preparation: HOMIly & PRAYERS April 1, 2010 My Life in Your Hands Fr. James Smith We like to know what is on the minds of our friends, especially during important events. During the Last Supper, I imagine Jesus to be thinking something like this: My friends have no idea that this is our last time together. They think it s just one of many wonderful meals we have shared. I ll let them enjoy themselves while I try to capture each person in a clear image I can store in my memory. There is boisterous Peter, holding forth as always. He may not know quite what I was trying to accomplish, but that never kept him from forging ahead. He boasted that he would never deny me but he will, as most people do some time or other. The saving grace of Peter is that he sins with passion and repents absolutely. There s his brother Andrew, who will be forever known as the brother of Peter. His value is that he kept Peter in check. I called Nathaniel a man without guile. That was a nice way of saying that he was naive. No matter what outlandish thing I say, he absorbs it without question. The rest of them kid him about being gullible. But secretly, they measure their faith against his trusting nature. I saved Matthew from the dubious job of robbing the Jews to pay the Romans. His occupation was so despicable that he will never escape the name of Matthew the tax collector. But he is a practical enough businessman to pay the price of entrance into the kingdom. James and John are squabbling again. Thunder and Lightning. They are ambitious, constantly competing with the others. They even fight over which one will be on my right or my left in the kingdom that they imagine will be powerful and worldly and rewarding. We don t know whether Thomas is uncertain, skeptical or undecided, but he can be anything he likes as far as I m concerned. Because when I said I was going to Jerusalem to be killed, he is the one who immediately cried, Let s go with him. The other James is a third cousin of mine, the only relative who took me seriously. Philip tried to get the connection between me and God, but could never quite see the Father in me. Simon was a Zealot, and this name explains why he was disappointed in my pacifist leanings. Last but not least is Judas. I almost feel guilty about him because I failed him. He thought he knew what I should do more than I did. I didn t know either, but I trusted my Father. It will be that lack of trust, not silver, that will transform my friend into a reluctant traitor. But I forgive him beforehand. It s time to go. Like everyone else, I wonder if I have worked hard enough, loved deeply enough. Have I accomplished all that I could have? God alone can know. So, Father, into your hands I commend my life. Holy Thursday Paige Byrne Shortal Introduction My friends, this is the night we remember that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and told them and us to do the same for each other. This is the night Jesus broke bread and shared the cup and gave us the Eucharist. We gather to remember that we are all called to be servants, to nourish ourselves for this work with the holy sacrament of Christ s body and blood, and in so doing to be the body of Christ. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you are our example and our guide: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are our food and drink for the journey: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the servant who leads us to eternal life: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Exod 12:1-8, The Passover of the Lord 1 Cor 11:23-26 Do this in memory of me. John 13:1-15 As I have done for you, you should also do. PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFul Presider My friends, at his last supper, Jesus gave us a mandate for how we are to live as his disciples. On this night when we remember the example Jesus gave to us, let us pray, Lord, let us be like you. Minister When we long to be important, we pray Lord, let us be like you. When we are anxious, depressed or tempted to despair, we pray Lord, let us be like you. When we are tired and feel used or ignored, we pray Lord, let us be like you. When we find it hard to serve, we recall you washing our feet and we pray Lord, let us be like you. When we find it hard to love, we pray Lord, let us be like you. When we feel alone; when we are grieving the loss of a loved one, we pray Lord, let us be like you. When our cross is too heavy, when we cannot go another step, we pray Lord, let us be like you. When we forget you and all that we know to be good, still we pray Lord, let us be like you. Presider Lord Jesus, on this holy night we remember that you came not as a person of power and majesty, but in the weakness of one like us. Inspire us, encourage us and strengthen us as we live our lives faithful to your example, that we might come to be with you in heaven, where you are Lord forever and ever. Amen. 22 April 2010

preparation: PlANNING & PRAYERS April 4, 2010 An Exultant Exsultet Fr. Lawrence Mick Easter Sunday Paige Byrne Shortal The Easter Proclamation (Exsultet in Latin) is the climactic high point of the Service of Light that begins the Easter Vigil. It should be an opportunity for the whole assembly to be lifted up into the joy of the resurrection, a time for all to share in the wonder of this holy night. For this to happen, however, the Exsultet needs to be proclaimed well and the assembly needs to know how to add their (admittedly small) part in the proclamation. The importance of excellence in the proclamation is suggested by the options given in the Sacramentary for who may sing the Exsultet. The first choice would be the deacon, who is also the proper minister to carry the paschal candle from the fire to its place near the ambo or in the middle of the sanctuary. This assumes, of course, that the deacon can sing well and has prepared well. If there is no deacon, or if the deacon cannot sing well, the rubrics say the Easter Proclamation may be sung by one who is not a deacon. Though it does not explicitly mention the priest as a potential proclaimer of the Exsultet, the rubrics note that the priest carries the paschal candle in the procession if there is no deacon, so it follows logically that he could also sing the Easter Proclamation. This is also indicated in the text of the proclamation itself, when it notes that some parts are done by deacon or priest only. This, of course, also depends on whether the priest who is presiding can sing well. If neither the deacon nor the presider can proclaim the Exsultet well, then any member of the assembly may take on this role, again assuming the proper ability. The rubrics note that there are a couple of changes if a layperson sings the proclamation: The section of the introduction that begins My dearest friends is omitted, as is the greeting The Lord be with you. With or without that greeting, the assembly is supposed to sing the responses that are most often used at the beginning of the preface. If this is going to work well at the Easter Vigil, the assembly needs to be familiar with singing these responses. If that does not happen frequently at Sunday Masses, perhaps presiders could sing the prefaces throughout Lent so that the assembly learns the responses by heart. (If you are reading this late in Lent, make plans now for next year!) Also make sure that choir members know that these responses are part of the Exsultet so that they can encourage and support the assembly for these responses as well as for the Amen at the conclusion of the proclamation. Introduction My friends my brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus is risen! Whether we re happy or sad today, whether we woke up feeling hopeful or doubtful, whether we struggle to believe or find faith easy, Jesus is risen and death is defeated. Let us choose to believe it and to rejoice together. Jesus is risen! Alleluia. The Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water can replace the Penitential Rite and Kyrie during the Easter season. Scripture Readings Acts 10:34a, We ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. Col 3:1-4 Christ is raised; seek what is above. 1 Cor 5:6b-8 Let us celebrate the feast. John 20:1-9 They did not understand that he had to rise from the dead. Prayers of the Faithful Presider We join Christians everywhere today to pray for the salvation of the world. Let us pray. Minister For those places where the risen Jesus is proclaimed amid violence for those who celebrate Easter in nations at war for neighborhoods where people live in fear for those whose faith in the risen Christ is a proclamation of light in their dark world we pray, For those places where the risen Jesus is proclaimed amid suffering for those who celebrate Easter in hospital rooms and nursing home chapels, in prison cells and in the prison of drug abuse, alcoholism and mental illness we pray, For those places where the risen Jesus is proclaimed amid poverty for those who celebrate Easter without food or shelter or someone to care for them in their infirmity for those who celebrate Easter hoping for a better world we pray, For those who have died (names) for those who mourn their passing and for those who die with no one to mourn them for those who celebrate Easter with their faith realized in that world where there is no darkness, only light we pray, For this community where the risen Jesus is proclaimed amid all cares, worries and anxiety for those newly received into the church for each person here as we face the struggles of this life, confident in the light of Jesus. May Jesus rise in each of us we pray, Presider Hear our prayers, O God, and bring each of us and all our concerns to the fulfillment your love intends. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. April

preparation: PlANNING & PRAYERS April 11, 2010 Do Not Be Unbelieving Fr. Lawrence Mick 2nd Sunday of Easter Paige Byrne Shortal In today s Gospel, Jesus urges Thomas not to persist in his unbelief but to believe in his resurrected presence with his disciples. One might wonder what he would say to many Catholics today who seem equally reluctant or unable to recognize Christ s presence in the midst of our liturgical assemblies. Remember that the Easter Sundays are the time for mystagogy, both for the newly baptized and for the whole community. The main focus of mystagogy during the Easter season is the experience of initiation, especially the three sacraments celebrated at the Easter Vigil. Of course, we also need to keep in mind the challenge of forming the assembly in good liturgical theology as we prepare to deal with the changes that will accompany the new translation of the missal. While this should go on throughout the year, the Easter Sundays are prime opportunities for such formation. Today s Gospel might suggest a focus on the various ways that Christ is present in the Eucharist. This could be a good weekend to remind people of the four different modes of Christ s presence: in the assembly, through the presider, through the word proclaimed and in the bread and wine shared. It might be helpful to query a few members of the assembly as well as the neophytes prior to this weekend to see what level of awareness you find among your own parishioners. Which of these presences needs attention from the preachers and catechists in your community? Are people clear about the bread and wine truly becoming the body and blood of the Lord? Do they recognize Christ s voice speaking through the lector and Gospel proclaimer? How well do they respond to Christ s invitation to share in his act of worship expressed through the leadership of the presider? How aware are they of Christ s presence in the assembly? If one or two of these seem to need the most attention, make that your focus this weekend. Preachers can celebrate the wonder of the gift of Christ s presence. Bulletin inserts can elaborate on all four ways that Christ is present in the Mass. Petitions can pray for a deepened awareness of the Lord and the grace to make his presence known wherever we go this week. You might also spend some time thinking creatively about ways to deepen the assembly s awareness of these various forms of presence. Would it help to have the assembly stand and face one another (maybe even bowing to each other to acknowledge Christ s presence) before the opening procession enters among them? Would more silence before and during the Liturgy of the Word heighten awareness of Christ s presence in the word? Introduction My friends, today s Gospel is about Thomas the Doubter, who, one week after the first Easter, could not believe that Jesus was alive and speaking to him. He is so like us, refusing to believe that good can triumph over evil. Let us today call to mind where we are tempted to lose hope for peace, for love, for joy, for goodness. Let us believe in life from death, in the triumph of good over evil. We suggest that the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water replace the Penitential Rite and Kyrie during the Easter season. Scripture Readings Acts 5:12-16 Great numbers came to believe. Rev 1:9-11a, 12-13, I was dead, but now I live forever. John 20:19-31 Thomas the doubter meets Jesus. Prayers of the Faithful Presider Christians everywhere pray today for the salvation of the world. Together, let us pray. Minister Let us pray for peace for those who live with racial violence, religious intolerance and war. For peace everywhere we pray, For the church: for those newly baptized or received into the church for a warm welcome and for their nurturing in the faith we pray, We pray for our nation for the beneficial use of our taxes for education and medical care for everyone for the care of the environment and attention to our cities for public transportation, free libraries and support of the arts we pray, For those struggling with habits of sin for those who are afraid to go to confession for those communities where there is no priest for the sacraments for God s blessing on confessors, counselors and spiritual directors we pray, Let us remember those for whom we are especially concerned and who have asked for our prayers (pause) and for the sick, the infirm and the elderly and those who care for their needs we pray, We remember those who have died (names) for them and for all those grieving the loss of someone they love we pray, Presider Merciful and loving God, you revealed the mystery of your love that we might share your life. Hear the prayers of your people and fill us with faith in your love for us and confidence in your power to provide what we need. Give us this day and every day the joy of your presence. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our risen Savior and Lord. Amen. 24 April 2010

preparation: PlANNING & PRAYERS April 18, 2010 Joining the Heavenly Assembly Fr. Lawrence Mick 3rd Sunday of Easter Paige Byrne Shortal This Sunday s reading from Revelation offers us a view of the liturgy of heaven. Angels too numerous to count surround the throne and offer praise to the Lamb that was slain. Then every creature in heaven and on earth joins in the praise. There is a long tradition in the church, especially in the Eastern churches, of seeing our liturgical assemblies as part of a much larger assembly. We worship in union with all the angels and the saints who have gone before us in the faith. Our worship is never merely the act of a local group of believers but part of a universal liturgy. Perhaps Catholics had a better sense of this in ages past because of the proliferation of images of the saints in our churches before Vatican II. More often, I suspect, those images prompted prayer to the saints rather than any awareness that they were sharing in our worship and we were sharing in theirs. Some contemporary churches have placed saints images behind and alongside the assembly (instead of in front of them) as a reminder that we are part of this larger communion of saints at worship. If you have some moveable images of the saints, such as icons or pictures or smaller statues, consider whether they might be positioned around the assembly this weekend to remind people that our worship transcends this time and place. Yet as we call the heavenly assembly to mind, we also have to respect the local assembly. Our worship is incarnated in a particular time and place. A fundamental principle of the liturgical renewal mandated by the Second Vatican Council is that the liturgy must be adapted to local peoples and cultures. Even in the liturgy, the church has no wish to impose a rigid uniformity in matters which do not implicate the faith or the good of the whole community; rather does she respect and foster the genius and talents of the various races and peoples (#37). This requires a balanced understanding of liturgical law. While the law is not to be ignored, neither is it to be followed slavishly. Pastors must therefore realize that when the liturgy is celebrated something more is required than the mere observance of the laws governing valid and lawful celebration; it is also their duty to ensure that the faithful take part fully aware of what they are doing, actively engaged in the rite, and enriched by its effects (#11). There is a trend today to return to a very legalistic approach to liturgy and rubrics. That direction leads to a dead end. Good pastors and planners must always balance universal laws and the needs of the local assembly to foster truly living and life-giving worship. Introduction My friends, in today s Gospel, the risen Lord, one who was dead and in the tomb and yet who lives again, appears to the disciples as they are out fishing. Do you know what he says to them? He says, Come have breakfast. Come have breakfast?! Sometimes faith is pretty simple. Jesus says to us today, Break your fast. Don t starve yourselves. I am here to feed you. We suggest that the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water replace the Penitential Rite and Kyrie during the Easter season. Scripture Readings Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41 The apostles rejoice that they are worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus. Rev 5:11-14 John s vision: Worthy is the Lamb! John 21:1-19 Jesus appears a third time to the disciples and eats with them. Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, let us pray with confidence to God, who loves us and knows our hungers and hears our prayers. Minister For peace everywhere: among all nations, within all communities and families, in every heart for the peace of the risen savior we pray, For our community today and for communities of Christians everywhere for believers who care for others, tend the sick, assist the poor, attend to outcasts and visit the imprisoned, and for all those who support others by their prayers we pray, For all young people for those children preparing for their first holy Communion, for those who will be confirmed and for all those who will graduate this year we pray, For those engaged to be married and all those young in their marriages for the time to nurture their relationships and all that they need to grow in love with each other we pray, For those who are sick or suffering in any way for those struggling with depression and for whom the longer days are a painful contrast to the darkness inside for all who live with emotional illness we pray, We remember those who have died (names) and for all who mourn their passing we pray, Presider God of all people everywhere, hear our prayers and the prayers of all who call on you. Bring us together to live with you in the kingdom of heaven. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. April

preparation: PlANNING & PRAYERS April 25, 2010 Language God Understands Fr. Lawrence Mick 4th Sunday of Easter Paige Byrne Shortal In our second reading today from Revelation, John gives us another vision of heaven, as he did last week. This time the assembly is not of angels but of a great multitude of believers who survived the time of distress by remaining faithful to the Lamb, even at the cost of their lives. This multitude, John tells us, is composed of believers from every nation, race, people and tongue. Many parishes in North America will find those words to be a good description of their own assemblies. Increasingly, our parishes are made up of people from all over the world, some of whom are recent immigrants while others have been here for several generations. This is part of the glory and the burden of being a catholic church. We have members around the world, and when people migrate to different countries, they know that they belong to the Catholic church wherever they end up. In an age when the assembly had little active part in the liturgy, people could simply come to a church and say their prayers in their own languages. Now that we are all expected to take an active role, however, the challenge of multiple languages and cultures faces all of us. Even among those who live in parishes that do not yet have significant numbers of people from other cultures, it is important for worship to reflect the multicultural nature of our church today. Otherwise, we run the risk of nurturing a parochial and unrealistic sense of who we are as a church. It is important to approach this challenge as an opportunity for growth and more vital worship rather than as a burden we must bear. As you encourage your assembly to be more aware of other cultures among them, whether in your local parish or in the larger church, help them to see this diversity as a gift. We are blessed to have brothers and sisters from many backgrounds, and they bring a wealth of music and customs that can enrich our worship. A possible approach today is to remind the newly baptized (and the rest of the assembly) that they have joined a church that is worldwide and embraces people of every nation, race, people and tongue. The language issue is probably the biggest challenge, of course. We have gotten used to praying and singing in our own native tongues, so it can be disconcerting at first to try to learn a song in another language. Many of our ancestors worshiped for their whole lives with the liturgy in Latin even though it was not their native language so we do have precedent for this. It helps, of course, if the song is bilingual or even trilingual so that more than one group can feel at home with it. Introduction My friends, today Jesus tells us that his sheep hear his voice. There are many strange voices in our world today, and sometimes it is difficult to discern true voices from false ones. A prayer was spoken over us when we were baptized. As we renew our baptismal promises, let us pray this prayer for ourselves, for our young people and for anyone for whom we are concerned: The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the mute speak. May he open our ears to receive his word and our mouths to proclaim the Gospel, to the praise and glory of God the Father. We suggest that the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water replace the Penitential Rite and Kyrie during the Easter season. Scripture Readings Acts 13:14, Paul and Barnabas preach to the Jews and then the gentiles. Rev 7:9, 14b-17 The Lamb will shepherd those from every race and nation. John 10:27-30 My sheep hear my voice. Prayers of the Faithful Presider On this Good Shepherd Sunday, let us pray for the church: for ears to hear God s voice and the will to follow where it leads. Minister For those called to leadership within the church: for bishops and pastors; school principals and hospital administrators; for all who bear the responsibilities of leadership we pray, For those called to offer counsel: for confessors, spiritual directors and therapists; for investment counselors and employment agencies and those who offer guidance to young people we pray, For those called to offer comfort: for doctors and nurses; chaplains and hospice workers and all who sit with those who grieve we pray, For those called to be prophets: for those who work for justice and witness for peace and all those who voice the concerns of the voiceless we pray, For those called to pass on the faith: for teachers and writers; preachers and catechists; parents and grandparents we pray, We remember those who have died (names) and for those who find the springtime especially difficult as they long for their loved one we pray, Presider Loving God, you sent us Jesus to be our savior, our shepherd and our guide. Quiet our minds and enlighten our hearts so that we might hear his voice amid the many voices of this world. Hear our prayers this day and every day, we pray in Jesus name. Amen. 26 April 2010
