About once a month or so the Altar Society will post some insightful information about what we are currently doing or what is new. To kick off the New Year, the Altar Society would like to thank you for your donations last month. Those donations are put to good use with flowers on the altar, but much more! Your donations also support replacing the linens, altar cloths, and vestments, as well as cleaning, polishing and maintaining our silver crucifix, candlesticks, sanctuary light, and containers. There are many who donate their time and talents to the Altar Society. There is a floral group that alternates each week to clear and arrange the flowers; a group that clean the linens; polishers to maintain the silver; those who replenish votive candles; and cleaning of the Holy water fonts too! We are always in need of additional people to join us in our work. Both men and women are important to our work, especially during our biggest holy days! The best time to train and join us is before our biggest load of work, like now! If you would like to join our Altar Society we would like to find the perfect niche for you. No job is too small or insignificant; to do small things with great love for our Lord. If you would like to consider joining the altar society please call: Linda Potter at 650/ WALK FOR LIFE BUS Please join us for the 9th annual Walk for Life West Coast on Saturday, 26 January This annual tradition is the opportunity for us all to hit the streets and witness to the sanctity of life in the womb. If you would like to join us on the bus, please contact Mary Ellen Peloso at 650/ Space is limited. He will show how it tells the entire story of salvation, how our happiness is God s goal, what God s innermost secret is, the role angels play in aiding us, and how it is a road map for our faith journey. The classes will be held on Tuesday mornings at 09:30 AM and repeated again in the evening at 07:00 PM. It runs for 12 weeks, ending on 07 May 2013 (two weeks off for Holy Week and Easter). RESTORATION OF SILVER CANDLESTICKS AND CRUCIFIX The beautiful set of antique silver candlesticks and crucifix, which is one of the greatest treasures of Nativity Church, is in need of repair and restoration. Some of the candlesticks and the crucifix were damaged in the 1989 earthquake. There was some repair work done which did not completely address the problems, nor deal with dents and internal supports. We have contacted a respected silversmith in San Francisco who will undertake a complete restoration. The cost per candlestick and crucifix is $1,300. If you are interested in sponsoring one of them, please contact Msgr. Otellini. JEAN BONE AND ADRIAN WARD BEQUESTS Nativity is the recipient of two very generous bequests from the estates of Jean Bone and Adrian Ward, brother and sister, longtime parishioners. Please remember them in your kindness. The money will be directed to the school. Remembering the parish in your will is a wonderful way of prolonging one s generosity, and assuring the ongoing financial stability and growth of the parish. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Msgr. Otellini. 5 From the Holy See THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS Each month His Holiness Benedict XVI asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For January 2013, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: General: That during this Year of Faith Christians may deepen their knowledge of the mystery of Christ and joyfully bear witness to the gift of faith in Him. Missionary: That the Christian communities of the Middle East, which frequently suffer discrimination, may receive the strength of fidelity and perseverance of the Holy Spirit. 6 THE USE OF THE PALLIUM Among the liturgical insignia of the Supreme Pontiff, one of the most evocative is the pallium made of white wool (from lambs shorn on the Feast of Saint Agnes), symbol of the bishop as the good shepherd and, at the same time, of the Lamb Crucified for the salvation of the human race. As Pope Benedict XVI made reference to it in his homily for the Holy Mass inaugurating his Petrine ministry on 24 April 2005: The symbolism of the pallium is even more concrete: the lamb s wool is meant to represent the lost, sick or weak sheep which the shepherd places on his shoulders and carries to the waters of life.? Young Believers Horse? WHAT Horse? Although many stories and depictions in art of St. Paul s conversion show him falling from a horse, the Bible in fact never mentions that Saul was riding or fell from any animal, only that he fell to the ground. (Acts 9: 3-4) The pallium is the symbol of a special relationship with the Pope and expresses besides the power, that, in communion with the Church of Rome, the metropolitan acquires by right in his own jurisdiction. According to Canon Law (canon 437), a metropolitan (archbishop) must request the pallium within three months of his appointment and may wear it only in the territory of his own diocese and in the other dioceses of his ecclesiastical province. The liturgical pallium in the most ancient depictions appears in the form of an open scarf placed over the shoulders. In this form we see it in the figure of Archbishop Maximian ( ) in the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna (which dates to the first half of the sixth century). A strip of the pallium is marked with a cross that hangs in front on the left shoulder, turns around the neck and, passing onto the right shoulder, descends very low toward the chest, at last, to return to the left shoulder and to fall again around the back. This manner of wearing the pallium was maintained until the High Middle Ages when, with the use of pins, it began to be worn so that the two ends hung exactly in the middle of the chest and the back. With the pins replaced by a fixed piece of sewn material, the papal pallium took on the form of an enclosed circle, that one finds commonplace after the ninth century, as one sees in depictions in various Roman basilicas, like Santa Maria Antiqua, Santa Maria in Trastevere and San Clemente. The two ends of the pallium, however, always maintained a considerable length, until, after the fifteenth century, they were progressively shortened. The ornamentation of the pallium, that one finds illustrated already in a Ravenna mosaic, became thereafter always more elaborate. Four, six or eight red or black crosses were sewn onto it; on the edge fringe was sometimes attached. In the developed form of the pallium, the ends of the strips end with little bands of lead covered with black silk. The three jeweled pins, that originally served to hold the pallium firmly in place, already by the thirteenth century became a simply decorative element. The pallium of the metropolitan archbishops, in its present form, is a straight sash of material of almost five centimeters, made of white wool, curved at the center thus allowing it to rest on the shoulders over the Roman or Gothic chasuble and with two black flaps falling in front and behind, so that, seen either from the front or from behind, the vestment reminds one of the letter Y. It is decorated with six crosses of black silk, one on each end and four on the incurvature, and is decorated in front and on the back, with three pins made of gold and jewels (acicula). The different form of the papal pallium with respect to that of the metropolitans makes clear the diversity of jurisdiction signified by the pallium. On behalf of the volunteers of St. Vincent de Paul and the people we serve, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who generously contributed to our last Brown Bag Sunday collection. Please be assured that all donations go toward helping those who are less fortunate in our neighborhoods. Your contributions have helped in so many ways and we are blessed that the generosity of our parishioners allows us to continue in our mission. Sincerely, Ann Olin, St. Vincent de Paul Nativity Conference Thanks to the generosity of so many, we joyfully completed the 22nd Nativity Adopt-a-Family Program. We serviced 193 families, purchased many goods for several charitable organizations and provided helpful materials for over 75 homeless. We would like to thank the literally hundreds of people involved in this effort. It is a great experience to see so many joyful people, especially the children, celebrating the Christmas holiday in this way. We also finished delivery in record time as everything was done by noon. We look forward to your participation next year and encourage your year round support of our St. Vincent de Paul group that goes out several times a week to serve the needy in our parish. God bless you all. The Adopt-A-Family Program
