PREPARATION: PLANNING & PRAYERS June 1, 2014 Ascension Today? Fr. Lawrence Mick 7th Sunday of Easter Paige Byrne Shortal For most of the United States and Canada, this Sunday is the Solemnity of the Ascension. If your diocese still celebrates Ascension on Thursday, these notes can be applied to that date. A focus for mystagogy on this feast might link baptism and mission. The Gospel contains what is called the great commission, when the risen Lord charges his disciples with the task of preaching the good news and making disciples of all the nations. That command remains unfulfilled in many ways even two millennia later. Part of the challenge for the newly baptized is to move beyond the comfortable embrace of the catechumenal group to accept responsibility for carrying on the mission of the church. This is a major step for many, who have seen baptism as a personal gift but need to grow into their role as full members of the church, carrying on Christ s work. Of course, this growth is more likely if the local community into which they have been initiated has a strong sense of mission. Many long-baptized parishioners may still need to take that step of accepting responsibility for the mission. This is a good feast to celebrate our common call to proclaim the good news and lead others to Christ. Musicians might look for songs that express the great commission. There is a hymn called Lord, You Give the Great Commission, but many other songs that speak of proclaiming the Gospel would also be appropriate. The point of the Ascension is not that Jesus is gone. At the end of today s Gospel passage, Jesus insists, I am with you always, until the end of the age. The point of the feast is that he is now present among us and through us. It is our task to make his presence known and felt today. Petitions for the intercessions might focus on ways we can do this, praying for the wisdom and courage to do it well. Pope Francis has continued and even heightened his predecessors call for evangelization. It is a longterm project to form our people to reach out to others and invite them to faith and church. Planners and preachers should be thinking about this challenge throughout the year. A good place to start would be to read and discuss together Pope Francis exhortation The Joy of the Gospel. It s not short, but it s much more readable than many church documents. You can find the text by clicking on Apostolic Exhortations at holy_father/francesco, or you can order printed copies from Amazon or other bookstores. As you read and discuss, take notes on passages that strike you and keep them handy for preaching, for composing petitions and for printing periodically in the bulletin. INTRODUCTION There s an old saying: Be careful what you ask for. Are we sure we want the powerful force of God s Spirit directing and guiding us? And yet if we re not attuned to the Holy Spirit, we are at risk for the influence of an un-holy spirit. There are many such influences in our world, and if we want to abide safely in the arms of God, then we must dare to pray Come, Holy Spirit. PENITENTIAL ACT Lord Jesus, you promised to not leave us orphans: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you promised to be with always: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you promised to send the Holy Spirit as our comforter and guide: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS Acts 1:12:14 The disciples devoted themselves to prayer. Psalm 27:1, 4, 7-8 I believe I shall see the Lord in the land of the living. 1 Pet 4:13-16 You are blessed to suffer for Christ. John 17:1-11a Jesus prays for his disciples. Note: The Solemnity of the Ascension is celebrated today in many dioceses. Find Ascension prayers online. PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL Presider My friends, let us pray for hearts and minds open to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in our church, in our communities, in our families and in ourselves. Minister For the church: for inspired pastors, preachers, musicians and all leaders of worship; for catechists, confessors and counselors; for parents, grandparents and all who are charged with the care and formation of young people we pray, For civil society: for inspired leaders of government at every level; for lawmakers and those whose work it is to interpret and enforce the law; for those charged with keeping the peace we pray, For families and religious communities: for the inspiration to forgive old hurts; to welcome stranger and friend into our midst; to enjoy time together we pray, For our daily work: for energy for the most tedious tasks; for enthusiasm for efforts that contribute to the well-being of others; for the grace to rest, trusting that God will supply what we cannot we pray, We remember those who have died... (names). For the inspiration to turn our grieving into service of others who are living with loss... we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, hear the prayers of your people this day. Send the Holy Spirit to inspire and strengthen us this week as we strive to live according to your Gospel. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. JUNE

PREPARATION: PLANNING & PRAYERS June 8, 2014 Celebrating the Spirit Fr. Lawrence Mick Pentecost Paige Byrne Shortal Today is Pentecost, the final day of Easter. Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. At least, that s what we claim to be doing. But I wonder sometimes if we just acknowledge the gift of the Spirit and observe Pentecost rather than really celebrate it. To really celebrate the gift of the Spirit requires being aware of the value of that gift in our lives and being grateful for it. For many Catholics, I m afraid, the Spirit is more theory than experience. That doesn t mean that they have not received the Spirit. If they are baptized, they have been given that gift. Nor does it mean that they are not responding to the promptings of the Spirit in their hearts. Many give generously of themselves for the sake of others, a good sign of the Spirit s presence in them. Often, however, these same believers do not associate their actions or their personal spirituality with the work of the Holy Spirit. Planners might consider ways to help parishioners recognize and rejoice in the action of God s Spirit in their midst and in their lives. Good preaching is one important means of doing that, of course. But can you think of other ways to highlight the Spirit s presence in your own community? Could you invite several parishioners to share their own experience of the Spirit in their lives, perhaps after Communion today? Could such testimonials 20 JUNE 2014 be printed in the bulletin? Could planners themselves surface examples of the Spirit s action in the parish and highlight them with posters at the entrances? Can you compose petitions that pray for continued responsiveness to the Spirit s promptings in these areas? There are some ritual decisions to make today, too. If you have a Mass on Saturday, you need to decide if you are using the texts for the Vigil Mass or not. While they are certainly intended for Masses on the eve of the feast, check with preachers to make sure they are OK with different texts for different Masses. Most will not want to prepare two different homilies for the weekend. Whatever is decided should be communicated well in advance to lectors and musicians. The sequence today is one of two that is required; the other is on Easter Sunday. Musicians should determine what setting can be effective and include the assembly in the singing. Don t forget the double Alleluia that is to be added to the dismissal today. It s a strong reminder that we are concluding Easter this weekend. The final song might also express Easter joy one more time. Décor today should still speak of Easter, too, though it is certainly appropriate to add some red banners or flowers to the mix. INTRODUCTION Today we hear the words of the risen Jesus to his disciples: Receive the Holy Spirit. Jesus speaks these words to us, too. Let us pray today for the grace to accept the gifts of the Holy Spirit we were promised when we received the sacrament of confirmation: wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and wonder and awe. Let us pray. PENITENTIAL ACT Lord Jesus, you promised to be with us always: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you promised to guide and protect us on the way: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you promised the gift of your Holy Spirit: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS Acts 2:1-11 They were filled with the Holy Spirit and understood each other. Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-31, 34 Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the earth. 1 Cor 12:3b-7, To each the Spirit is given for some benefit. John 20:19-23 Jesus breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL Presider Let us pray for minds and hearts open to inspiration so that we may continue the work Jesus came to do. Let us pray, Come, Holy Spirit. Minister That bishops and pastors, deacons and ministers, catechists and confessors and all who call themselves Christian may inspire others to come to know Jesus, we pray Come, Holy Spirit. So that we may know what is good, speak about the good, and do what is good each day, we pray Come, Holy Spirit. So that we may create families and communities where Jesus would feel welcome, we pray Come, Holy Spirit. So that we may notice the suffering of others and be a source of comfort, we pray Come, Holy Spirit. So that those who have endured painful losses may remember the Lord who loves them, we pray Come, Holy Spirit. For those who have died (names).and that those who are dying may hope in the Lord, we pray Come, Holy Spirit. Presider Good and gracious God, hear our prayers this day for your Holy Spirit s activity in our lives. Strengthen us. Encourage us. Guide us on our journey to the kingdom. We pray always in the name of Jesus, our risen Lord. Amen.

PREPARATION: PLANNING & PRAYERS June 15, 2014 Appreciating Trinity Fr. Lawrence Mick The Most Holy Trinity Paige Byrne Shortal Today is the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, but that will not be obvious to most parishioners because the Sunday texts are displaced by the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. The Easter décor is gone, but the vestments are still white today. The weekday texts for this week will be from the Eleventh Week. Texts for Trinity Sunday are found in the Sacramentary after the Thirty-Fourth Week of Ordinary Time and in the Lectionary after the Alleluia verses for Sundays in Ordinary Time. Make sure to mark the pages in both books before the first Mass this weekend. Remember to mark the right page in the Gospel book, too, if you use one. This is also Father s Day in both the United States and Canada, as well as in 50 other countries around the world. Whatever you did to recognize mothers last month should be echoed for fathers today. Today s first reading describes Moses encounter with the divine presence on Mount Sinai. It might stand as a healthy reminder to us that when we gather for worship, we are entering into a special arena for such an encounter. While our style of worship should always be fully human, it should not become casual. We are engaged in an important meeting that requires our attention as well as our humility before God. This also reminds us that our belief in the Trinity is not a theological abstraction but a response to the way that people have encountered the divine through history. It was the experience of God as somehow threefold that led to the doctrine of the three persons in one God. Our interaction with the Trinity might be summed up in a line from our second reading today. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. This line forms the basis of one of the greetings at the beginning of Mass, though the missal translation replaces fellowship with communion, which is less gender-specific and reminds us of the link between the Spirit and the communion we share in the Eucharist. Planners and preachers might ask themselves how they experience this love, grace and communion. Then use those insights to craft the homily and the petitions today. You might pray, for example, for deeper awareness of God s love and the courage to share that love with those in need. You could pray for a deeper sense of gratitude for the many ways that we have been graced (gifted) through Jesus Christ. And you can certainly pray for a stronger awareness of our communion with one another, fostered and sustained by the presence of the Holy Spirit within each of us and in our community of faith. INTRODUCTION Jesus came to reveal to us the true nature of God God who is present, God who is love, God who is, by nature, a community. We are created in the image of God, and so we, too, are created to be a community, one with each other in love and joy. Let us pray to be that community, that face of God in this world. PENITENTIAL ACT Lord Jesus, you came to reveal the face of our Creator God: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are God s Word and God s Promise: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you promised us the gift of your Spirit: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS Exod 34:4b-6, 8-9 God is merciful and gracious. Daniel 3:52-55 Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our ancestors! 2 Cor 13:11-13 Paul greets the church in the name of the Trinity. John 3:16-18 God sent the Son to save the world. PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL Presider Brothers and sisters, let us pray for the grace to be a community of faith, hope and love as we celebrate the Trinity of three Persons that is our God. Minister For the church: for all Christians of every congregation and language, every nation and race, that we may together be a sign of the diversity and the unity of God we pray, For all leaders of the church: for bishops and pastors, ministers of worship and ministers to the poor, catechists, counselors and confessors, that they may inspire all to service, worship and holiness we pray, For those who are suffering and those who serve them: for the courage to share in the sufferings of others so that together we will be be raised up whole and holy we pray, On this Father s Day, we pray for fathers and stepfathers; grandfathers and godfathers; and all men who serve young people as coaches and teachers, priests and counselors for strength and tenderness, courage and wisdom, generosity and faithfulness we pray, We remember those who have died (names). For all who are mourning the loss of someone, especially those who mourn for their fathers, and those fathers who are mourning the loss of a child we pray, Presider Creator God, Holy Trinity of Persons, hear our prayers and abide with us so that we may make a life and a world that glorifies you Father, Son and Holy Spirit now and always and forever and ever. Amen. JUNE

PREPARATION: PLANNING & PRAYERS June 22, 2014 The Body and the Blood Fr. Lawrence Mick Eucharist Paige Byrne Shortal Today s solemnity again displaces the texts for the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time. You will find the texts for the solemnity just after the ones for Holy Trinity (see last week s column). There is a sequence available for this solemnity, but it is optional and it is long, and the lack of good musical settings means that it is seldom used. There is an option to use the final part of the sequence, which is sometimes titled Ecce Panis Angelorum ( Behold the Bread of Angels ). This is a piece sometimes used for Benediction, and it reflects the limited view of Eucharist in the medieval period when it was composed. Notice that there is no mention of the blood of Christ in this portion, though the full sequence is more balanced. When the sequence was composed, it was for the feast titled Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ). After the Second Vatican Council, the title of the feast was changed to The Body and Blood of Christ, in line with the restoration of Communion under both species. There is still a problem, though, if we focus on the elements as sacred objects apart from their use in the celebration of the Mass. The Eucharist is, first and foremost, an activity that we do, not a thing that we adore. Many Catholics have still not made the shift to this active understanding of Eucharist but are stuck with a static view. 22 JUNE 2014 Adoration of the Eucharist has its place, as a way of reflecting on the meaning of the meal when we are not actually celebrating the Mass. During Mass, however, the focus should be on what we are doing sharing the body and blood of the Lord in Communion. It is the sharing that is primary; the elements are a means to nourish and deepen our communion with one another in Christ. So let the preaching and prayers today focus on what we do, in remembrance of him. One practice that hinders proper understanding of the Mass is regularly distributing bread from the tabernacle. The sacrament is reserved for taking Communion to the sick and the dying. It is not intended to be used during Mass. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says, It is most desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is bound to do, receive the Lord s Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass and that, in the instances when it is permitted, they partake of the chalice, so that even by means of the signs Communion will stand out more clearly as a participation in the sacrifice actually being celebrated (#85). INTRODUCTION Brothers and sisters, today we celebrate in a special way the gift of the Eucharist: the gift of Jesus present in bread and wine; the gift of Jesus present in word and sacrament; the gift of Jesus present in our midst. As one body in Christ, let us pray. PENITENTIAL ACT Lord Jesus, you are food for the journey: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you are nourishment for the hungry: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are refreshment for the weary: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS Deut 8:2-3, 14b-16a God fed them manna in the desert. Psalm 147:12-15, Praise the Lord, Jerusalem! 1 Cor 10:16-17 We, though many, are one and partake of one bread. John 6:51-58 I am the living bread from heaven. PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL Presider Let us join with those throughout the world who are praying this day for a world where the gifts of God are received with gratitude and the abundance of God is recognized and shared. Let us pray. Minister For Christian communities everywhere: for joyful sharing of the riches of the church wisdom, beauty, tradition, Gospel and the presence of Jesus we pray, For those who hunger for the Eucharist: for those faithful members of our community who are not Catholic and who accompany their families to worship; for those who are in the annulment process; for all those who long for Communion we pray, For those who have not received an adequate share of life s blessings: for those without access to nourishing food, clean water, safe shelter, medical care; for those without hope for their future we pray, For those who produce the food we eat: for safe and wholesome practices that avoid cruelty to humans and to animals; for farmers and gardeners and cooks; for those who work in the food industry and those who serve in restaurants; for those who staff food pantries and those who share their food with others we pray, We remember those who have died... (names). For those of our parish who are no longer with us at the table of the Lord, and for those who long for a loved one who once shared their table we pray, Presider Loving and generous God, hear our prayers, feed your people and teach us to share our food with others. We ask this through Jesus, who is our Bread of Life and Lord forever and ever. Amen.

PREPARATION: PLANNING & PRAYERS June 29, 2014 Peter and Paul, Apostles Fr. Lawrence Mick Saints Peter and Paul Paige Byrne Shortal Ordinary Time gets no respect! Again today, the Thirteenth Sunday is displaced by the celebration of two of our most important saints. If you are changing colors to match feasts and seasons, you have been shifting from green during the week to white on Sundays for three weeks now. Readings for the feast are found under the date in the back of the Sunday Lectionary (# ), and prayer texts are in the missal under June 29. Note that there are Vigil texts available; check with the preachers to decide whether to use them on Saturday. Make sure the lectors and other ministers are aware of what to prepare. The last time this feast was celebrated on Sunday was in It is unusual for a saint s feast to be celebrated on Sunday. Most of the solemnities that displace Sunday celebrations are those of Christ or Mary. This is a big shift from our experience before Vatican II, when saints feasts frequently eclipsed the Sunday celebration. This was so pronounced that the reforms after the council sought to restore the seasons of the church year by restricting the number of feasts that would interrupt the temporal cycle. This is clearly a good change, but it has the unfortunate effect of diminishing Catholics awareness of the saints. We all need heroes to follow; people today too often focus on sports or entertainment figures as role models, when the saints usually offer a much better example. Planners might discuss how more attention could be given to the saints in the course of the year. Almost every week has feasts or memorials of the saints that are celebrated on weekdays. Would it be helpful to parishioners to list those feast days in the bulletin? Could you make available for sale some contemporary books on the saints? Could you include a short biography of a saint each week in the bulletin, perhaps with the opening prayer from the Mass for that feast? Do you have statues or pictures or icons of any saints that could be highlighted on the Sunday before their feasts? This could be done by placing the image in a central place in the vestibule, or if it is not a moveable image (e.g. stained glass), extra lighting or drapery or an announcement could call attention to it. The announcements at the end of Mass could also note the coming feast and invite parishioners to celebrate the saint by coming to Mass that day or by praying together at home. Planners might also consult with the religious education leaders in the parish to see how the saints are introduced to students. Lifting up the saints for the assembly could become a joint project of the two groups. INTRODUCTION Today we celebrate two of our great ancestors in the faith: St. Peter and St. Paul. They had different gifts, temperaments and backgrounds, but they shared a passionate dedication to Jesus and the Gospel. May they serve as models for all of us as we continue to listen for God s voice and seek to answer God s call. PENITENTIAL ACT Lord Jesus, you are the Lord of all time and all places: Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you came to win salvation for all peoples: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you send us saints to inspire us to grow in holiness: Lord, have mercy. SCRIPTURE READINGS Acts 12:1-11 Peter, imprisoned for the Lord, is released by an angel. Psalm 34:2-9 The angel of the Lord rescues those who fear God. 2 Tim 4:6-8, Paul is strengthened in trial. Matt 16:13-19 Jesus chooses Simon Peter, the Rock. PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL Presider On this solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul, let us pray for all who are called to leadership and for those whose lives are affected by their decisions. Minister For the leaders of the church: for bishops and pastors and all those who are responsible for the care of souls; for the courage to preach the good news, to inspire faith in others and to witness to the love of God for every human being we pray, For the leaders of nations: for those who are charged with the responsibility of keeping the peace, protecting the vulnerable and ensuring access to the necessities of life for every person we pray, For leaders in business and the media: for those whose decisions affect the lives of many people; for those with influence to do great good or great harm we pray, For leaders in education and health care: for dedication to service and commitment to those who are most in need we pray, For the sick, the suffering and all those who most need our prayers we pray, For those who have died (names). And for those who are mourning the loss of someone dear to them we pray, Presider Good and gracious God, hear the prayers of your people this day. May we learn from the example of your saints to seek you above all things and to live in this world as your new creation. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. JUNE
