3 Page Three St. Charles Borromeo Church September 1, 2013 The dream of the Church... Men and Women Outstanding in Holiness, Living Witnesses of God's Unchanging Love REPLICA OF STAINED GLASS WINDOWS FOR OUR SANCTUARY A WARM AND WELCOMING PLACE OF WORSHIP It seems that we are enjoying praying together in our temporary Church! There is more light and more air. But, in addition to this, there is also a feeling of welcome and peace. Of course, this was our Church building from 1937 until There are many happy memories of times spent in 'the old Church.' There are two stained glass windows up high on the transepts. One is of the Nativity, and the other is of 'Our Lady of Sorrows.' The 'Nativity Window' was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, and the 'Decent From the Cross' (Sorrowful Mother) was a gift from Bob and Dolores Hope. These beautiful windows are probably 80 years old. The stained glass window above the altar area portrays St Michael the Archangel ready for battle. The center piece of the window was completed in Chartres, France, at the Gabriel Loire Studio. The extensions to form a star were completed by local artisans. This beautiful piece is a reminder of God's providential care. 'St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle...' The window was sponsored by Mr. Don Trasatti and his family, in memory of Margo Trasatti (RIP). This family was an early sponsor of our efforts as our Capital Campaign got off the ground in The two murals behind the altar area are reproductions taken from the stained glass windows that have been prepared for the refurbished Church. These windows are made up of many connected medallions, each portraying an outstanding Christian Witness from the North American continent. These Saints, Blesseds, and Venerables are part of our faith history, and each of them witnessed to Jesus Christ in a different way, with differing talents, among God's people here in the 'new world.' The cover of this week s bulletin has pictures of the new stained glass windows. The medallion detail will be discussed in the bulletin next week. All of the medallions, with the exception of one, have been sponsored by one of our families. The remaining medallion honoring Mother Mary Lange, Servant of God, is still available for sponsorship. Mother Mary Lange was a freed black slave, and a religious pioneer. She is the foundress of the Oblate Sisters of Providence (OSP), and St Frances Academy (in Baltimore). Sister first worked in the United States among transplants from Haiti and the Dominican Republic (Hispania), both black and white. She and her sisters taught religion to poor children in the basement of St. Mary's Seminary. Along with Mother Seton, she was an important witness to the gospel among God's children in that part of the country. VANCREST CONSTRUCTION, who have a fine reputation for restoring older facilities in the Archdiocese, was chosen to complete the work in our Church. The decisions we have made about the Church have been well thought out, and we can tell already that the contractor and sub contractors have a good idea of how important our St. Charles Church is to us. They will give us their best efforts. Sincerely yours in Christ, Monsignor Robert J. Gallagher Pastor

4 Page Four St. Charles Borromeo Church The Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time The NEW EVANGELIZATION: The New Evangelization calls all Catholics to deepen our faith, believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel. We are called to be evangelized and then go forth to evangelize. The New Evangelization invites each Catholic to renew their relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church. (from the USCCB) Faith Resources for THE YEAR OF FAITH October 11, 2012-November 24, 2013 KNOW YOUR FAITH The Gospel for the Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C On a sabbath he went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to a higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." Then he said to the host who invited him, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." (Luke 14:1, 7-14) TREASURES of OUR FAITH By RYAN ADAMS - Deacon Candidate Greetings brothers and sisters. As we go through this Year of Faith, each week we will take a journey together to deepen and rediscover our faith as Catholic Christians. We will take time to look at the rich traditions of our Church, we ll look at what certain things signify and their symbolism, take time to answer some frequently asked questions and look at why we do certain things as Catholics. This week we ll look at THE EUCHARIST. Let s first start with the definition. It is a translation from the Greek Eucharistia, meaning Thanksgiving, the giving of thanks. So that makes the Liturgy of the Eucharist the liturgy of Thanksgiving. The Eucharist is one of the seven sacraments of the Church, but it is also considered the Source and Summit of the Christian life The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. The Last Supper appears in the Gospels of Saints Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and also in St. Paul s letter to the Corinthians. In those four accounts, all four agree that Jesus said, This is my Body, as he spoke over the bread. Then he referred to his Blood as the Blood of the new covenant as he spoke over the wine. The apostles first named it the Breaking of Bread, but they soon saw the need to separate the rite from a meal because they wanted an even more prayerful setting for this act of worship. The Eucharist celebration was moved to Sunday in memory of Christ s resurrection. The Only minister of the Eucharist authorized to celebrate the rite and consecration of the Eucharist is a validly ordained priest who represents Christ himself and acts before God the Father in the name of the Church. Let s talk about how this takes place. When the bread and wine are consecrated, they actually cease to be bread and wine and instead become the Body and Blood of Christ. This is known as TRANSUBSTANTIATION. It s meaning being the substance, the essential nature of the bread and wine, is transformed in a way beyond our human comprehension, into the most precious Body and Blood of Christ, but the accidents, the actual physical traits of the bread and wine, remain unchanged. Through transubstantiation, at the moment of the consecration of the bread and wine, a miracle occurs: the substance of the bread and wine actually becomes the substance of the Body and Blood of our Lord. This takes place during the Eucharistic Prayer, when the INSTITUTION NARRATIVE is prayed by recalling the words of Jesus at the Last Supper over the bread, Christ said, THIS IS MY BODY, and over the wine, THIS IS THE CUP OF MY BLOOD. The teaching of the Catholic Church is that through transubstantiation, Christ is now truly present under the remaining appearance of the bread and wine. Christ s Body and Blood are now truly present and the bread and wine are now truly absent. Church doctrine holds that this presence and absence is real, not merely something in the mind of the believer, and not simply just in symbol. This is not a case of something being symbolic, but rather something we truly believe to be actual and true. The communicant who receives either Body or Blood or Both, actually receives Christ, wholly and entirely. Where one is, the other must be. The Catholic Church holds that Christ as a whole is present: Body & Blood, Soul & Divinity.

Bullying typically consists of direct behaviors, such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, shoving and stealing. But it might also be indirect, such as spreading rumors that cause victims to be socially isolated through intentional exclusion. Cyberbullying, which involves the use of the Internet or mobile phones to send inappropriate messages and images to or about others, is also behavior that is not tolerated in our Catholic schools. If you suspect bullying of a child at school, please contact the school principal with your concerns. 8 Page Eight St. Charles Borromeo Church The Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Tell the House of Representatives: PASS BIPARTISAN IMMIGRATION REFORM LEGISLATION THAT PROTECTS FAMILIES The U.S. Senate has passed comprehensive immigration reform legislation by a large margin. The U.S. House of Representatives is currently considering whether to address immigration reform legislation that can provide significant relief to potentially millions of people and their families. Now is a critical time to contact your House members and urge them to pass common sense immigration reform. The U.S. Catholic Bishops, through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), have urged Congress to pass immigration reform which: Provides a path to citizenship for undocumented persons living in the United States Preserves and strengthens family unity as a cornerstone of our national immigration system Provides legal avenues for low-skilled immigrants to come and work in the United States Restores due process for individuals caught up in the immigration system Promotes efforts that will address the root causes of migration, such as poverty and persecution Please contact your House members today and urge them to support immigration reform legislation that provides a path to citizenship for the undocumented and that preserves family unity. Action you could take: contact Members of Congress through , phone calls or FAX letters. To send a pre-written, instant to Congress go to You can call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at and ask for your Members' offices. For more information, go to POVERTY: CAUSES, EFFECTS, AND SOLUTIONS Deacon Walter Hanson, Economic Justice Committee Poverty is a complex economic issue. It has long-term effects that are interrelated, and it is connected to a variety of social concerns: Crime ranks high as one of the effects of poverty. Unemployment, income inequality, low incomes are contributing factors. Poverty creates an environment where children don t go to school, or if they do, they don t see how hard work can improve their life. Poverty leads to anti-social behavior. Poverty also may result in alcohol and substance abuse, poor housing, disease and risky sexual behavior. Poverty is divisive and causes social tensions. It may be destabilizing to our nation. Poverty is physically and emotionally damaging and it can become a persistent and long-term struggle over several generations. It becomes a vicious circle. According to a 2011 Census Bureau report 46 million people in the U.S. are living in poverty. The opposite of poverty is wealth. Jesus did not say that wealth in itself was bad, but he certainly emphasized the problems that might accompany it. Wealth or its pursuit can lead us into many temptations; it can corrupt us. But the root problem is that it takes us away from our pursuit of God, of our following the teachings of Jesus, and of our finding the path to eternal life. That is why Jesus said that it is difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Presently, and in many ways similar to what Jesus experienced in his time, wealth is unevenly and unjustly distributed. Poverty is a moral issue just as it was in the time of Jesus. It is primarily an economically structural problem. Today, our economic structures are unjust in that they benefit a few and condemn millions to poverty. And the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. This is inherent in the very structure of our economy based solely on the profit motive. Our political inertia, our tax system, our business practices, our high standard of living are in part based on the exploitation of others. What is it that we can do? We should engage our legislators to focus on the common good instead of special interests. We should support any programs that stimulate job growth at a living wage. We should petition Washington to revise our present income tax law and regulations. We should not support any business that sustains poverty by the way it conducts its operations. We should support basic human rights to food, shelter, healthcare, and education. This brief article on poverty just highlights some of the causes, effects and solutions. Many studies and books, both secular and religious, including the Bible, deal with poverty in great length and detail. It is time to go after this cancer and remove the causes, not just continue with treatment of the symptoms. We must be pro-active and not give in to mental resistance to change. We are called to build a just society. This is part of our Christian responsibility and it is also our civic duty.
