Michael McMahon ALL SOULS November 2, 2008 Suggested Responsorial Psalm: Ps (26) 27 The readings for today s Mass may be chosen from among any of the texts provided for Mass for the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (no. 668), or for Masses for the Dead (nos ). The Lectionary provides a rich variety of responsorial psalms. Psalm 27, with its spirit of confident hope, makes it a fitting choice for the the last weeks of Ordinary Time. Entrance Rite Because today s celebration focuses so strongly on the gathering of God s people to form the church, and in light of the first reading, the liturgy might appropriately begin today with the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling of Holy Water, which recalls our common baptism. If this rite is used, consider using the Easter season antiphon I Saw Water (based on today s first reading) or a song which relates to the themes of church and baptism, such as Church of God (Daly) or Out of Darkness (Walker). 6 preparation: Planning & prayers November 2, 2008 Find prayers for All Saints, Nov. 1, on the Celebration Web site. All Souls Day Fr. Lawrence Mick Commemoration of All Souls Paige Byrne Shortal A t various p o i n t s through the year, we encounter feasts with options for the readings. This Sunday, however, brings us to a celebration that has a whole list of readings from which the three used this weekend can be chosen. This first large group of options is found in the Lectionary at #668, but note that you can also choose from those for the Masses for the Dead at Lectionary # That second set of options is found in Volume IV of the Lectionary, not in the Sunday volume. So the first question is: Who will decide which readings to use, and on what basis? It seems rather obvious that those who will be preaching this Sunday need to be involved in the decision, and it may happen that the preacher claims the right to decide. If so, however, they would be wise to consult with planners or other parishioners to see which readings speak most clearly to the assembly. You might also want to consult with the musicians before choosing the responsorial psalm to see what settings they know or have available. Once the decisions are made, be sure to provide adequate preparation time for the various ministers, especially the lectors and musicians. Many parishes provide the Workbook for Lectors so those ministers can prepare each week. There are readings suggested there, so make sure that the lectors know if you choose different ones. (If you choose the ones in the Workbook, you still need to decide which second reading to use.) It may be necessary in such a case to print out the texts for the assigned lectors so that they can prepare properly, but make sure they proclaim the text during the liturgy from the Lectionary. The prayer texts for today s celebration are found at November 2 in the Proper of the Saints in the back of the Sacramentary. Note that there are various options here, too. Not only are there three sets of orations, but there are also five different prefaces that may be used. Such choices are commonly left up to the presider, who unfortunately often does not decide until the moment arrives. It may be useful for planners to suggest which texts speak most richly to them, allowing the final decision to go to the presider. This is a perfect opportunity, of course, to offer support to those who have lost loved ones. In a small parish, all those buried from the parish in the past year might be mentioned by name in the petitions or at the announcements. In larger parishes, a book with the names of the deceased might be displayed today. Be careful not to sound exclusively concerned with recent deaths, though; people grieve for years after a loss, and they should all feel included in the parish s prayers. Introduction On this All Souls Day, we remember those who have died and those who are grieving the loss of someone dear to them. Let us ask God for the grace to live our lives so that when we die, we will have few regrets about how we spent our time on this earth. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you conquered death and rose to new life: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you wept at the death of your friend Lazarus: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you comfort those who mourn and bring all of us to new life: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Isa 25:6, 7-9: God will wipe away every tear. Rom 6:3-9: If we have died with Christ, we will be raised with him. John 6:37-40: I will raise you up on the last day. Or select other readings from Masses for the Dead Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, our God hears every voice that is lifted in prayer. Confident of our God s love for us, let us pray. Minister For our loved ones who have passed from this life: for those we dearly miss we pray, For those who died with whom we did not have a last word, a final embrace; for comfort in the knowledge that we will meet again we pray, For those who died leaving us with unresolved hurts or bitter words; for faith that all is forgiven we pray, For those who died by violence and in fear: for victims of war, poverty or injustice; for those who died with no one to mourn their passing we pray, For those of our community and our families who have died this past year; for all those who have been buried from this place of worship (for all who are buried in our cemetery) we pray, For those who are grieving: for comfort for the wound that will not heal; for companionship for those who are lonely; for confidence for those who are afraid for their future we pray, (USA) Finally, let us pray for our nation as we elect our new leaders on Tuesday. For wisdom and clear thinking; for honesty and integrity; for a peaceful process... we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, you have promised that death is not the end of life. Give faith to the doubtful, courage to the fearful and comfort to the suffering, and inspire all of us to trust in your care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 18 November 2008

preparation: Planning & prayers November 9, 2008 The Lateran Basilica in Rome Fr. Lawrence Mick Dedication of the Basilica Paige Byrne Shortal Once again, the Sunday readings are displaced by a feast, and this one may take some explanation for the assembly to understand why they are celebrating it. The church commonly known as St. John Lateran is more properly named the Church of St. John on the Lateran. It is located on the Lateran Hill in Rome and is dedicated to both John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. None of this would warrant a universal feast of the church, however, except for the fact that this church is the cathedral church of the bishop of Rome. Many people assume that St. Peter s is the pope s home church since most of the major liturgies are celebrated there, but his official cathedral is St. John. It is known as the Omnium urbis et orbis Ecclesiarum Mater et Caput: The head and mother church of the city and the world. Given to the pope by Constantine the Great in the fourth century, San Giovanni in Laterano is one of the four major basilicas in the city. Legend says the original building was dedicated as a church on November 9 in 324. The dedication of this church is celebrated throughout the world because it stands as a symbol of our unity with Rome. Like all celebrations of church dedications, it really celebrates the living church more than the building. The building becomes a reminder that we are living stones who together form the church. The prayer texts for this feast can be found by looking for November 9 in the proper of the saints in the back of the Sacramentary. That entry refers you to the Common of the Dedication of a Church. You will find there two sets of prayers; unless you are celebrating on the Lateran Hill this weekend, you will use the second set. Take time to read through these texts and see how clearly they focus on the people who form the church. The preface is P53, the second option for the Dedication of a Church. The readings are found in the Lectionary right after the All Souls texts at #651. Once again, it is essential that lectors and musicians are clear about the texts that will be used this weekend and where to find them. The proper readings are in the Workbook for Lectors this week. In the petitions, pray for the Holy Father, of course, since this is his proper church. Pray for the unity of the church throughout the world. Pray for the ecumenical movement, that we might one day be one church with all our Christian brothers and sisters. Pray that we might be the church that Christ intends us to be. Introduction St. John Lateran, the first Christian basilica, was dedicated on November 9 in the year 324. This building is the cathedral of the pope not St. Peter s, but humble St. John Lateran. We celebrate all that it symbolizes: our unity in Christ, our call to be the community of believers, our worship and our going forth again and again to be Christ in the world. Let us ask for mercy for those times when we have not honored the temple we are. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you drove out those who were dishonoring the temple: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you made of your body a temple of the Lord: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you call us to be the temple of the Holy Spirit: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Ezek 47:1-2, 8-9, 12 The water flowing from the temple gives life. 1 Cor 3:9c-11, You are the temple of God. John 2:13-22 Jesus is the new temple. Prayers of the Faithful Presider Called to be a holy community, let us fulfill our duty as believers and pray for the world. Minister We pray for the church throughout the world among people of every nation, race and language: for holiness, humility and joy we pray, We pray for peace throughout the world: for diplomats and peacemakers who discover common ground and for all people who seek to avoid war and strive to live together in peace we pray, (USA) This Tuesday is Veterans Day. Let us remember those men and women who served in the Armed Forces: for those who came home hurt in body and mind; for those who never came home; for those serving today and those who love them we pray, Let us pray for those who most need our prayers: for the very sick, the very old and those who are infirm, the very poor, refugees, those whose lives are in danger and all those in the path of war we pray, We remember those who have died (names). Let us remember especially those who have lost their lives in war and for all those who are mourning the loss of a loved one we pray, Presider Loving God, look upon us today and on all your people gathered all over the world. Bless us and make us one people, your people, forever and ever. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. November

preparation: Planning & prayers November 16, 2008 Putting Talents to Work Fr. Lawrence Mick 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Paige Byrne Shortal The Gospel parable of the talents this Sunday challenges us to examine how well we are using the gifts God has given us to carry on Christ s work. Even though the word talent in the Gospel refers to an ancient coin, the fact that they are given out according to each servant s ability and that the servants are judged by their use of the gift naturally has led people for centuries to make the link between the coin and our personal talents. Planners might begin this examination by asking how well each person s abilities on the team are being used. Not everyone is equally good at every task. Do you have the best people writing petitions, the best people responsible for the liturgical environment, etc.? Answering that question well may require some group discernment, since we don t always recognize our own gifts until others point them out to us. A second area to consider is the recruiting of people for all the various ministries of worship. How does this happen in your parish? Is it simply a matter of volunteers deciding for themselves that they have gifts for proclamation or for singing or for decorating? Or is there a process of discernment that seeks to match each person s unique talents with the needs of the parish community? The issue of talents arises at the very beginning: Are new ministers sought by a general request for volunteers, or do you seek out people whose gifts have become evident to parish liturgical leaders? Even if you start with a volunteer request, do you then invite people to audition for ministry so that their talents and skills can be discerned before they begin to serve in a particular ministry? This is obviously more important for lectors and musicians and cantors than for some other ministries, but each form of service has its own requirements that need some discernment. Another aspect of the parable, though, might prompt a cautionary note. The third servant is judged harshly because he tried to play it safe, afraid to take the risk that would produce a reward. Sometimes we have to take risks in ministry, too. A person who volunteers as a lector may not have the skills to proclaim well, but if there is an openness to learn and develop those skills, if there is a willingness to take the risk of growth, then such a person should be trained and nurtured. Often it is this willingness to grow that is most important in discerning who can serve the community well. Moving to a discernment-based model for recruiting ministers may seem scary at first, too. Do you have the courage to take the risk? Introduction My friends, in November the church calls us to remember that this life is passing. This week s parable is about how to live that life: fully alive and employing all that God has given us. Let us pray for the grace not to squander the gifts of this good life. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you came to lead us out of darkness: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you came to show us the way to a full and holy life: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Prov 31:10-13, 19-20, The woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. 1 Thess 5:1-6 We are children of the light. Stay awake. Matt 25:14-30 The parable of the talents Prayers of the Faithful Presider Brothers and sisters, it is our faith that God hears our prayers and that prayer makes a difference in this world. Confident in that faith, let us pray. Minister Let us pray for the church: for Christian communities everywhere; for our Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters; for respectful dialogue among all believers we pray, For peace among the nations: for light, wisdom and clear thinking in the face of fear we pray, For those who have been elected to office and for those who have served and will soon step down; for a peaceful transition we pray, For all those whose lives are threatened: those whose work is dangerous; those who live with violence and the fear of violence; for all those in harm s way we pray, For those who are frustrated in the use of their gifts and talents and are seeking a way to serve more effectively; and for those whose lives are a gift of service to others we pray, We remember those who are sick or in pain; for all those for whom we have promised to pray we pray, We remember those who have died (names). For all those who are dying with no one to pray for them we pray, Presider Loving and generous God, you give us all that we need to become the holy men and women you call us to be. Inspire in us the desire to live full and gracious lives faithful to your Gospel, trusting in your promises. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. 20 November 2008

preparation: Planning & prayers All Time Belongs to Him Fr. Lawrence Mick November 23, 2008 Find prayers for Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, on the Celebration Web site. Christ the King Paige Byrne Shortal The solemnity of Christ the King brings us to the end of another liturgical year. This feast is like an echo of the Easter Vigil, when we proclaim that all time and all the ages belong to Christ as we prepare the paschal candle. Ending our year with this celebration reminds us that the whole year, and every year, belongs to the Lord. We might all take a little time to ask ourselves how fully we have given ourselves to Christ in the past year and how we might embrace his kingship more fully in the year ahead. One way that we are invited to embrace Christ every year at this time is through the Campaign for Human Development. Though some dioceses choose another date, this weekend is the nationally designated time for the CHD collection in the United States. The date is chosen because it falls just before the civil observance of Thanksgiving Day, inviting us to share the gifts for which we give thanks. One could hardly imagine more appropriate readings to support this effort, however, than the ones we will hear this weekend. In the first reading, God says that the Lord will be the shepherd to seek out the lost and the strayed and the injured and the sick. The implication is that we should do the same, and if that implication is not clear in the first reading, the Gospel makes it hard to miss. This famous passage from Matthew s Gospel calls into question most of the assumptions people tend to make about salvation and religion and what really matters. While it may have been chosen for this spot in the Lectionary because it depicts Christ as a judge seated on a royal throne, it also reminds us that serving this king is quite different from serving other masters. If we want to serve this king, we must do it through serving the least of his brothers and sisters. Those who compose the petitions today might well draw from the Gospel categories. Pray for the hungry and the thirsty. Pray for strangers and aliens in our midst. Pray for the homeless and the impoverished. Pray for the sick and those in prison. And pray, above all, that we will have the courage and love to serve such people in Christ s name. This could also be a good day to remind the assembly, in preaching or in the bulletin, of the challenge of recognizing the face of Christ in all those we meet. The better we learn to do that when we gather for worship, showing hospitality and care for all those who gather with us, the better we will become at recognizing Christ in others once we leave the liturgy. Introduction Today we celebrate Jesus Christ as our King. We are his subjects. In the Gospel Jesus tells us how we will be judged at the end of our life. Let us listen as if our lives depended on it. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you are the servant king who dies for his people: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the good king who defends the lives of the poor: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you command us to imitate you in all things: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Ezek 34:11-12, The shepherd will judge between one sheep and another. 1 Cor 15:20-26, 28 Christ is the king who will hand over the kingdom. Matt 25:31-46 The final judgment and the commandment to serve the least Prayers of the Faithful Presider Brothers and sisters, today we proclaim that God is God of the whole world and that the salvation won by Jesus Christ is salvation for all. Let us remember our duty as believers and pray for the whole world. Minister Let us pray for the church: for those who bring the message of hope to those tempted to despair; who comfort those who are suffering; who make the world a vision of the kingdom of God... we pray, We pray for our country: for responsibility, honesty, fairness and those virtues necessary for our citizens to live in peace with each other and with all nations of the world we pray, For those with Gospel privileges: for those who are hungry, thirsty, without clothing or shelter; the sick, the imprisoned, the refugee and the stranger we pray, We remember those who cannot be with us today: those who are ill or in pain or living with a debilitating condition; those who serve as missionaries; those in the Armed Forces and stationed far away we pray, We remember those who have died... (names). For all those who grieve and will especially miss their loved ones on Thanksgiving Day we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, you sent us your son Jesus as a servant king to establish your kingdom. Grant us what we need to choose to be members of that kingdom and to live out your Gospel message here on earth. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. November

preparation: Planning & prayers November 30, 2008 The Coming of Our God Today begins the season of Advent and a new liturgical year. The turning of the year means a new cycle of the Lectionary. On Sundays we begin Year B. On weekdays, we will be in Year 1, which is in Volume 2 of the four volumes of the Lectionary. Make sure the proper books are prepared and marked before Masses this weekend, and remind the lectors and musicians of the shift so they prepare the right texts. The arrival of Advent brings into focus some basic issues of liturgical planning. In rather quick succession, we will celebrate Advent and Christmas, a brief Ordinary Time, and then Lent, Triduum and Easter. Each of these seasons has its own character. Each calls for appropriate décor and music and rituals to mark the season. Many members of our assemblies do not keep track of the liturgical calendar, so planners need to keep in mind the importance of distinguishing the seasons in ways that invite people to enter into the spirit of each one. Music is obviously a key element in such planning. Every season has certain songs that the assembly will recognize immediately as belonging to the season. Planners should make sure that the musical selections make it obvious what season we are celebrating. Too often musicians want to introduce so much new music that the familiar songs linked to a season Fr. Lawrence Mick are ignored, or they simply choose songs that can be used on any Sunday and do not carry the mood and themes of the season. Décor, too, can help people recognize and enter into the spirit of a liturgical season. It is important to be consistent. Allowing Christmas décor before Advent is completed distorts both seasons. Removing Easter décor halfway through the Fifty Days discourages people from continuing the celebration all the way to Pentecost. World AIDS Day: This Monday, December 1, is designated by the World Health Organization as World AIDS Day, a time to focus on the devastation caused by this disease that afflicts millions around the world, especially in Africa. This weekend is a good time to remember victims of the disease in prayer and to invite people to volunteer to care for local victims and to work for appropriate funding for research into better medicines and potential cures or vaccines. If there is a need to correct misconceptions (ask around your community to see what people really think), remind the assembly that this is not a gay disease, nor does it have a cure. Much more needs to be done to help those who have contracted the disease around the world. See hhs.gov/aidsawarenessdays/days/world/index. html for more information. First Sunday of Advent Paige Byrne Shortal Introduction and Penitential Rite On this first Sunday of Advent our readings speak to us of the last days. The candles of the Advent wreath remind us of the passing of time. As we light the first candle, let us pray for the grace to make of our lives a preparation for eternal life with God. [As the following is sung or spoken, the first candle is lit.] Lord Jesus, you were born into the world to reveal God s love for us: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you promise to be with us until the end of time: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are born again in each of us and in your community: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Isa 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7 Why do you let us wander, O Lord? 1 Cor 1:3-9 We await the revelation of Jesus. Mark 13:33-37 Be watchful and alert: you do not know when the time will come. Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, let us bring to God our intentions for our world, our neighbors and ourselves, praying: Be born in us; be born in our world. Minister That wars will cease and the world may know peace, we pray Be born in us; be born in our world. That Christians of every nation and every congregation may witness to the love which creates and powers everything that is good, we pray Be born in us; be born in our world. That those with food to share will feed the hungry, we pray Be born in us; be born in our world. That strangers will be kind and neighbors will be gentle with one another, we pray Be born in us; be born in our world. That children will be nurtured in loving, caring families, we pray Be born in us; be born in our world. That the sick will be made well and the dying will be prepared for heaven, we pray Be born in us; be born in our world. We remember those who have died (names). That those who mourn will be comforted, we pray... Be born in us; be born in our world. Presider Creator God, hear our prayers as we prepare for the great feast of Christmas. Help us prepare a place for Jesus to be born in us and make us Christbearers to the world in what we say, in what we do, in what we desire. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.
