3 Page Three St. Charles Borromeo Church May 7, 2017 Father Jim Melley Please join us on today at the 10 am Mass as we celebrate on this Good Shepherd Sunday the 40th Anniversary of Father Jim Melley s priestly service. A reception will be held in the Social Center after Mass. All are welcome! Doris Bogardus, 96, and Darrell "Bogy" Bogardus, 97, of Thousand Oaks, are former long- me parishioners here at St. Charles and have been married for 75 years. "Every li le bump in the road should not be a reason to think about divorce or separa on." Darrell "Bogy" Bogardus A Lifetime of Love: Longtime Couple Shares Secrets by Wendy Pierro this article appeared in the Ventura County Star on February 10, 2017 How does a couple stay married for 75 years? What's the secret to a lifetime of love? As Valentine's Day approaches, a Ventura County couple who have been married more than 50 years shares their thoughts on what it takes to stick together for better or for worse. Commitment, faith and family are common themes. The word "divorce" is not allowed because, in the eyes of these couples, it's not an option. They have vowed to face life together.

4 Page Four St. Charles Borromeo Church 4th Sunday of Easter RCIA CATECHUMENS At the Easter Vigil Liturgy, our parish family received new members into our community through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion. We are featuring these members in our bulletin. When you see them at Mass, extend a warm welcome, and please hold them in prayer as they take the next steps on their journey of faith. Jesus called me, he opened my heart. I was raised a Jehovah's Witness and was married to an elder. I became very involved and was eventually ordained as a Minister. But I still felt unsettled and had many questions. I took them to the Elders, but they couldn't really answer my questions. My heart was seeking truth, so I began to search. It's taken me a long time, but I have found where I belong - He just opened my heart. I'm so grateful he didn't forsake me, but showed the true path. I joined the RCIA program and never looked back, and I've never been happier. Although I was never baptized I spent a lot of time in Catholic Church as a young child. My grandmother played a huge role in raising me as a child, which is who I would go to church with. In her younger days she was a nun and tried to instill her faith into me. Once she passed away I completely turned away from religion. It was only until about 4 years ago when I met my girlfriend that I started to dive back into my faith. We respected each others beliefs, and we were fine to agree to disagree. But the more I was around her and her family the more I saw how much peace and happiness their faith brought to them. It got me thinking about how peaceful and happy my grandmother always was. At first I can say I started the RCIA program because I knew this is the girl I m going to marry and I know how much she wanted to be married in a Catholic Church, but the more classes and the more I started to learn the happier I became with everything and everyone around me. I started to realize that this is what was missing from my life for all of those years. I want to thank God, RCIA team, and the Saint Charles parish for helping me follow my journey to the kingdom of heaven. Need Support? 5 Page Five St. Charles Borromeo Church May 7, 2017 VETERAN CFI: RALPH TRUGLIO SIXTY YEARS OF TEACHING FOR FREE By Phil Scott this article appeared in AOPA online on April 1, 2017 ONE SATURDAY MORNING IN NOVEMBER 2016, RALPH TRUGLIO GAVE HIS LAST OFFICIAL LESSON: A CHECKOUT IN A CESSNA 182 TO A KID, HE SAID. Truglio taught the pilot to fly when he really was a kid, at age 16, and Truglio was 43. Now this kid is 67 years old, and Truglio is 94. Truglio has been a CFI (certified flight instructor) for 60 years. Here s the cool part: He never charged a dime. Truglio got his pilot certificate as part of the Civilian Pilot Training Program in 1942, joined the military, and stayed in until he got his teaching certification. He went into the reserves and started teaching industrial arts in high school. One day in 1955 the principal told Truglio that he wanted him to take over the school s flying club, the Afterburners. Like all high school clubs, the Afterburners needed a group picture, but they didn t have an airplane to use as a backdrop. A couple of Afterburners were also members of Kitty Hawk Squadron 3, sponsored by the North Hollywood Optimist Club. Squadron 3, at Van Nuys Airport, owned an airplane which the kids suggested for the photos. Truglio started spending his weekends helping at the squadron. In 1960 he got his flight instructor certificate, began instructing kids every Saturday, and held ground school every Monday night. In 1983, after 36 years as a teacher, Truglio retired and turned to flight instructing full time. In fact, he pretty much took over Squadron 3. A decade ago, to mark his fiftieth anniversary with the squadron, some former students put together a celebration at a hotel nearby. So many of the kids would come to me and say Remember me? I said, No. I have no idea how many I ve instructed in this group, he added. Of his 8,000 hours, 7,500 of it has been instructing. During the party, daughter Nancy stuck close by. The thing that touched me most, she said, people would come up and say Hi, Mr. Truglio, I flew with you in the 50s, 60s, 80s. They had grown up and had families, and brought their kids with them. It showed me that this was more than teaching kids to fly. It was laying the groundwork for their lives. It was one of those things that had impact in so many ways.
