed to this appeal will do it now so that we can reach the same total as last year of $104K, so that we can receive the 50% rebate of donations made after our goal of $82K. Many Blessings to You! Father Pete

3 5 th Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018 "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. -John 15: 1-8 Welcome... to all visitors. Pray For... the sick of our parish: Lindy Kness, Sunnie Moorman, Jessie Wodka, Carolyn Bayer, Anna Mae Woytowitz, Al Kramer, Jerome Murphy, Susan Rye, Joe Keller, Melanie Creamer, Marge Schoennagel, Harold Campbell, Lawrence & Margaret Donohue... our beloved deceased: Hugh H.T. Brown (son of Hugh and Dorothy Brown), Vincent Pomilio (husband of Rita Pomilio) Sunday s Reflection St. John captures the essence of what kind of love is expected from us toward our neighbor and those in need as he opens our Second Reading with, Let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. Jesus made that point several times in His own teachings. It follows the old adage that, Actions speak louder than words. We have pointed out numerous times that being a good steward requires action. It may be easy for us to come to an understanding of what it means to love one another; and additionally, we may speak of doing it; but the true measure is what we do, how we live our lives. The best examples of stewardship of that we may be aware in our parishes and community involve what we see and experience in others. That is the most effective way to be taught and it is the best way to teach others. Do it and live it. That is John s point, is it not? He continues his instructions in the Second Reading by saying, We should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another as He commanded us. The Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen, who had a great appreciation for the written word, once stated, A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed. The point of Jesus Parable of the Two Sons (Mt 21) in which one son says he will do his father s will, but does not, while the other says he will not obey, but repents and does what his father asked, is quite clear that deeds mean more than intentions.
