7 Pastoral Scene: Thoughts for Armchair Coaches and Players When Because may no longer cut it in answering questions about faith As the weather grows cooler, more of us will settle in to become armchair participants or Monday morning quarterbacks for our favorite baseball and football teams. There are times when, while watching a particularly painful game, the armchair spectators vocabulary can become a bit vivid, earthy, and just down right insulting. Rather than criticize the players on the field with sharp insults, did you ever think of encouraging the team by quoting Bible passages? YES, Bible passages! Here s why. The Bible speaks often of athletic analogies and stories as encouragements for persevering in both training and competition. So, the next time you are tempted to pass a nasty comment of verbal abuse because of a missed field goal, a bad call, or a play that went horribly awry, try some of the following verses. Remember that whether your team wins or loses, God can be glorified through the players hard work and effort. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; He will never leave you or forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:6) And let us run with perseverance the path marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1b) Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary. (Isaiah 40:31) I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13) Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart. (Colossians 3:23) Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:24) And, no matter what the outcome of a football, baseball, or even a basketball game may be, I personally hope the following verse will always be true: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith (Timothy 4:7) even if we didn t win (Sister Helene). Sister Helene There is no unimportant question when it comes to your faith. Remember: Jesus always listened, responded, and even rewarded people who came to him with honest questions! Take a Leap of Faith and ask those questions about: Sacred Scripture - The Bible Revelation, Inspiration, and God s Inspired Word Transcribed Through Human Authors Session 2: October 3, 2018 The Bible - Through the inspired Scriptures, God speaks to us as a loving Father speaks to his children. Growing Our Faith Wednesday, October 3, 2018 Begins at 6:30 p.m. with a light meal in the Cafeteria Please return this Form to the Parish Office or place it in the Collection Basket at Mass Name: Phone Number: Number of Adults: Number of Children: Total Number Attending: 7

8 Career Services Ministry Mondays, 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Are you unhappily employed? Are you between jobs? Do you cringe at the thought of how you answered some of the questions during your last interview? Have you sent your resume out into the universe for jobs you know you are a perfect fit but only received a generic response back (if you got any response at all?) Have you shown up for a job interview with your phone in your hand, gum in your mouth, a Taco Bell stain on your shirt, or sporting flipflops and shorts? If you can answer Y es! to even one of these questions, please consider stopping by the Career Services Meeting on any Monday in the Parish Office Building for some inspiring and free advice. Life is short. What are you waiting for? It s time to acknowledge, embrace, and utilize your God-given gifts! Victoria (216) writerswithspark@gmail.com Many Thanks to the Holy Name Society Pray. Donations Welcomed There are two special, unanticipated projects for which our Church could use some major financial assistance: Artist: Elmer Parolini Church roof over the East and West Naves - $14,000, and the emergency repairs to the Rectory sewer system - $13,300. To date, St. Monica Church has received $8,000 towards the Church roof repairs. Any help with these projects is greatly appreciated. Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Silent Sorrow Mass with Bishop Perez Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. A Mass for those who have suffered Miscarriage, Infertility, or Neo-Natal Death Happy Birthday to our Fr. Donald who celebrates his 41st birthday on October 2, 2018! If you d like to wish him a Happy New Birthday Year personally: Many thanks to the members of the Holy Name Society for their generous donation of $9,678 to the Parish for repairs to the fire safety system which was necessary for Maggie s Place and for the Parish Office. The Gift came mostly from the proceeds of the Holy Name Society monthly drawing tickets. We thank the membership for all the help they continually give to St. Monica Church. Fr.
