preparation: planning & prayers June 2, 2013 The Body and Blood of Christ Fr. Lawrence Mick Corpus Christi Paige Byrne Shortal The Lectionary selections for today s solemnity are found at #169. The texts in the missal are found right after last Sunday s texts, at the end of the Sundays of Ordinary Time. The missal includes one of the two possible prefaces with the other proper texts, but you may use either of the two prefaces of the Eucharist found at #60 and #61 among the other prefaces. The one included with the proper texts is probably the better choice, however, since it emphasizes the unifying effects of the Eucharist. The text would be improved by a couple of minor emendations: Drop the For at the beginning of the second paragraph, reverse the last two words of the secondlast paragraph so it reads foreshadowed here, and change the final sentence to read and we cry out, with all the host of Angels, and without end we acclaim. The opening collect would also benefit from some readjustments. The first part would flow better if it read who left us a memorial of your Passion in this wonderful Sacrament. The next part would be clearer if it read grant us a deeper reverence for the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood so that we may always experience etc. The sequence today is optional, and there is both a long and short form of it in the Lectionary. Sequences are meant to be sung. If you can t find a good setting that the assembly can sing, it is best omitted. By Flowing Waters (Liturgical Press) has a setting of the short form. The songs Laud, O Zion (Journeysongs) and Praise, O Zion, Voices Raising (We Celebrate and People s Mass Book) could be used in full or shortened as substitutes. The sequence ends with a reference to the heavenly feast, and both the preface and the prayer after Communion speak of the Eucharist foreshadowing heavenly realities. That might suggest some preaching or catechesis in the bulletin on the eschatological nature of the Eucharist. The Eucharist strengthens us for our present life, but it also calls us forward to the future kingdom. In a sense, we practice living in the kingdom during every Eucharist so that we might live a bit more fully in God s kingdom during the week. And we anticipate the full joy of the heavenly banquet as we celebrate the eucharistic banquet each week. Of course, this only makes sense if the actual celebration of the Eucharist is experienced as a foretaste of heaven. Planners might take this occasion as an opportunity to evaluate how well the whole liturgy is celebrated, not only today but every Sunday. We always have room for improvement. Introduction Today is the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. In the Gospel we will hear the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 with just a little bread and fish. Our Lord has demonstrated the abundance that is available to us, has even made his body and blood our spiritual food. So why do we act as if there is not enough? Let us pray today for trust in our God of abundance. Penitential Act Lord Jesus, you are the bread of life: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are our food for the journey: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you feed us so that we may feed others: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Gen 14:18-20 Melchizedek brings bread and wine. Ps 110:1-4 You are a priest forever. 1 Cor 11:23-26 St. Paul gives us the words we use at the consecration. Luke 9:11b-17 Jesus feeds the 5,000. Prayers of the Faithful Presider As Christians everywhere have always done, let us bring our needs to God this day, confident that our deepest hungers will be satisfied. Minister Let us pray for Christians all over the world, that we may live the faith we profess and be for others the face, hands and voice of Christ on this earth we pray, For people everywhere who suffer without access to nourishing food, clean water and effective medicines; and for those who live with too much and long for a more meaningful life of sharing God s bounty with others we pray, Let us pray for those who cannot pray: for those who are distracted or restless or living in the darkness of despair we pray, Let us pray for those who suffer: for those who live with chronic pain, those who are lonely, those who are in harm s way. For those we love and those for whom we are concerned we pray, For good summer: for warm sun and gentle rain for our fields and gardens; for times of rest and renewal with family and friends; for safety for travelers and for all young people we pray, For those who have died (names). And for those who are grieving the passing of a loved one we pray. Presider God of abundance, you give us this beautiful world, loving companions, all that we need to be happy and holy men and women. Give us the grace to open our hearts and minds to receive your abundant love. We pray always in Jesus name. Amen. June

preparation: planning & prayers June 9, 2013 Raising the Dead Fr. Lawrence Mick 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal Though we have been in Ordinary Time for the past two weeks, this Sunday we finally return to green vestments and Ordinary Time texts. This is the Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time. Most of the texts today are not difficult, but the opening collect is rather awkward. It would flow much better if it read discern what is right at your prompting and do it by your guidance. The first reading and the Gospel today both recount miraculous events that raise a dead person back to life. Elijah raises the dead son of the widow of Zarephath and Jesus raises the dead son of the widow of Nain. These wondrous deeds are not only signs of power but also signs of compassion. In an age with no Social Security or welfare programs, a woman who had lost her husband was totally dependent on her son for survival. Losing the son as well left her totally bereft. These miracles express God s compassion for those in need. Planners should remember that when they are composing the petitions for today s Mass and when choosing music. God s life-giving power comes through God s word, as the widow points out in the first reading: The word of the Lord comes truly from your mouth. This is also reflected in the second reading in Paul s insistence that the Gospel is not of human origin. The word of God transformed Paul from persecutor to apostle, 20 June 2013 from an agent of death to a proclaimer of life. We might ask ourselves this week if the words and rituals of our liturgies bring people to life. Are they life-giving? Are they lively? Or are they boring and dead? To answer those questions honestly, we might need to ask some members of the assembly for their evaluations. In doing so, it is important to seek out a range of people different age groups, ethnicities, levels of church involvement, etc. How do teens experience our liturgies? How are children involved in our worship? How fully do minority groups in the assembly feel included and involved? How do women and girls see their presence and roles valued? How fully are men and boys active? Among all the groups, however, the deeper questions need to be asked. Does the liturgy motivate them to live the Gospel more fully? Does it invite them into a personal encounter with the living God? Does it bring them into deeper communion with one another? Worship that is lively and life-giving is not necessarily loud or flashy. What is important is that the symbols and rituals we use in the liturgy are done well, that the music is appropriate and spiritually deep, that the word is proclaimed with power, that the preaching is challenging and that significant silence is observed richly. Introduction Today we hear of the tenderness of our God. In the Gospel, a widow s only son is healed. In biblical times, a widow s only retirement insurance was her children. In our prayer today, let us entrust to God those who are needy, and ask God how we can be an instrument of healing in this world. Penitential Act Lord Jesus, your Word is comfort to the suffering: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, your Word is wisdom to the seeker: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, your Word is salvation for all: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings 1 Kings 17:17-24 Elijah heals a widow s only son. Ps 30:2, 3-6, I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. Gal 1:11-19 God revealed his son to Paul so that he might proclaim him to the gentiles. Luke 7:11-17 Jesus heals a widow s only son. Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, let us pray for our needs and the needs of the world to our God who knows us and loves us. Minister For the church: for Christian women and men who live out the Gospel in their daily lives and, by so doing, witness to a loving, healing, caring God we pray, For our nation. Let us pray especially for our nation s health care system: for an outcome that is just, that protects the poor and unemployed, that allows access to adequate medical care for all we pray, Today let us pray for women of the world, particularly women who are abused, treated unjustly, made invisible or silent by prejudice and disregard we pray, For the very sick: for those in hospitals and nursing homes; and for doctors, nurses, therapists, home health aides and all who care for those who are suffering we pray, For those who are mourning the loss of someone dear to them a parent, a spouse, a child, a sister or brother or close friend. For all who find themselves in the throes of grief we pray, For those who have died (names). For all who have gone before us we pray, Presider Creator God, loving and merciful, hear our prayers this day and give us what we need to become the holy men and women you call us to be. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.

preparation: planning & prayers June 16, 2013 Radical Forgiveness Fr. Lawrence Mick 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal This is the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, but the readings could fit well in the season of Lent. Our first reading recalls David s repentance when he was confronted with his sinfulness by the prophet Nathan. The responsorial psalm prays for forgiveness. In the Gospel Jesus forgives the sins of the woman who anoints his feet. What we might easily miss about these two stories of forgiveness is how radical they are. Neither David nor the woman earns God s forgiveness. All David does is admit his guilt; the woman doesn t even do that in words, though perhaps her actions may be seen as expressing repentance. God forgives as a free gift of grace. So Paul insists in the second reading that salvation is a result of grace, not of obedience to the law. This is the fundamental truth that should form our understanding of the sacrament of penance or reconciliation. The Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization last fall issued 58 propositions, one of which called for putting this sacrament at the center of the church s pastoral life. It called for at least one place in each diocese where the sacrament is available on an almost continuous basis and for each parish to have a designated time for hearing confessions. Though the proposition speaks of the communal dimensions of reconciliation, it makes no mention of encouraging communal celebrations of the sacrament. The new Rite of Penance issued after the Second Vatican Council offered one rite for individual reconciliation and two rites for communal reconciliation. Though Rome subsequently restricted the use of general absolution, the inclusion of two communal forms indicates the importance of the communal dimension of reconciliation. It would be a major step backward if we abandoned communal penance services in favor of routine individual confessions. And yet, most parishes only celebrate the sacrament communally during Advent and Lent. That leaves a large gap of time when there is no opportunity to celebrate the sacrament with other members of the parish. The readings this Sunday make this an ideal time to schedule a communal penance service for the summer. But will people come? Probably not in the numbers that we see during Lent, but that s no reason not to offer the opportunity. You may only need one or two priests but it gives people a chance to celebrate God s mercy together. And that should be the central theme of any invitation to take part not an appeal to guilt but an offer to celebrate God s love and mercy. Parishes might consider offering such a service once a month, perhaps at the same time that individual confessions are offered in the other weeks of the month. Introduction In today s readings, a sinful king acknowledges his sin and is forgiven. A sinful woman washes the feet of Jesus and he both defends and forgives her. On this Fathers Day we remember our fathers with love and forgive them for their shortcomings. Today we recall that we are all sinners and that we are all loved. Penitential Act Lord Jesus, you came to call sinners: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you came to show us the way to forgiveness: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you came to reveal God s love: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings 2 Sam 12:7-10, 13 David confesses and is forgiven. Ps 32:1-2, 5, 7, 11 Lord, forgive the wrong I have done. Gal 2:16, I live no longer, but Christ lives in me. Luke 7:36-8:3 Jesus forgives the sinful woman. Prayers of the Faithful Presider We ask our loving, forgiving God for what we need and for the needs of our world. Minister For Christians: that the world may know us by our love and by our openness to forgiveness when we fail to love we pray, For the nations: for nonviolent, non-harmful, nonwasteful ways to resolve conflicts we pray, For those who are difficult to forgive: for those who have abused children; for those who are convicted of murder; for those who have stolen from innocent people; for those whose sins have become public and who are targets of condemnation we pray, For those who have hurt us and whom we have hurt we pray, On this Father s Day, let us pray for our fathers and stepfathers, godfathers and grandfathers. For all men who serve young people as teachers and pastors, coaches and counselors: for strength and tenderness, courage and wisdom... we pray, Let us also remember those who miss their fathers today: for those whose fathers have died; for those who never knew their fathers; for those whose relationship with their fathers is strained or unhappy. For comfort for the fatherless we pray, We remember all who have died (names). For those mourning the loss of their fathers and for fathers mourning the loss of a child we pray, Presider Gracious and forgiving God, hear the prayers of your people this day. Help us to know that you provide and care for us just as a loving father provides and cares for his children. We pray always in Jesus name. Amen. June

preparation: planning & prayers June 23, 2013 Embracing the Cross Fr. Lawrence Mick 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal The prayer over the offerings today could benefit from some adjustment. The word reconciliation is clearer than conciliation, and offer is clearer than make offering of. The readings today focus our attention on the cross of Christ. Zechariah speaks of looking on the one whom they have pierced, and in the Gospel, Jesus predicts his passion and calls us to take up the cross and follow him. The second reading does not mention the cross but it speaks of the effects of baptism, in which we die with Christ. These texts might prompt us to reflect on the sacrificial aspect of the Eucharist. Since the Second Vatican Council, we have rightly emphasized the nature of the Eucharist as a meal. That aspect of the liturgy was largely ignored before the council, so it needed a lot of attention. But the meal is a sacrificial meal; both aspects of the Eucharist are important and need to be kept in balance. Seeing the meal as sacrificial is the key to understanding the demands that the celebration makes on us. When we sing Amen at the end of the eucharistic prayer, we commit ourselves to sharing in Christ s sacrifice, to loving as he loved, to giving of ourselves for the sake of others as he did. This would be a good week for some mystagogical catechesis on phrases from the eucharistic prayers themselves. This could be 22 June 2013 done both in the preaching and in the bulletin or even in a separate insert with the bulletin today. Consider some of the following texts as the basis for this catechesis: Fulfilling your will and gaining for you a holy people, he stretched out his hands as he endured his Passion, so as to break the bonds of death and manifest the resurrection. (Eucharistic Prayer 2, Preface) We offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ. (Eucharistic Prayer 3) Look, O Lord, upon the Sacrifice which you yourself have provided for your Church, and grant in your loving kindness to all who partake of this one Bread and one Chalice that, gathered into one body by the Holy Spirit, they may truly become a living sacrifice in Christ to the praise of your glory. (Eucharistic Prayer 4) The goal of this kind of catechesis is to invite the assembly to enter more fully into the meaning of the Eucharist, to share more fully in the sacrifice of Christ, and thus to embrace a life of sacrificial love and service. Introduction My friends, today s Gospel is one we associate with Lent, not a Sunday in June, but the message is true in all seasons: to be a follower of Jesus we must willingly accept the cross. Everyone suffers. Everyone struggles with a cross. We Christians unite our sufferings to the cross of Jesus and recognize that we do not bear our burdens alone; that we are called to community, to help each other, to be Christ for each other. Penitential Act Lord Jesus, you were born into this world to show us how to live: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you died on the cross so that we may know death without despair: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you rose to new life that we may rise and live with you forever: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Zech 12:10-11 They shall mourn the one they killed. Ps 63: 2-6, 8-9 My soul is thirsting for you, O God. Gal 3:26-29 Through faith we are children of God. Luke 9:18-24 You must take up your cross. Prayers of the Faithful Presider As Christians we are called to share each other s burdens. One way we do that is to remember in prayer those for whom we are concerned. Let us pray. Minister For Christians everywhere: for those who comfort the suffering, counsel the despairing, console the grieving and speak for the voiceless we pray, For victims of unjust circumstances: for those in the path of war; for those who live with violence; for those who lost their jobs through no fault of their own we pray, For those whose suffering we forget: for the hungry; for sick people without medical care; for refugees and for victims of natural disasters we pray, For those who live with debilitating problems: alcoholism, drug addiction, depression, anxiety and other conditions that make day-to-day life difficult; for all who are lonely, afraid or in pain we pray, For children whose suffering goes unnoticed: for children without adequate schools, inspired teachers or someone who finds them special we pray, For those who are dying and those who are afraid to die we pray, For those who have died (names). For all who are grieving the lost of a loved one we pray, Presider Loving and merciful God, you know our pain and the pain of the world. Hear our prayers for all who suffer and grant us the grace to offer our suffering as prayer for those who are most in need. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.

preparation: planning & prayers June 30, 2013 Cherishing Freedom Fr. Lawrence Mick 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal This Thursday the United States celebrates Independence Day. For suggestions on celebrating that day liturgically, see this column for July 1, 2012 in your files or the online archive. The readings this Sunday also focus our attention on freedom. Elisha manifests a radical freedom from possessions when he hosts a massive barbeque with his team of 12 oxen roasted on his plowing equipment. The psalm invites us to a similar freedom that sees our inheritance in our relationship with God. St. Paul urges us not to take on the yoke of slavery a second time but to live in the freedom of the Spirit of God. In the Gospel, Jesus challenges us to detach from all worldly possessions if we are to follow him. Freedom is a funny thing. We want it, we demand it, we fight for it. But when we get it, we often find it hard to maintain. All too often we do what Paul cautions against we take on the yoke of slavery again. We allow ourselves to be enslaved by a variety of things. Many are enslaved by addictions to drugs or alcohol or nicotine. Others are enslaved to their possessions, which really possess them so that they are not free. Others allow themselves to be enslaved by ideologies, adhering to a strict party line that admits of no freedom of thought or discussion. Others look for an authority outside themselves to provide security, whether that authority is a literal reading of the Bible or a slavish obedience to the Vatican. Often these various enslavements lead to the kinds of behavior St. Paul mentions today. People end up biting and devouring one another. As Paul reminds us, the freedom Christ won for us is to be used to serve one another through love. There are many in the church today who want to squash the freedom that the Second Vatican Council gave us, especially in the area of worship. Many in authority demand absolute obedience, and some in our assemblies are eager to enforce such a regime by reporting any deviations to the bishop or directly to Rome. This is clearly an unhealthy abuse of authority and a slavery that rejects the freedom of the Spirit. In opposing such abuse, however, we need to be careful not to fall into similar tactics of condemnation and attack. Our freedom must be maintained but it must always be used for serving others in love. Planners and presiders might pray together this week for the courage to insist on the freedom that the Spirit intends so that we can serve our people well and creatively. We might also pray for a love strong enough to love even those who want to enslave us for their own purposes. Introduction Today s readings are about God s call and our response. God calls some to choose and others to be faithful to the choices they have already made. Are we willing? Still eager? Always learning? Grateful? Faithful? Let us pray for the grace to renew our minds and hearts to obey God s call. Penitential Act Lord Jesus, you call us to follow you: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you call us to wholehearted discipleship: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you call us to new life: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings 1 Kings 19:16b, Elisha follows Elijah. Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-11 Keep me safe, O God. Gal 5:1, We were called for freedom. Luke 9:51-62 Follow Jesus and do not look back. Prayers of the Faithful Presider We pray for those who have answered the call to serve, and by so doing, to follow Christ. Minister For those who answer the call to preach the word: for pastors, deacons and catechists; for missionaries and those who form children; for all who preach and teach by example we pray, For those who answer the call to civil service: for leaders of nations, states and cities; for those who make our laws and those who enforce them; for police officers, firefighters and emergency responders; for those who serve in the military and the peace corps, and all who serve the needy internationally we pray, For those who answer the call to work for justice: for those who provide food to the hungry, consolation to prisoners, a voice for those who are not heard we pray, For those who answer the call to marriage: for couples just starting out and those who have been married a long time; for those who are raising children and those who create hospitable homes to make others welcome we pray, For those who answer the call to heal: for doctors and nurses and therapists; for counselors and confessors; for those who simply abide with people who are suffering we pray, We remember those who have been called from this life (names). And for all who mourn and those who comfort them we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, you call us to be your disciples. Help us to hear your voice and answer your call with the best we have to offer. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. June
