PREPARATION: PLANNING & PRAYERS December 4, 2005 Saints in Advent Fr. Lawrence Mick 2nd Sunday of Advent Paige Byrne Shortal This week brings us several observances of saints who can help focus our Advent devotion. Tuesday is the memorial of St. Nicholas, the ancestor of Santa Claus. Though it is only an optional memorial, there is value in fostering the old custom of giving small gifts on his feast. It can be a great way to teach children the origins of Santa and remind them that Christmas is about giving. Parishes could give a small gift to each child as they leave Mass today or simply remind parents, via the bulletin, of the custom of giving such gifts for St. Nicholas. A brief history of how St. Nicholas became Santa Claus might be included in the bulletin to help parents with catechesis. Thursday brings us a holy day of obligation, our patronal feast in the United States, the Immaculate Conception of Mary. There may be some sense of competition in many parishes today between this feast and the coming memorial of Our Lady of Guadalupe next week. Among many Hispanic Catholics, the memorial is more important than the solemnity. If this is an issue in your community, it may help to stress the similarities between the feasts. Both, of course, are feasts of Mary. Both are patronal feasts: Immaculate Conception for the United States and Guadalupe for all the Americas. And the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is very similar to the image commonly used for the Immaculate Conception. Both feast days remind us that December is a good month to foster healthy Marian devotion. The final memorial of the week, that of St. Juan Diego (Cuatitlatoatzin) on Friday, finds a place in this Marian perspective, too. He is the one who saw the Virgin at Guadalupe and had her image appear on his cloak. As you prepare to celebrate these feasts, remember that all of them occur as part of Advent. While Marian hymns and references will be strong, they should not totally displace Advent themes. In words of introduction and in petitions, highlight the role of Mary as bearer of the one whose second coming we await. Keep some Advent music in each celebration, too. Look for any hymns that link Mary and Advent. OCP has a text by Willard Jabusch that does this well: See How the Virgin Waits. Another by Marianne Misetich is called The Whole World is Waiting for Love. Gather has Savior of the Nations, Come. Even some that don t mention Mary, like Come, O Long Expected Savior, remind us of Mary s role. The God Whom Earth and Sea and Sky also links Mary and Advent themes. INTRODUCTION AND PENITENTIAL RITE On this second Sunday of Advent we hear John the Baptist calling us to repent and to prepare a way for the Lord. As we light two candles on the Advent wreath, let us recall that our time on this earth is short and ask God to make us ready for heaven. (As the following is sung or spoken, the first candle is lit.) Lord Jesus, you call us to repent of our sins: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you call us to live in holiness and peace: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the way that leads to a holy and peaceful life: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS Isa 40:1-5,9-11 Comfort, says our God. Prepare the way of the Lord. 2 Pet 3:8-14 Wait for the Lord, conducting yourselves in holiness. Mark 1:1-8 John the Baptist prepares the way of the Lord. PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Called by John the Baptist to prepare for the coming of the Lord, let us pray. MINISTER Let us pray for our church for the social justice ministries of the church and for all those who benefit from these ministries we pray, For all the nations of the world for unity where there is division; for dialogue where there is misunderstanding; for generosity where there is self-interest; for a world that is safe for all peoples we pray, For those whose lives are threatened for the very poor, the very old, the very young and those yet to be born for those in the midst of war and all who live with violence for all those whose lives must be protected we pray, For those who are sick (names) for those who suffer from colds and flu and the ailments of winter for doctors and nurses, therapists and technicians, and all those who participate in the healing ministry of Christ we pray, For those who have died (names) for those who grieve for someone they love whose absence is especially difficult during this season we pray, God our Father, you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus. Fill us with your grace and help us to be heralds of God s presence in our world. We ask this through Jesus Christ your Son and our Lord. Amen. DECEMBER

PREPARATION: EXTRA HOMILY AND PRAYERS December 8, 2005 Chosen, Mary Chose Homily by Fr. James Smith Immaculate Conception Paige Byrne Shortal Paul wrote that we were chosen in Christ and not just recently, but before the foundation of the world. That is really looking forward in making a choice! We hear a lot of about choices these days; freedom is the battle cry. We insist on being free to choose anything we like at any time. But there is much less talk about choosing well. Choice is simply a human power we have, but choosing is an art that needs practice. Life presents us with a host of choices from cereal to clothes, but none more important than marriage partner and work. Those choices are indeed lonely experiences in which others can t be of much help. Freud said that in those two cases, we should simply go with our gut. We might rather look to a slightly higher organ, but the point is clear. Important choices make us anxious. The most important choice most people make is the choice of spouse. They have to reduce all the people in the world down to the ones they know and further into the ones they like. And that s the easy part. Then they have to put themselves on offer. The proposal is made infinitely easier by being preceded by a courtship in which it was clear that they liked each other. Still, the actual experience of offering and accepting love is momentous. That is when we realize that being loved is better than loving. Mary did not have to choose a mate. That was probably done for her. But she had another very difficult choice: whether to be the mother of God. That involved more than the inconvenience of normal pregnancy and child-bearing. She had to choose whether she wanted a child not produced by a husband s love, and whether she wanted to be a surrogate mother for somebody else s child, divine or not. She checked her stomach; no help there. It just churned furiously. Then she looked higher, into her heart. That is when she realized that she was not making this choice in a vacuum, that she was not initiating some preposterous arrangement. It suddenly occurred to her that she was not really choosing she had already been chosen! How easy it was to choose God s will when she understood that she had already been chosen for that precise assignment. Choices are so much easier if they are mutual. Loving is much more delightful if we are assured of being loved. And that is why the feast of the Immaculate Conception is a celebration of both Mary and us. Mary chose God after first being chosen by God; we choose to love God after first being loved by God. Maybe not an immaculate love, but lovely enough. INTRODUCTION Today we look to Mary, who was prepared to be the Christ-bearer and who is the model for what we are becoming. Let us pray fervently to cooperate with grace and become the holy men and women God intends us to be so that we also may bear Christ to the world. PENITENTIAL RITE Lord Jesus, you are Son of God and Son of Mary: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you came to show us the way to holiness: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, help us to say Yes! to grace: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS Gen 3:9-15,20 The story of the fall of humankind. Eph 1:3-6,11-12 We are chosen and called to be holy. Luke 1:26-38 Gabriel tells Mary she is pregnant with God s son. PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL My friends, let us pray to be like Mary, to be people who can say Yes to God s plan for us. MINISTER Let us pray for those who say Yes to peace for those who work for justice for leaders of nations for diplomats for those who work among the poor we pray, For those who say Yes to service for those who tend to the sick visit the imprisoned care for the poor listen to those who are troubled For all who minister to others we pray, For those who struggle with their Yes for pregnant women who carry their child with fear for spouses and families struggling to love each other for those in the midst of difficult changes with new jobs, new homes, new relationships with loved ones for those who are seriously ill for those who are dying we pray, Let us remember those who have said Yes to us our parents who gave us life all who nurtured us all who loved us all who taught us, believed in us and encouraged us we pray, Good and gracious God, you chose humble Mary as a fit dwelling for your son; you are present wherever human beings live. Help us to honor your presence among us, and make us wise and strong enough to build each other up into your city on earth, the vision of your peace, the body of your Son, who is Lord for ever and ever. Amen. 22 DECEMBER 2005

PREPARATION: PLANNING & PRAYERS December 11, 2005 Popular Religion in Advent Fr. Lawrence Mick 3rd Sunday of Advent Paige Byrne Shortal This week brings us two opportunities to draw on popular religiosity and integrate it with our liturgical celebrations. The first, of course, is the memorial of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Monday. Ideally we should celebrate the memorial on its day. Pastoral needs, however, may prompt some anticipation of the celebration on Sunday. It s probably not a good idea to try to insert it into the celebration of the Third Sunday of Advent, but an afternoon or evening gathering might be welcomed by parishioners and could be linked to Evening Prayer. Consult well in advance with Hispanic groups in the parish to see what would work well. The second opportunity also comes from the Hispanic tradition. The custom of Las Posadas begins on the evening of December 16. This novena, under various names, is popular in much of Latin America and the Philippines. It commemorates the journey of Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem, so it is in tune with the season of Advent. Beginning with December 17, Advent focuses more strongly on the first coming of the Lord, so even the timing works well. The Posadas processions weave together themes of Advent waiting, hospitality and social justice. If you have Hispanic parishioners, they can probably fill you in on all the details. If not, a quick Internet search will produce a variety of descriptions. The main elements of the custom today are the procession to various houses until one admits the travelers, followed by a party each night in that final house. These parties often include a piñata filled with candies and other treats. From one perspective, this custom involves nine nights of parties before Christmas, which may not be the ideal for Advent. On the other hand, the parties are related to the journey to Bethlehem, so they are not exactly jumping the gun on Christmas itself. Moreover, parishes can make efforts to emphasize the spiritual dimensions of the procession. The origins of this custom derive from St. Ignatius Loyola, who suggested a Christmas novena in the 16th century. St. John of the Cross shaped that idea into a pageant in 1580, and it was introduced to Mexico in It was, at first, a very solemn celebration in church, but it soon began to be celebrated in homes and became more festive. A Note on a Word: In the opening prayer today, the Latin speaks of the coming festival of our Savior s birth but the English refers to the birthday of Christ. That encourages a misunderstanding of Christmas, so the alternative prayer might be a better choice. INTRODUCTION AND PENITENTIAL RITE This Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday, and our readings invite us to Rejoice always! As we light the rose candle on our Advent wreath, let us remind ourselves of the happy eagerness of little children who wait for Christmas. (The first candle is lit as we sing the following.) Lord Jesus, you came to proclaim God s love for us: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are Emanuel our God with us: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, help us to recognize your presence among us: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS Isa 61:1-2a,10-11 Glad tidings to the poor. 1 Thess 5:16-24 Rejoice. Pray without ceasing. John 1:6-8;19-24 A voice cries in the wilderness. PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Brothers and sisters, on this day we have heard proclaimed the promises of our God that the blind see and the deaf hear and the lame leap for joy. Confident in God s promises, let us pray. MINISTER For the mission of the church in the world for all those who work as missionaries, catechists, and in the efforts of peace and justice for the strength to continue the work of service to all that Jesus came to do we pray, Let us pray for people throughout the world who need our prayers for those suffering with illness or disabilities for those living with violence and poverty for all those whose lives are threatened we pray, Let us pray for those for whom we are most concerned for those we love for those who are sick or homebound and could not be with us today (names) for all those for whom we have promised to pray we pray, We remember those who have died (names) and for those who grieve and find their loss particularly difficult as Christmas approaches we pray, Let us ask God for what we need this Advent for companionship if we are lonely for peace if we are distracted for time with those we love if we are too busy for gratitude for our blessings and generosity toward those not so blest we pray, Good and gracious God, you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus. Give us what we need as we turn away from sin toward lives of grace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. DECEMBER

PREPARATION: PLANNING AND PRAYERS December 18, 2005 Make It Last Fr. Lawrence Mick Fourth Sunday of Advert Paige Byrne Shortal This is one of those rare years when Advent lasts its full length. With Christmas falling on Sunday, we get the whole fourth week of Advent to complete our preparations for the feast. As always, we are called to maintain the Advent spirit throughout the season. That will be easier this year than next, when Christmas will fall on Monday and the fourth week of Advent will last only one day. There will be less pressure this year to decorate before this Sunday arrives. With both Christmas and New Year s Day falling on Sunday, parishes also have fewer major celebrations to prepare this year. The Feast of the Holy Family will be observed on Dec. 30 rather than a Sunday, but we will not have the usual Sunday feast day Sunday feast day Sunday marathon to negotiate. Parish leaders should consider carefully what Mass schedule will work best for the next two Sundays. It would be nice, perhaps, to maintain the usual Sunday schedule, but that will not likely work well. Too many people have become accustomed to Christmas Mass on Christmas Eve rather than on the feast itself. Besides, the tradition of midnight Mass (or at least a Mass after dark on Christmas Eve) has a long history. Parishes should encourage people to consider ways of celebrating the Eucharist on the feast itself, but wise pastoral judgment will be required to anticipate how people will respond to such appeals. For New Year s Day, adjustments in the usual schedule may also make sense. Consider what time would work best for those who will be partying on the Eve. Some parishioners who do not spend the evening at parties might find a Mass at 11 p.m. a good way to bring in the new year. A very early Mass on Jan. 1 morning, on the other hand, may not draw many. When making such decisions, it is important to consult as widely as possible. Too often we make decisions based on hunches or the comments of a few people. Take time to query a variety of folks to get a better sense of how people would likely respond to different schedule possibilities. A Ritual Note: Next Sunday, as also on the Feast of the Annunciation, the rubrics call for all to genuflect at the part of the creed that speaks of the Incarnation. This is the place where we are supposed to bow every Sunday. Getting the assembly to do this well, however, is difficult. An announcement explaining the ritual gesture today, along with a simple reminder before the creed is proclaimed next week, might help. INTRODUCTION AND PENITENTIAL RITE Today is the beginning of the last week before Christmas. As we light the four candles on our Advent wreath, let us ask God to prepare our hearts and our homes, our communities and our world for his coming to live with us. (As the following is sung or spoken, the first candle is lit.) Lord Jesus, you the Son of God and the Son of Mary: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the King of Kings and the Prince of Peace: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, be born in us and in our waiting, needy world: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS 2 Sam 7:1-5,8b-12,14a,16 The promise to David, ancestor of Jesus. Rom 16:25-27 Christ is the manifestation of the mystery kept secret for long ages. Luke 1:26-38 Gabriel s announcement to Mary. PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Brothers and sisters, in union with Mary the Mother of God and with all the angels and saints, let us bring our prayers before God our heavenly Father. MINISTER During this holy season, believers all over the world are praying for peace. Let us join them and pray for peace among the nations and in all the troubled areas of the world for peace where there is violence and people live in fear for peace among neighbors within our families and communities for peace within our hearts we pray, Let us pray for our children for their safety and well-being for a happy Christmas with those who love them for confidence in all they do and hope for their future we pray, There are members of our community who are struggling with chronic illness or pain and have asked for our prayers let us remember (names) for them and for all those who love them and care for them we pray, We remember those who have died (names) for all those who have died this past year and for those mourning the loss of a loved one who find their loss especially difficult at Christmastime we pray, Good and gracious God, hear our prayers this day. As Mary said Yes to the Angel, help us to say Yes to your plan for us. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. 24 DECEMBER 2005

PREPARATION: PLANNING & PRAYERS December 25, 2005 Christmas Fr. Lawrence Mick Nativity of the Lord Paige Byrne Shortal Special Ritual Elements for Christmas: The celebration of the Nativity of the Lord offers a number of special ritual possibilities. Most parishes probably should not do all of them, but one or two can help to make the feast a special celebration. Some of these may already be customary at your parish. Blessing the manger scene, for example, has been a part of many parishes customs for generations. An order for such a blessing can be found in the Book of Blessings, beginning at # This blessing is intended to be used after the general intercessions and includes some petitions that can be part of those. If your parish is used to blessing the manger at the beginning of Mass, consider whether a shift is workable. If not, you will need to adapt the blessing. Note, by the way, the caution in # 1544 that the manger scene is not to be set up in the presbyterium, which we usually call the sanctuary. Local architecture may require some leniency with this rule, but the manger surely should not be under the altar itself. Another section of the Book of Blessings offers texts for blessing a Christmas tree (# 1570ff). This ritual is not designed for use within Mass, but you could perhaps use one of the blessing prayers at the beginning of Mass. This would only make real sense, however, if the décor in church has a single tree as a focal point. Blessing four trees that simply serve as a backdrop seems inappropriate. Maybe the best use for this blessing is in parishioners homes. A similar blessing is found in Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, p , followed by a blessing for a home manger scene. Another special ritual for this feast is the formal proclamation of the birth of the Savior. This may be found in the Sacramentary supplement, # 19. It is also usually published in the Sourcebook for Sundays and Seasons from Liturgy Training Publications ( ). This proclamation may be made as part of the entrance rites, after the greeting and introduction. The rubrics note that the Gloria follows, so it would replace the penitential rite. It may be chanted or proclaimed without singing by a deacon, cantor or reader. This is also a good day for a Gospel procession that is more elaborate than usual. Candles and incense can add solemnity, and the Gospel book could be carried through the assembly if the Gospel acclamation is long enough. Chanting the Gospel also adds solemnity if the deacon or priest is capable of it. INTRODUCTION It is Christmas. All the preparations the food, gifts, songs, Christmas greetings, even the parties get us ready for this day when we celebrate the mystery of divinity within a tiny child. This mystery moves little children and wise men and women. Let us remember. PENITENTIAL RITE Lord Jesus, you came as a baby humble, poor and defenseless: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are born into this world wherever you are received: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, help us welcome you so that we might be filled with new life: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS (Choice of four sets of readings.) PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL My friends, on this holy night (day) let us join with believers gathered in churches all over the world to pray for those we love and those we have never met and all those who need our prayers. MINISTER Let us pray for peace for the generosity of heart we know at Christmas to extend beyond this time to all times and to all peoples we pray, Let us pray for the church for the unity of Christians and a spirit of cooperation among members of all congregations for those called to leadership within the church and for those who do not have a place to worship where they feel welcome we pray, Let us remember the poor and pray for the success of all efforts to alleviate suffering for all who are seeking justice in public policy and for all who share their blessings with others we pray, Let us pray for those who are sick for those suffering a life-threatening illness and for those in chronic pain. We remember those who feel isolated from the community for the homebound or those in nursing homes for those who are dying with no one to care for them we pray, Let us ask God for what we need for Christmas if we are lonely if we long for past Christmases when we were children or when our children were little if the people we spend Christmas with are difficult if we are anxious or without enough money or enough time For what we need we pray, Good and gracious God, your Word becomes flesh in our midst. Give ear even to those needs we cannot express and help us to know of your presence in this holy season. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. DECEMBER
