MORNING PRAYERS (LAUDS) IN OUR LADY S CHAPEL MARCH 24 TH - HOLY THURSDAY 9AM MARCH 25 TH GOOD FRIDAY 9AM MARCH 26 TH HOLY SATURDAY 9AM (morning prayer handouts will be provided and the service will take approx. 20 min.) The purpose of the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) is to sanctify the day and all human activity. The Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) is the prayer not only of the clergy, but of the whole People of God. Apostolic Constitution, Canticum Laudis. The Liturgy of the Hours is one of the richest prayer resources of the Church, with prayers, psalms, and readings for each of the Hours, changing each day and through each of the seasons. It is prayed by clergy and religious and is very much encouraged to be prayed faithfully by the laity as well. It is the universal, common prayer of the church. It is amazing to think that throughout the world, throughout each day and its hours, these common prayers and petitions are being prayed, whether in rectories, monasteries, seminaries or in people s homes. Both public and common prayer by the people of God is considered to be among one of the primary duties of the Church. From the very beginning of our Church, those who were baptized "devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the community, to the breaking of the bread, and to prayer" (Acts 2:42). The Acts of the Apostles gives frequent testimony to the fact that the Christian community prayed together communally. The witness of the early Church teaches us that individual Christians devoted themselves to prayer at fixed times throughout the day. For example, the last hour of the day when evening draws near, or the first hour when night draws to a close with the rising of the sun for a start to a new day. In the course of time other hours came to be sanctified by prayer. Such prayer in common gradually took the form of a set cycle of hours. This liturgy of the hours or divine office, enriched by readings, is principally a prayer of praise and petition. It is the prayer of the Church with Christ and to Christ. It is Prayer, which is about the sanctification of time and of each day, and it is linked with the Feasts and Seasons of the Liturgical Year. The Lord calls us to pray without ceasing, and this is what the Hours enable us to do. I invite you to come and pray Morning Prayers with me during the Triduum. Peace & Blessings, Deacon Ryan
3 Page Three St. Charles Borromeo Church March 20, 2016 Holy Week & The Triduum GOD, WHO IS RICH IN MERCY, BECAUSE OF THE GREAT LOVE HE HAS FOR US, EVEN WHEN WE WERE DEAD IN OUR TRANSGRESSIONS, BROUGHT US TO LIFE WITH CHRIST - EPHESIANS 2:4-5 Today begins the most solemn of weeks in the Church year - the week which culminates in our celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead, Easter Sunday. The passage of Jesus from death to life is called the Paschal Mystery. The Liturgy of Holy Week and The Triduum is a celebration of word and gesture... reverent prayer and solemn gesture. The liturgies of the week, each one beautiful and meaningful in its own way, invite us to embrace the spirit of the central meaning of our faith. This year we will be united with our new Holy Father, Francis, as he leads the Universal Church in prayer. Jesus Christ took up His cross for us - the righteous one for the sake of the guilty. His suffering and death, in obedience to the will of the Father, was a perfect act of expiation for the disobedience of all. Death could not hold Him. He is risen as He said!!! We cannot help but be grateful. God's grace - His boundless love - conquered the power of evil. Where there was darkness, light has conquered; where there was hopelessness, hope was restored; when we were captive, we were freed; where there was death, life has overcome. We begin the week with the solemn blessing of the Palms this Sunday morning, followed by the procession, reminding us of the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. We participate in the Passion and Death of the Lord according to St. Luke. At the Chrism Mass on Monday evening in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, the Archbishop will bless the oils that we will use in our Parish during the year for Baptism, Confirmation, and Anointing of the Sick. We are united with our Bishop, the successor of the apostles, who is the sign of our unity with the Holy Father and the universal Church. Those blessed oils will be brought to St. Charles and will be presented at the Liturgy of Holy Thursday. The Triduum begins as we celebrate the institution of the Eucharist and the Ordination of the first priests on Holy Thursday. We recall the mandate of Christ, reminding us that our life is a life of service - where there is charity and love - God is present there. Just as Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, we are reminded that each of us are servants of our brothers and sisters. On Good Friday, as we participate in the Passion of the Lord according to John, pray for the universal needs of the Church and all people, and venerate the Cross of Christ, we recall that Jesus' message of love is meant for all people of good will. We pray that all will come to know that love personally. The remainder of Friday and Saturday before the Liturgy are a time of reflection. Mass is not celebrated. The Eucharist is not offered to the people, except as `viaticum'...for those near death. We await the celebration of the Resurrection! The Triduum is ONE Celebration lasting three days. We invite you to participate in all or part of the Triduum. Allow the Liturgy of the Church to help you prepare to celebrate the Easter Mystery fully! Join us for our solemn prayer this week! HE IS RISEN FROM THE DEAD, AND HE IS LORD! Our Easter Celebration begins with the lighting of the new fire. The Paschal Candle, the symbol of Jesus' risen from the dead, is lit, and is carried in procession into the Church. The deacon chants 'CHRIST OUR LIGHT', and the Easter Proclamation is sung, as the Church is brought from darkness into the light. Truly, Jesus - risen from death - is the light that leads us from darkness! With that reminder, we reflect on the history of God's working on behalf of His people, as revealed in the scriptures. We bless the waters that will use to Baptize new members into our Church community, at the same time reminding us of the life giving waters of our own Baptism--the day we passed from death to life, and were promised a life beyond our life here. In welcoming new members into our Church community at the table of the Eucharist we are reminded we each ultimately pray for a place at the banquet feast in heaven ourselves. We proclaim to the world: Christ has died; Christ is Risen; Christ will come again! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! The Triduum is one feast celebrated over three days! Sincerely yours in Christ, Monsignor Robert J. Gallagher

Today, most social contact, especially among young people, is conducted almost exclusively on smart phones and tablets. Technology continues to rapidly change. All of us must continue our efforts to stay abreast of the many new mobile device apps that may be used by young people to communicate with others and could potentially be used to manipulate or abuse them. RCIA CATECHUMENS At the Easter Vigil Liturgy, our parish family will receive new members into our community through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion. We are featuring our Elect each week of Lent. When you see them at Mass, extend a warm welcome, and please hold them in prayer as they take the next steps on their journey of faith through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Over a year ago, I humbly came into the doors of your parish in need of prayers, hope and a miracle. Father Chan and my peer branches (The Vine), gave me the support of a safe place for me to pray for my family, friends and myself. With Hope and Peace conquering over fear, I turned my will to God every morning patiently waiting for a miracle. During The Vine, I was given the time to pray before the Eucharist and be in the silence of my own thoughts through meditation. This is where my will of completing the steps of my Catholic faith appeared to me. Through the RCIA program, I have been given a gift from God to listen, questions and process our Catholic history and be reminded of the foundation our faith offers. Through the RCIA Team, I am pleased to be continuing my journey in the Catholic faith with Love and Support. I want to Thank Everyone who has kept me and my family in their prayers through my journey.
