6 preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS May 2, 2010 Coping with Change Fr. Lawrence Mick 5th Sunday of Easter Paige Byrne Shortal The magic word today is new. In the second reading, we hear of a new heaven, a new earth and a new Jerusalem. God says, I make all things new. And in the Gospel, Jesus gives us a new commandment. If God is making things new, then things have to change. Though change is difficult for most of us, it is an inevitable part of being alive. We only quit changing when we die (and maybe not even then. Remember purgatory). Of course, change can be for the better or for the worse, but not changing is not really an option. It may be helpful to remind parishioners of this occasionally, lest the temptation to become set in our ways overtakes the parish. It will be difficult to embrace the forthcoming changes in our worship patterns as a result of the new translation of the missal. Though there are some improvements in some texts, many will be very difficult to proclaim and even more difficult to understand. Nevertheless, change is coming, and we need to prepare our people as best we can. We have noted before that preparing them requires much more than dealing with changing texts. Most Catholics are still woefully undereducated about the liturgy and have not been given the help they need to benefit fully from the liturgical experience. Ongoing liturgical formation is always needed, but it is especially important now. In all of this, it is essential to remember why we gather for liturgy at all. Through the liturgy we praise God and share in the sacrifice of Christ. But liturgy does not exist for itself. We are called together by God in order to be strengthened by word and meal so that we can be sent forth to bring God s love to the world. Obviously, good liturgy can do this more effectively than poor liturgy, but the ultimate evaluation of our worship comes in its effects on our world. The first reading today recounts the missionary travels of Paul and Barnabas to a variety of places and reminds us that the word of God was being preached to the gentiles as well as the Jews. The Gospel insists that people will know us as disciples of Jesus by the way we love. Both texts could provide the basis for a homily that gives mystagogical catechesis on the dismissal rite of the Mass. Planners could also use these two texts from the readings in creating petitions that pray for effective mission when we leave the liturgy. Look for a good closing song that sends people forth to preach the word or build the kingdom of God. Introduction My friends, today we hear Jesus giving us a new commandment: We are to love one another. It is not the command to love that is new, but the definition of neighbor: those who are like us, those are not, those we find difficult to love and those for whom we have natural affection. All who are placed on our path are neighbors. As we remember that we were baptized to be followers of Jesus, let us pray for the heart of Jesus, that we may love everyone. We suggest that the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water replace the Penitential Rite and Kyrie during the Easter season. Scripture Readings Acts 14:21b-27 Paul and Barnabas establish churches among the gentiles. Rev 21:1-5a Behold, I make all things new. John 13:31-33a, I give you a new commandment: love one another. Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, it is both our duty and our privilege to pray for our world, for our neighbor and for those who most need our prayers. Let us pray. Minister We pray for the church. During this month of May, let us especially remember communities, works and projects dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God; for all believers who are inspired by Mary s Yes to God s plan we pray, For those who say Yes to the commandment to love one another: for pastors and parents; healers and homemakers; diplomats, social workers and all those who work for peace and justice we pray, For those who say Yes to young people: for counselors and coaches and teachers; for employers who are fair and inspiring to the young; and for young people who are graduating this year we pray, May is National Mental Health Month. Let us pray for all those living with depression, schizophrenia, anxiety and other illnesses that affect the person s ability to cope with day-to-day life; for their family and friends who witness their suffering; for a society that promotes the emotional well-being of each person we pray, We remember those who have died (names). And for those who are grieving and find the spring an especially difficult time to be without their dear ones we pray, Presider O God, hear the prayers of your people that we may be inspired to love as you love us. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. May

7 preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS May 9, 2010 Which Readings? Fr. Lawrence Mick 6th Sunday of Easter Paige Byrne Shortal In those dioceses that celebrate Ascension next Sunday, there is a choice for today s readings. You may use the second reading and/or the Gospel from the Seventh Sunday of Easter in place of those assigned today. How do you make these choices? Why would you choose one set of readings over the other? The first reading assigned to the Seventh Sunday recounts the stoning of Stephen, which people no longer hear wherever Ascension displaces that Sunday. But that reading may not be used today, presumably because it occurs after the Ascension in Acts. The second reading on both Sundays is taken from Revelation. The text assigned to the Sixth Sunday describes a vision of the heavenly Jerusalem, while the one for the Seventh Sunday brings us to the end of Revelation, with a strong eschatological note. The Gospel for the Sixth Sunday speaks of the coming of the Holy Spirit, pointing us to Pentecost, while the text for the Seventh Sunday focuses on the unity the Spirit fosters, without actually mentioning the Holy Spirit. One argument for choosing the readings from the Seventh Sunday is that people will never hear them if we don t choose them once in a while. Perhaps planners should keep a little chart and use the readings from the Sixth Sunday for three years (they are different in each Lectionary 20 May 2010 cycle) and then use the ones from the Seventh Sunday for three years. On the other hand, making the substitution requires notifying all the lectors, musicians and presiders involved. That in itself is not a major hurdle, but planners might wonder if the readings involved are worth the effort. Ultimately, this is a decision that must be made in consultation with the preachers. The most important thing is to decide early enough so that all can prepare accordingly. Mother s Day: Today is Mother s Day in the United States and Canada and several other countries. Though nothing in today s readings links specifically to mothers, it is always appropriate to remember mothers in the petitions and to offer a special blessing on this civil holiday. The Book of Blessings has special petitions and a Prayer Over the People for mothers at # Creative planners might develop a fuller prayer than this. An example can be found in Fr. Edward Hays book Prayers for the Domestic Church on Page 80. That prayer is cast in the singular, so it would have to be adapted for communal use. You might also provide a prayer in the bulletin for use at home. Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers has a singular form of the Prayer Over the People from the Book of Blessings on Page 173 (or 197 in the earlier edition). Introduction In today s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that he will not leave us alone, that he will send the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us. In the first reading we hear about one of the first dissensions in the early church, a controversy that threatened to pull apart this young community. Instead, they held a council, prayed to the Holy Spirit and resolved their differences. Let us pray for such wisdom today. As we remember our baptism, let us also remember our confirmation and pray again for the activity of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We suggest that the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water replace the Penitential Rite and Kyrie during the Easter season. Scripture Readings Acts 15:1-2, Dissension in the early church, resolved in the Spirit Rev 21:10-14, The holy city with the glory of God as its light John 14:23-29 The Holy Spirit will teach you. Note: When the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated next Sunday, the second reading and Gospel from the Seventh Sunday of Easter may be read today. Prayers of the Faithful Presider Confident in the promise of our risen Lord, let us pray for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and the hearts of all men and women. Minister For peace in all the troubled areas of the world; for peace within families and communities; for the peace that Jesus promised we pray, For the church: for the guidance, inspiration and comfort of the Holy Spirit in all that we do or say we pray, For those with Gospel privileges: the poor; the sick; widows, widowers and orphans; the homeless, refugees and all whose lives are imperiled we pray, For our families. On this Mother s Day we pray especially for mothers and stepmothers; grandmothers and godmothers; for all women who nurture, support and love their families we pray, For the sick: for those who live with chronic pain or fatigue; for those who struggle with emotional illness; and for those who care for them we pray, We remember those who have died (names). And for those who mourn the loss of a dear one we pray, Presider Creator God, hear the prayers of your people this day. Help us to know your Son, Jesus; to do as he would do; to be like him; to preach his Gospel and to live our lives faithful to all of his commands. We pray always in Jesus name. Amen.

8 preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS May 16, 2010 Being the Body of Christ Fr. Lawrence Mick Ascension of the Lord Paige Byrne Shortal If you are celebrating the Solemnity of the Ascension today, you must make a choice about the second reading. You may use the text from Hebrews, which is the one for Cycle C, but you may also use the text from Ephesians, which is drawn from Cycle A. One might argue for the Hebrews text just for variety (see last week s column on choosing readings), but the Ephesians reading offers a key line that could be the basis of some important mystagogical catechesis today. At the end of the passage, Paul speaks of the church as the body of Christ, with Christ himself as its head. This is a fundamental image for our understanding of what we are doing at worship. We form the body of Christ, since we became members of that body at baptism. The newly baptized may need to grow in their awareness that they have not just joined a group of people but have become members of a body that draws life from the Spirit. The rest of the assembly may need to deepen their awareness of this, as well, since our culture makes it difficult for us to recognize the bonds that link us to all the other members of the body. Our awareness that we form one body is essential for our liturgy because the worship we offer is the prayer of Christ himself. It is his sacrifice that we are invited to share, as he unites his will eternally to the Father. We can share this only as members of his body, in union with Christ, our head. Liturgy is not the private prayer of many people in one place but one prayer that is offered by all those who form Christ s body. How do you think most of your parishioners would respond if you told them that they cannot participate in the Mass unless they acknowledge their intimate connections with all the other members of the body? Would they say, Well, of course. We know that! or would they insist you were out of your mind? How you answer that question might go a long way toward discerning what kind of catechesis is needed for your parish. If you are celebrating the Seventh Sunday of Easter today, you can still focus on this fundamental truth. The Gospel passage from John is filled with language of unity, with Jesus comparing the unity of his disciples to his own union with the Father. This beautiful passage places eloquently before us the challenge of responding to Christ s prayer by embracing our unity in him. The period between Ascension and Pentecost is an appropriate time to remember that Christ continues his presence in the world through us. Introduction Today we remember the Ascension of our Lord into heaven. Jesus left the disciples, promising to send the Holy Spirit as guide and comforter. The disciples were understandably confused, anxious, even grieving. We know the end of the story, and yet we too are often confused, anxious and grieving. We renew our faith again in the promises of Jesus. We are not left alone in this world. We are baptized into a community of faith with Jesus as the head and the Holy Spirit as our guide. We suggest that the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water replace the Penitential Rite and Kyrie during the Easter season. Scripture Readings Acts 1:1-11 Jesus was lifted up. Eph 1:17-23 May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened. Luke 24:46-53 Behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, on this feast of the Ascension let us remember the promise of Jesus to send the Holy Spirit and pray to be open to the Spirit s action in our lives. Minister Jesus commanded us to preach the Gospel: for the courage to witness to the Gospel by our words and by the way we live we pray, Jesus commanded us to baptize in his name: for faithfulness in living out the promises of our own baptism and for the grace to raise our children in the faith we pray, Jesus commanded us to receive the Holy Spirit: for hearts and minds open to the Spirit s promptings we pray, Jesus commanded us to love one another: for the grace to choose the loving thing we pray, Jesus commanded us to pray for what we need: for the poor, the sick, the burdened; for those in the path of war and all those whose lives are threatened; for those who most need our prayers this day we pray, Presider Creator God, hear the prayers of your people this day. Help us to know your Son, Jesus; to do as he would do; to be like him; to preach his Gospel and to live our lives faithful to all of his commands. We pray always in Jesus name. Amen. 9 preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS May 23, 2010 Choices, Choices, Choices Fr. Lawrence Mick Pentecost Paige Byrne Shortal The Solemnity of Pentecost marks the end of the Easter season. There are a number of choices that planners need to make for Pentecost. The first involves any Saturday afternoon or evening Masses for the feast. The Sacramentary and Lectionary provide texts for a Vigil Mass. Many parishes ignore these and use the readings for Sunday morning, which seems a reasonable pastoral decision since few people come for both the vigil and the feast. If you do choose to use the vigil texts, you have four options for the first reading. All of these might be used if your parish wants to plan an extended vigil, somewhat like the Easter Vigil. This might be a way to help the newly baptized complete this Easter season of mystagogy. An evening vigil Mass using the four readings and psalms (along with the Romans reading and Gospel) could provide a welcome time for reflection and prayer for the new members and their sponsors and the catechumenate team. Other parishioners should be invited to join in the vigil, too, of course. Pentecost Sunday itself has options for the second reading and the Gospel. There are texts assigned to Cycle C (Romans and John 14), but you can also use those from Cycle A (1 Corinthians and John 20). Each of these readings has its own value, so planners and preachers should discern which ones would be most helpful to the local assembly or to the preacher s focus. Be sure that the lectors and musicians are notified about which texts to prepare. The sequence for Pentecost is one of the two each year (the other is Easter) that is required. The sequences developed as meditations on the Alleluia verse, adding words to the multiple notes that were sung on each syllable of the Alleluia. Though they are a separate element today, they share the tone and purpose of the Gospel acclamation, allowing the assembly to express its joy at the good news of the feast. Sequences don t work well as recited texts, so work with your musicians to find a singable setting that the assembly can embrace. Many hymnals have a setting of the sequence either in chant form or in a hymn text. If yours does not, find one in another source, get permission to make copies, put them in the pews this weekend and save them from year to year. Since today ends the season of initiation, remember to acknowledge all those who have celebrated initiation sacraments since Easter: neophytes, first communicants, infants baptized and children or adults confirmed. If you don t have a joyful reception for them after your Masses, at least include them in the general intercessions this weekend. Introduction My brothers and sisters in Christ, today is Pentecost a word that means Fiftieth Day the last day of Easter. This is the day we remember and celebrate the promise of the risen Jesus to send us the Holy Spirit. Let us together claim this promise and ask for the Holy Spirit to inspire, strengthen and heal our community and our world. We suggest that the Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water replace the Penitential Rite and Kyrie during the Easter season. Scripture Readings Acts 2:1-11 All are filled with the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor 12:3b-7, Many gifts, one Spirit; many parts, one body John 20:19-23 Jesus said, Peace and Receive the Holy Spirit. Note other options for readings. Prayers of the Faithful Presider My friends, confident in the promise of our risen Lord, let us pray for the grace of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Minister We pray for peace. That the Holy Spirit may inspire those seeking nonviolent solutions to conflicts among peoples. For those who work as diplomats, mediators and ambassadors for peace we pray, We pray for the church. That the Holy Spirit may guide those called to leadership within the church; for bishops and pastors; counselors and confessors; teachers and catechists; ministers of worship and ministers to the poor we pray, We pray for those working for a better world. That the Holy Spirit may encourage people with visions of a society that is safe for all, just for all, nurturing for all we pray, We pray for those who most need our prayers. That the Holy Spirit may comfort the sick, calm the anxious, strengthen the weary and gladden those who are grieving we pray, Let us pray quietly for a moment for the grace of the Holy Spirit in our lives where we are most in need (significant pause) for all that we need to become the holy men and women God calls us to be we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, send your Holy Spirit into our hearts and into our world. Make us your people and make this world your sanctuary. Bring us all to your kingdom, won by your Son, our risen Lord Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen. 22 May 2010

10 preparation: PLANNING & PRAYERS May 30, 2010 Father, Son, Spirit Fr. Lawrence Mick The Most Holy Trinity Paige Byrne Shortal Today s celebration of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity offers an opportunity for mystagogical catechesis on the normal pattern of liturgical prayer. This is something the average Catholic may never even have considered, but it offers a helpful balance to many people s personal prayer. When they address God, most Catholics, I suspect, direct most of their personal prayers to Jesus. Less often do they turn directly to the Father, and except maybe for Pentecostals, even less often do they speak to the Holy Spirit. This is not surprising. Jesus came to reveal God s face to us, so we naturally turn to him most easily. The image of the Father may seem a bit more distant, but it is at least easier to envision than the Spirit. There is nothing wrong with such prayer preferences. Nevertheless, it can be helpful for people to realize the pattern of prayer in the liturgy, and that realization might even lead them to address their private prayer in the same manner at times. Jesus, of course, did not pray to himself. He addressed prayer to his heavenly Father. Since the liturgy is Christ s prayer in which we share, it makes sense that the prayers of the liturgy are generally addressed to the Father, too. There are some exceptions, like the prayer for peace that leads into the sign of peace, which is addressed to Christ, but most liturgical prayer is directed to the Father. This prayer is offered by Christ, and so our prayers are offered through Christ to the Father. And we offer our prayers as part of Christ s body, whose unity is sustained by the Holy Spirit. Hence the traditional formula for liturgical prayer is to the Father, through the Son and in the unity of the Holy Spirit. This formulation could easily be the basis of the homily today, and it could also shape the petitions for the general intercessions. Note that these petitions are also addressed to the Father, but their content can focus on the role of the three Persons of the Trinity. Pray that we might be confident in addressing our prayer to the Father, who loves us. Pray that we might unite our prayers with the eternal sacrifice of Christ. Pray that we might live in the Spirit, who unites us in one body. Today s first reading, recounting the role of Wisdom in the creation of the universe, might also prompt at least a petition or two for the proper use of creation and for the future of our planet. As Pope Benedict reminded us last year in his encyclical Caritas in Veritate, The environment is God s gift to everyone, and in our use of it we have a responsibility toward the poor, toward future generations and toward humanity as a whole (#48). Introduction We acknowledge the mystery of the Trinity every time we make the sign of the cross. Today, let us consider what this mystery means to us as believers in a complex world, with our many tasks, duties, struggles and relationships. Let us pray to our Creator Father, the Redeemer Son and Brother, and the Holy Spirit. Penitential Rite Lord Jesus, you are Son of the Father and the Word of Creation: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are Brother and Savior: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you send us the Spirit, that we may know and follow you: Lord, have mercy. Scripture Readings Prov 8:22-31 Wisdom was with God before all else. Rom 5:1-5 To God, through Christ, in love poured out through the Holy Spirit John 16:12-15 What the Father has given me, the Spirit will give you. Prayers of the Faithful Presider This feast of the Holy Trinity reminds us that God created us to live in harmony with one another. Let us pray for peace. Minister For peace among the nations: for an appreciation of our one world, our one identity as humankind, our one God who created us all we pray, For peace among the religions: for respect for what we don t understand and for delight in our diversity we pray, For peace among those striving to do good: for the recognition of multiple approaches to society s problems we pray, For peace within families and communities: for the triumph of sacrifice over selfishness we pray, For those who cannot be with us today: for the sick, the elderly, those who must work at this time and all who may feel isolated from the community we pray, We remember those who have died (names). And on this Memorial Day weekend, let us remember all those who have died in service to our country and those who mourn their passing. For all victims of war we pray, Presider Creator God, you who formed us and made us and know the thoughts and motives of our hearts, mercifully fill your people with the spirit of your unity, that we may cast aside our differences and serve you in all that we do. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. May
