3 Page Three St. Charles Borromeo Church January 1, 2017 Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus. Dream of Joseph - Mt. I :20b-21 a Dear Friends and Parishioners: The picture I have of St. Joseph is one of a hard-working, practical man. Exhausted at the end of a long day of carpentry, I don't picture him subject to restless sleeping. However, the Lord surely touched Joseph in his encounter with the angel. I am left with confidence that Joseph was so sure of the genuineness of the message he received, that he moved forward with conviction to fulfill God's plan for him and the world. He is certainl y that picture of 'the just and loyal servant.' How often the power of God and the cooperation of His friends brings about the fulfillment of His plan. The Christmas narratives simply tell the story of faith-filled individuals, who were conscious and sensitive to the presence of God in their lives. They were willing, though somewhat fearful, to believe in the messages they received. Thei r positive response brought salvation to the world in the person of Jesus Christ. Conviction overcame fear. Today we celebrate the Feast of Mary the Mother of God. We begin We can't thi nk of that family and exclude Mary or Joseph. Their cooperation brought about God s plan. Each had a different experience of Faith. Truthfully, most of us identify with Joseph. We see the limitations and weak nesses of our own life. Today we are invited, as was Joseph, to cooperate with God's plan in our lives. Mary was filled with God 's Spirit from the first. The power of the Spirit of God and the willingness and cooperation of those who love Him has brought tremendous good into our world since the moment that Mary and Joseph responded in faith to the message of an angel. The will of God and the challenge to welcome Jesus into our own hearts and bring Him to our world continue to motivate us even to this day. Mary cooperating with the message of the Angel Gabriel, accepted the invitation of the Lord and bore Jesus in her womb through the power of the Holy Spirit. Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us. (Mt. 1 :24) God would dwell among His people, in their midst. When there is faith i n a family, t he unfolding of life is more than just an accident or genetic, or because of our own decisions. We see and believe t hat God's plan for the world is unfolding in our family because God is with us. He has come to dwell wi th us in our sadness, joys, challenges, disappointment, successes, sicknesses, misunderstanding, and all the range of human experience. God is with us. He doesn't dwell in some distant palace in some distant land. I thank you for being a part of the St. Charles Borromeo Church Family. God bless you and your loved ones for all the good you have done by your generosity and prayerful support. We pray that you had a blessed Christmas, and a joyful New Year of 201 7! 4 Page Four St. Charles Borromeo Church Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin LIVING AND LEARNING IN FIJI BY NILTON IMAN This article first appeared in Columban Magazine in May of 2016 My name is Nilton Iman, and I am a priest of the Diocese of Chimbote, a land blessed with the blood of the first martyrs of my country, Peru. These past months, I was meditating during my personal prayer on John 12:24. I assure you that unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it can only be a single seed. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. The reason was the ceremony of beatification of the first Peruvian martyrs P. Michael, P. Zbigniew (Polish Franciscans) and P. Sandro (Italian missionary), killed by the terrorist group Sendero Luminoso, (the Shining Path) in August They gave their lives in our Diocese of Chimbote, Peru. I thought about their determination to leave their countries, their cultures, and their families, and to go to a mission. I imagine there were many difficulties. I thanked God for their lives, their generosity and service, even to death. Appointed to Mission My vocation to the priesthood has been inspired by the testimony and the missionary life of priests from the Missionary Society of Santiago Apostle. They worked for many years in my parish. Their examples of life and service encouraged me to leave all and follow the Lord in the priesthood. I was ordained priest on March 23, 2008, and after five years of service in the mountains of my diocese, I began a missionary journey with the Columban Fathers. I was appointed to their mission in the Fiji Islands. On September 2014, I arrived in Fiji after a long journey. Now it is time to learn, live, and share. I feel like I m learning to be a missionary. For me, the first step is to know the mission learning the language, culture, customs, etc. In Fiji, I am experiencing a new culture and customs very different from mine. The first months were difficult, because I had to adapt to a new climate, time zone, language, etc. After studying the Fijian language, and visiting some communities of Columban mission, I am learning how life is in this part of the world. I m learning to be a missionary. Grandeur and Dignity The Fijian culture is deeply symbolic. The ceremonies are conducted with grandeur and dignity. For example, veiqaravi vakavanua is the traditional ceremony to welcome visitors. Yaqona, a traditional beverage, is drunk in all ceremonies. People present their condolences offering gifts, food, and mats on the occasion of a death, and this is known as reguregu. Cobo is the applause done with cupped hands to give thanks when a gift is received, or when you want to say something important in a meeting. People in the Fiji Islands have tremendous respect for the priest. Usually he sits in a place of honor when visiting the villages, the first glass of yaqona is served to him. He is offered sevusevu (a yaqona plant) and a tabua, (a whale s tooth) which are the symbol of gratitude for his visit. (continued on page 5)

5 Page Five St. Charles Borromeo Church January 1, 2017 (continued from page 4) Family Is Important The people in Fiji live their faith with joy, closeness, and generosity. For the Fijian culture, the family and the people who inhabit the same territory are very important. Tasks such as cleaning, preparing a welcome ceremony, fishing, gardening, and more, are not only individual efforts, but also are done with a sense of brotherhood, that is, people live helping each other. The essence of life in Fiji is respect, joy, generosity, family, neighbors, countrymen, and brotherhood expressed through a symbolic view of the world. In conversations with families, meetings with young people, visiting the sick, interreligious meetings, and the celebration of Mass, I am getting to know a God close and present in the history, the customs, and in the culture of Fijians. He gives me the strength and courage to continue discovering His presence among the people, to serve Him with joy, passion, and enthusiasm in mission. Serve the Lord In conclusion, mission is an invitation to know, to live, and to share our faith with others, wherever we are. Throughout this time in Fiji, with a contemplative sight, I have tried to understand what it means to serve the Lord in mission. I am beginning to understand something and that fills me with wonder and joy. I am learning and living with enthusiasm, because I am sharing with an open heart my priestly ministry building the Kingdom. I am walking every day with joy and gratitude, because it s worth spending our lives for the Kingdom. I want to thank God for His goodness and love in this time of missionary experience in Fiji. Also, I want to thank the Columban Fathers for giving me the opportunity to mission with them. St. Columban, and the first martyrs P. Miguel, P. Zbigniew and P. Sandro, beatified in our Chimbotana Church of Peru, continue to inspire me in this missionary journey. Originally from Peru, Fr. It is very important that these pledges be paid, so that our Parish will reach and, hopefully, exceed our goal. Once the pledge payments have exceeded our goal, we receive all of the additional funds for use in our Parish Ministries. The family that prays together stays together. Holy Family Service Center Why I Volunteer at the Service Center I help because I feel it s my purpose to make things better. That s also my reward, the ability to be able to give. Vince, guest at our hot breakfast/hot shower ministry. A few weeks ago, Jan Horger, team leader of the hot breakfast ministry had to make an announcement at the hot breakfast that the restrooms were becoming so dirty and unsanitary that we might have to revoke the privilege of using the restrooms unless people keep it cleaner when they use it, and we don t want to have to do that, said Jan. Vince, a service center client for two years, and a guest at our breakfast said, I ll clean it!. Since then Vince has put on an apron every Thursday, gotten a mop and bucket, and he stands by the restroom door reminding our guests to keep it clean. When they don t he mops it himself. Christmas Toy Giveaway On December 17 th, more than 111 families with more than 260 children received toys, books, and $25 grocery gift certificates enclosed in handmade Christmas cards. Mothers and fathers had the opportunity to choose gifts from the Mother s Table after picking up their toy bags. We had enough toys to send some to St. Patrick s and Holy Rosary Churches, and to a program helping victims of human sex trafficking. Thanks to all parishioners for their gifts, and thanks to the hard work of many service center volunteers along with team leader Cybal Hall, this year s Christmas toy project was a blessing to many. Service Center Resumes Normal Operating Hours on January 3 rd, 2017.
