Wade January 22, 1973 There are certain dates in American History which few can forget December 7, 1941; November 22, 1963; January 22, 1973, and September 11, 2001 all days of immense tragedy. This weekend we would like to remember January 22, This was the day that the United States Supreme Court ruled in its decision entitled Roe v. Wade, that unborn children have no right to life in America. Since that time, over 60,000, 000 children have been murdered in our country through a legal procedure called abortion. From those who espouse this practice, we are told that a child in the womb is not a human being. So it is the right of every woman to determine what she wants to do with this unborn child. Abortion is just a medical process to discard of this unwanted entity. Unfortunately, for the persons who listen to this garbage, they later find out that it was not just a medical procedure, but a horrible sin that can plague them for years to come. As Catholics, we all have three responsibilities to perform regarding this terrible anomaly: first, we have to promote a culture that respects the Gift of Life that God has given to us; second, we have to help women who have to face this terrible decision by providing a means so that they can save their unborn child; and third, we should let the men and women who have made this terrible choice know that forgiveness from God is possible and that God still cares about them. Please take time to pray for a greater respect for life in America, and for those who are participating in the March For Life during the month of January. Fr. 6 The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Annulments The covenant of marriage is a lifelong ad exclusive partnership of a man and a woman. Marriage is a holy vocation, a sacrament. Catholics believe that marriage vows cannot be dissolved by any civil power. When divorce occurs, the sacramental marriage bond remains in place unless it can be proven that valid marital consent was not exchanged. The Diocesan Tribunal, after a thorough examination of the facts of a marriage, may determine that consent was lacking or defective in an essential way. The Tribunal would then issue a Declaration of Invalidity (annulment) which permits the parties to marry anew in the Catholic Church.
