preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS August 2, 2009 The Bread of Life Fr. Lawrence Mick 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal Today s readings focus our attention on bread. Though manna was not really bread, it was a substitute for it and is described in the reading as bread from heaven. Today s psalm also reflects that linkage, with the refrain speaking of bread from heaven and the verses recalling the gift of manna. And Jesus takes up the same theme in the Gospel, identifying himself as the bread which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. For two millennia bread has been used to bear the presence of Christ in our midst. We might ask ourselves, though, if the bread we use is an adequate symbol to convey the richness of the mystery of that presence. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal addresses the type of bread we should use: The meaning of the sign demands that the material for the eucharistic celebration truly have the appearance of food. It is therefore expedient that the eucharistic bread, even though unleavened and baked in the traditional shape, be made in such a way that the priest at Mass with a congregation is able in practice to break it into parts for distribution to at least some of the faithful. Small hosts are, however, in no way ruled out when the number of those receiving holy Communion or other pastoral needs require it. The action of the fraction or breaking of bread, which gave its name to the Eucharist in apostolic times, will bring out more clearly the force and importance of the sign of unity of all in the one bread, and of the sign of charity by the fact that the one bread is distributed among the brothers and sisters (#321). Several points should be noted. The bread should look (and taste) like real food. The bread should be broken and shared with the assembly. Small hosts are a concession when there are large numbers sharing Communion. The symbolism of one bread shared among all is important theologically. The restrictions that require the bread to be unleavened and other Vatican instructions that exclude most ingredients make it difficult to create bread that looks and tastes like bread. As one wit put it, It takes more faith to believe that the holy Communion wafer is really bread than that it is truly the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Making real bread is not impossible, however. Here is a link to a recipe that is often used: EucharisticBread.pdf. Another option is www. holy-spiritchurch.org/ bread_makers.htm. If you can t do a breadbaking ministry, still use a large host that can be broken into many pieces and shared with some of the faithful. Don t let cost and efficiency outweigh the symbolism that once gave its name to the Mass: the breaking of the bread. Introduction God provides manna in the desert and the Israelites grumble about wretched food. Jesus offers his own body as our food and we grumble that the Mass is too long. We who have plenty to sustain life grumble about what we don t have. We re in good company, we grumblers. Maybe we could begin this day by having a good laugh at ourselves and counting our blessings. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you provide us with abundance: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, too often we long for what does not satisfy: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you feed us so that we may feed others: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Exod 16:2-4, God sends manna to the people in the desert. Eph 4:17, Put on your new self. John 6:24-35 The bread of God comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Prayers of the Faithful Presider My brothers and sisters, we remember in gratitude all that God has done for us, and because he asked us to, we pray for our needs and the needs of others. Minister For the world s impoverished we pray, For the church s ministry to the poor we pray, For the grace to be satisfied with enough we pray, For the energy to serve others we pray, For the courage to bear our suffering we pray, For the will to do what we know to be good we pray, For the humility to repent and make amends when we have done wrong we pray, For all that we need to lead holy and grace-filled lives we pray, For those who have died (names). And for those mourning the loss of a dear one we pray, Presider Gracious and life-giving God, hear the prayers of your people today. With all these things for which we pray, we ask for one thing more a grateful heart. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. August

preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS August 9, 2009 Sharing Christ s Sacrifice Fr. Lawrence Mick 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal Though the first reading and the Gospel offer clear links to the Eucharist, it may be today s second reading that provides the best topic for liturgical catechesis. Paul speaks of Christ handing himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God. Catholics have long spoken of the Mass as a sacrifice, but it is not clear how many of them understood the meaning of that truth. Too often, people thought of the Mass as a sacrifice in itself, somehow added to the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary. Yet the New Testament is quite clear that there is only one acceptable sacrifice in the new covenant, that of Christ himself. So, if the Mass is a sacrifice, it can only be so as a sharing in that one sacrifice of Christ. The main challenge for catechesis on this issue is teaching people how they are to share in that sacrifice. This is central to helping people to enter into the meaning of the Eucharist. In every Mass we proclaim the death and resurrection of the Lord. At the end of the eucharistic prayer, we sing Amen, indicating our willingness to embrace God s will as Jesus did, even if that leads to death (and thus to resurrection). This alignment of his will with God s will is the core of Jesus sacrifice. It was expressed historically in his death and resurrection, but his acceptance of the Father s will is the eternal dimension of his sacrifice. We share in his sacrifice if we align our wills with the Father s will in union with Jesus. We become part of his sacrificial act, as he eternally offers himself to the Father. Do you think your parishioners understand this process of offering the sacrifice of their lives in union with Christ? How well do planners and liturgical ministers understand what the Eucharist demands of us? How can you deepen understanding of this central dynamic of eucharistic spirituality? Is the topic addressed frequently in homilies? Can you find songs that express this call to share Christ s sacrifice? (See In the Cross of Christ by Marty Haugen as one example.) Can you create petitions that pray for the strength to follow God s will as faithfully as Jesus did? Can you create bulletin articles that address this issue? An Infamous Date: Today is the 64th anniversary of the dropping of the second atomic bomb, which resulted in the destruction of the city of Nagasaki. It would certainly be appropriate to include in the petitions a prayer for the people still living with the effects of that bombing and for peace in the world and an end to reliance on weapons of mass destruction. Introduction We are all in danger of taking for granted the extraordinary gift of the Eucharist. For the next hour or so, let us give all of our concerns to God. Let us ask God to quiet our minds and help us prepare to receive the food that nourishes the soul. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you are the Bread of Life: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are the Wine of Compassion: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you feed us so that we may feed others: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings 1 Kgs 19:4-8 Strengthened by that food, Elijah walked to the mountain of the Lord. Eph 4:30-5:2 Live in love as Christ loved us. John 6:41-51 Jesus is the living bread. PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Presider Let us bring our needs to God, who satisfies our hunger for all that is good. Minister For the hungry of the world: for those in famine lands where there is no food; for bread for those who hunger and for a hunger for justice for those who have bread we pray, Let us pray for the church: for those who hunger for the Eucharist; for those faithful members of our community who are not Catholic and who accompany their families to worship; for those who are anxiously waiting for the completion of the annulment process; for all those who long for Communion we pray, For those whose hunger has led them to addiction to alcohol, drugs, food, gambling, sex, work or material goods. For all who are struggling with habits of sin we pray, For students returning to their college or university and for those who are leaving home for the first time: for opportunities to seek after wisdom and for the safety and well-being of all young people we pray, For farmers and gardeners, who depend on beneficial weather for their crops we pray, We remember those whose lives are affected by the summer heat; for all the sick and those who care for them we pray, We remember those who have died (names). For them and for all who mourn their passing we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, hear the prayers of your people this day. Satisfy the longing of our hearts, be the object of our desire and bless us with the knowledge of your lasting love for us. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. 20 August 2009

preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS August 16, 2009 Sharing the Cup Today s readings suggest focusing our eucharistic catechesis on sharing the blood of Christ. Wisdom calls us: Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have mixed! Jesus insists in the Gospel that his flesh is true food and his blood is true drink. He also warns that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Though Paul warns us not to get drunk on wine, it is clear that Jesus intended us all to share both bread and cup, body and blood. If all those who come to Communion in your parish share the cup as well as the bread, then you have obviously done a good job of catechesis in the past. If, however, there are many who pass by the cup, you have work to do. Of course, even if all receive under both species, there is still value in deepening people s understanding of the meaning of these two central symbols and inviting them to embrace more fully the commitments that flow from sharing in this sacred meal. Many people still have unreasonable concerns about getting sick from sharing a common cup. It may be helpful to remind them that the Centers for Disease Control and the American Medical Association have both stated officially they know of no serious disease outbreaks linked to sharing a Communion cup. Wiping and Fr. Lawrence Mick turning the cup after each person drinks will make contamination even less likely. Recent swine flu alerts duly noted, things like colds and flu are more likely to be spread by simply standing next to a sick person who is coughing and sneezing. The common cup is not a significant risk. Beyond such hygiene concerns, however, it is important to teach people the rich symbolism of sharing the cup of sacrifice. It is a sign of the covenant, as Jesus own words at the Last Supper indicate. Earlier he had asked the disciples if they could drink the cup he would drink. In the garden, he prays that the cup will pass him by. Sharing the cup expresses our willingness to share in his sacrifice. There is a reason Jesus said, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. Solemnity of the Assumption: This is one of those years when the holy day falls on Saturday, so the obligation to attend Mass does not apply. As always, though, it is still a solemnity and should be celebrated with at least one fully prepared Mass. Besides a Mass on Saturday morning, you might discuss whether enough people would gather on Friday evening to honor Mary. Check with local groups with a special devotion to the Mother of God to see if they would like to encourage such a celebration. 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal Introduction Today s readings continue to call us to be mindful of that great gift: the Eucharist. It is food for the soul; food that sustains us on the journey; food we share with our true family our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us rejoice to be called to this banquet and pray for those who long for holy Communion. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you are our food for the journey: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are the food that unites us: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you feed us so that we may feed others: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Prov 9:1-6 To the one who lacks understanding, come, eat my food. Eph 5:15-20 Watch carefully how you live. John 6:51-58 Jesus is the living bread. Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, let us bring all of our hungers to the Lord, confident that God is the satisfaction of every desire. Minister We pray for those throughout the world who do not have enough to eat: for those who will die today for lack of food, clean water, simple medicines we pray, We pray for those who have too much to eat: for those struggling with their weight; for a way to share the bounty we pray, We pray for the church: for those who gather every week to pray together; for those who no longer participate in the Mass; for families, communities and nations divided by religious differences we pray, For students going back to school: for those who learn easily and those who struggle with their lessons; for teachers and catechists and all those who form the young we pray, For beneficial rains for our gardens and fields; and for all who suffer in hot weather we pray, For the sick: for those who are living with serious illness or who are in constant pain; for those who feel isolated in their illness; for those who cannot afford adequate health care we pray, We remember those who have died (names). For them and for all who mourn the loss of someone they love we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, increase our faith in your care for us and your power to provide what we need. Answer our prayers and bring each one of us and all our concerns to the fulfillment your love intends. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. August

preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS August 23, 2009 Liturgy Has Consequences This is the last week of our detour into John s Gospel. Next week we return to Mark. Though eucharistic catechesis is not restricted to these five weeks, of course, this Sunday might be seen as a conclusion to this intensive focus on such catechesis. As we have noted, there is need for continuing formation on various elements of the celebration of the sacrament itself. Yet if our catechesis ends there, we have missed the boat. Sharing in the Eucharist has consequences for everyday living. Connecting our worship with our daily lives is a continuing challenge for every Christian, lest our worship become empty ritual, devoid of any real meaning or significance. The Gospel today highlights the difficulty many people had, and still have, in accepting what Jesus teaches. Here the emphasis seems to be on his insistence that he is the bread of life and that his followers are to eat his flesh and drink his blood. There is no doubt that this is a difficult truth of faith for many to accept, and certainly it is a matter of concern when even many Catholics seem to have misunderstood or rejected our traditional belief in the actual transformation of the bread and wine into Christ s body and blood. However, much more is required of those who share the sacred meal than just assent to a doctrinal truth. People can be very firm in Fr. Lawrence Mick their belief that the bread and wine truly change but still miss the meaning and the implications of eating and drinking Christ s body and blood. Sharing the meal is a renewal of the covenant, which means echoing the words of Joshua, As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. That service of God means service of God s people, as Communion binds us intimately with all the members of Christ s body. Perhaps we should all be haunted by the words of Pope John Paul II in his 2004 letter for the Year of the Eucharist, Mane Nobiscum: We cannot delude ourselves; by our mutual love and, in particular, by our concern for those in need we will be recognized as true followers of Christ. This will be the criterion by which the authenticity of our eucharistic celebrations is judged (#28). How authentic are the eucharistic celebrations in your parish? What might help your parishioners to recognize more fully the implications of sharing in this holy meal? How often, for example, does your final song make reference to efforts to foster justice, peace and care for the poor? Second Reading: Today s second reading from the Letter to the Ephesians is problematic for many hearers. To avoid misunderstanding, a shorter form is provided. Unless the preacher intends to address the reading in the homily, use the short form today. 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal Introduction In the first reading, Joshua calls on all the people to decide today whom they will serve. Jesus asks his disciples if they want to leave him, and Peter says for all of us, Lord, to whom shall we go? Let us pray today for the grace to choose Christ. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you are the Way the path to the kingdom: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are the Truth all that we need to live a holy life: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the Life the Way of Truth that conquers death: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Josh 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Eph 5:21-32 The mystery of marriage as sign of Christ and the church John 6:60-69 Lord, to whom shall we go? Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, one of the duties of the faithful disciple is to pray for the world. Let us remember all those who most need our prayers. Minister We pray for those whose lives are endangered: for those who live in the path of war; those who live where there is no food or clean water; those with no access to medical care; those who lack the most vital necessities we pray, We pray for the church: for all bishops and pastors; for deacons and all ministers to the poor; for ministers of worship and those who care for the sick...we pray, We pray for those who have lost their homes or their loved ones to natural disaster; for compassionate care for all who have suffered such terrible loss we pray, We pray for a good end to summer: for gratitude for the blessings of summer summer food and summer activities and time to be with family and friends we pray, We pray for those who are sick: for those who struggle with learning disabilities, emotional illnesses and addiction; for all who are trying to lose weight, exercise and eat responsibly we pray, We remember those who have died (names). For all those for whom we grieve, and for those who mourn the loss of a dear one we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, hear the prayers of your people this day. May we learn from the examples of the saints and wise ones who chose to seek you above all things. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 22 August 2009

preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS August 30, 2009 Clinging to Human Tradition Today s Gospel raises a critical and difficult issue for anyone concerned about worship. Liturgy, as ritual behavior, is always traditional. Ritual is patterned behavior that people can enact comfortably because it is familiar. Ritual patterns enable us to enter more deeply into the meaning of the ritual because we don t have to devote much mental energy to figuring out what to do next. At the same time, this traditional nature of liturgy commonly gives rise to the issue Jesus addressed in the Gospel. The ritual, and the comfort it brings, can become more important than the message the ritual is meant to express and convey. You disregard God s commandment but cling to human tradition, Jesus complains to the scribes and Pharisees. The problem of overattachment to human traditions is revealed clearly when the church embarks on its periodic efforts to renew its liturgical celebrations. It would be impossible (and depressing) to tally the number of times that parishioners have complained over the past 45 years of liturgical renewal that we ve never done it that way before. The attachment to traditional ways of acting or speaking in worship often reveals an attachment to personal comfort and an unwillingness to be stretched spiritually. Think of just a few examples. Some people resist the Fr. Lawrence Mick sign of peace because they do not want to interact with other worshipers; it is easier to engage only in a private relationship with God. Some refuse to sing the Communion song because they want to pray privately right after they receive; they reject the real meaning of Communion in favor of a privatized approach that has been condemned in the church from the time of St. Paul to the time of John Paul II. Those who refuse to sing at all at worship because they don t like singing reject their responsibility for contributing to the full praise that God is due. Parish leaders have to walk a tightrope, of course. Worship patterns are not changed easily or quickly. Much patience and catechesis are needed over a period of time. And there is seldom a complete response from any assembly; some people will always resist, despite our best efforts. At the same time, allowing improper behavior to continue indefinitely is an abdication of leadership. Parish leaders have a serious responsibility to ensure that the liturgy of the church expresses the faith of the church. To allow an assembly, for example, to persist in behavior at Communion that contradicts the unifying dynamic of Communion is to allow the fundamental meaning of the sacrament to be distorted. This is not just a matter of custom; it is a matter of faith and witness. 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal Introduction Today we hear three challenges in our scriptures. Moses instructs the Israelites to keep the law and make of themselves a great nation. James charges us to be doers of the word and not hearers only. And Jesus rebukes those for whom human tradition is more important than God s commandment to love one another. It is a lot to hear in one day, so let us quiet our minds and open our hearts to receive God s word. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you are the Word who challenges us: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are the prophet who speaks to us today: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you open our hearts to hear your call and heed your Word: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Deut 4:1-2, 6-8 The law of Moses is given to Israel. James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 Be doers of the word. Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, Jesus challenges hypocrisy. Prayers of the Faithful Presider God created us to live in harmony,to care for each other and to pray for each other. Confident that God hears our prayers, let us pray. Minister We pray for the church: for the courage to be different, to speak for those who have no voice, to stand up for those who are beaten down, to witness to a better way the way of Christian discipleship we pray, We pray for the leaders of nations: for those countries ravaged by war, famine and poverty; for the creation of human communities where people live in peace we pray, We pray for this parish community with its many blessings: for an end to all that divides us; for hearts open to the stranger; for a peaceful end of summer and beginning of the school year we pray, We pray for those most in need: for the very poor; for those who are living with depression; for those who are anxious about their future we pray, We pray for those who have died (names). For those who die alone with no one to mourn their passing and for those who are grieving the loss of someone dear to them we pray, Presider Generous and loving God, you sent us Jesus to teach us about you and to show us that you love us, that you care about us, that you continue to provide for us every day. Help us to trust in your unfailing love and live generously without fear. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. August

August 2009 DAILY BREAD degrees to declare Jesus Son of God and King of Israel. Jesus knows our frailty, but he knows our goodness, too. Let us hear his call as he affirms our capacity to grow in virtue. For ongoing conversion in Christ, we pray. ecw Tues., Aug. 25: 1 Thess 2:1-8; Matt 23:23-26 Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean. The Pharisees showy scrupulosity magnifies their hypocrisy. They observe the smallest details of the law but disregard its essence. We imagine their righteous indignation. As much as anyone, they have been fooled by their own charade. Are we under a similarly grand delusion? Does dressing the part and keeping up the appearance of a faithful disciple showing up for Mass, putting our envelope into the collection basket, serving the community convince us that we are indeed faithful, when perhaps we fail to attend as we might to aspects of faith that no one sees? Have we made personal prayer a daily discipline? Does it include a regular examination of conscience? For a deepening relationship with the Lord, we pray. ecw Wed., Aug. 26: 1 Thess 2:9-13; Matt 23:27-32 You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside. One day many years ago I insisted that my daughter give her much-neglected room a thorough cleaning. When I went to check on her progress, I found her having a great time kicking around a long-forgotten hacky sack. I told her, See, when you clean, you find things! It became an oftrepeated maxim in our house. Indeed, it seemed a consistent truth: Whenever we deep-cleaned, some forgotten treasure would surface from within the mess. Jesus insists upon more than a surface cleaning of our souls. As we look deep into our hearts to rout out bad habits and attitudes, we can be sure of finding also the virtue we need to grow in holiness. For hope in the Lord s mercy, we pray. ecw Thurs., Aug. 27: 1 Thess 3:7-13; Matt 24:42-51 Amen, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. Some people have figured it out: By taking a minimalist approach to responsibilities, they keep expectations (and the workload) low, and that is how they like it. They don t want the reward of a job done well more work and greater responsibility. Yet, when we do the Lord s bidding, the work to which we are called is not drudgery. It is joy, ministry, our way of standing in solidarity with the Lord. Service to others energizes us and becomes the means by which we find meaning and purpose in life. May our memory of St. Monica, whose persistent devotion helped bring her son Augustine to Christ, make us ever ready to serve the Lord. For faithfulness and prudence, we pray. ecw Fri., Aug. 28: 1 Thess 4:1-8; Matt 25:1-13 St. Augustine, bishop and doctor But the wise ones replied, No, for there may not be enough for us and you. The story of the five wise virgins being prepared enough to carry extra oil demonstrates their wisdom. But we should also note their keenness in setting healthy boundaries with the foolish virgins. Do we know where to draw the line in giving to others? Is our giving always healthy? Or perhaps do we give too much, in ways that enable others to shirk their responsibilities? The emergency instruction of flight attendants is to secure our own oxygen mask before trying to help others with theirs. It is a lesson we can carry into everyday life. Self-care is not selfishness. Rather, it empowers us to give our best to others. For healthy boundaries, we pray. ecw Sat., Aug. 29: 1 Thess 4:9-11; Mark 6:17-29 Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. The dreadful demise of John the Baptist comes at the hands of a pathetic character, King Herod, a spineless, pompous fool who allows his scheming wife and stepdaughter to get the upper hand with him. Hopefully, we are not so lacking in moral fiber. Yet we might do well to notice how we are like Herod; we, too, know what it is like to sense truth without grasping it fully. As we tackle the complex moral issues of our day, let us use all the gifts we were given to discern God s will our hearts and our minds, wise counsel and dialogue within the community of believers. For holy discernment, we pray. ecw Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time Mon., Aug. 31: 1 Thess 4:13-18; Luke 4:16-30 He said to them, Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. We who have received the Spirit of Jesus share in the mission of the Anointed One. Today (and every day) is an opportunity to take part in the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecy. But where do we find the poor, the captives, the blind, the oppressed? Certainly our world is populated with many who literally fit these categories. Faith can open our eyes also to many whose poverty, captivity, blindness or oppression are more figurative but nonetheless just as real those who suffer from poor health, loneliness, depression, addiction or simple confusion about how to live well. The needy surround us. Let us offer the healing touch of Jesus to someone in some way every day. For the healing Spirit of Jesus, we pray. ecw Daily Bread Authors Patricia Russell graduated from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich., with degrees in English and secondary education.
