2 A NOTE FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR We are a little past the halfway point in February, and have begun celebrating the Lenten season. Perhaps that is an oxymoron, since we think of Lent as a penitential season. But Sundays are feast days (of a sort) during Lent; they don t count toward the total number of 40 days. As I mentioned in last month s article, we had a wonderful Christmas Eve and began the new calendar year with a big snowstorm that pre-empted our first choir rehearsal of But we still had a wonderful time singing a traditional spiritual with the congregation on the first Sunday after Epiphany. If you have ever thought about singing with the choir, I invite you to join us for this season. We rehearse on Thursday evenings, from 7:00-8:00 (sometimes a little longer, especially during the current season), and on Sundays from 9:15-9:45, preparing beautiful anthems for Lent and Easter. If you need to be tempted by the music we will be singing, I can tell you that we have another anthem that will involve congregational participation coming up (on February 25), and will be preparing a three-part arrangement of John Stainer s God So Loved the World, with piano accompaniment. We performed this anthem in its original four-part, unaccompanied arrangement in Lent 2005, my first Lenten season at St. Peter s. We will be revisiting Susan Matsui s beautiful setting of Psalm 51 on March 18, and a singing unison setting of Wondrous Love, with a new-to-us tune, for Maundy Thursday. I hope you will join us to celebrate both the Lenten and Easter seasons at St. Peter s. Kirsten Annual Lenten Food Drive St. Peter s Lenten Devotionals Please bring a bag of groceries to church and help us to increase our contribution to the Beverly Bootstraps Food Pantry as part of our Annual Parish Lenten Outreach Offering. are available on our website at stpetersbeverly.org and on the Usher s Table at the rear of the church. 5 The 14 Stations of the Cross Exhibit 2018 About the artist Peter Rockwell was born in New Rochelle, New York, in He is the youngest son of famed American illustrator, Norman Rockwell. While he was a frequent model of his father s, he never intended to become an artist himself. A sculpting class during his junior year at Haverford College would change that. After graduating in 1958 with a degree in English Literature, he went on to study at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1961 Rockwell, his wife Cynthia, and young son Geoffrey, moved to Italy when he was awarded a traveling fellowship to study at the Scuola di Marmo in Carrara. The young family had thought they would stay only for six months, but they never left. Rockwell taught at various schools in Rome while creating a marvelous body of work. After his wife died in 2013 and living alone became more challenging, Rockwell moved to Beverly and joined St. Peter s in October Rockwell s sculpture has been exhibited in Italy and throughout the United States. He has created pieces for numerous public commissions, including the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., Haverford College, Boston College, and various sites in Italy. His work is included in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.; ICCROM in Rome; the Bridgeport Museum of American Art in Bridgeport, Connecticut; the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio; and Norman Rockwell Museum. Portrait by Jimmy Kennedy Rockwell is also an authority on the history of stone carving, and is the author of The Art of Stoneworking (1993), one of the most important books in the field. Rockwell has lectured on the subject, and has served as a consultant and stone-carving expert at historical and archeological sites in Italy, India, Pakistan, and Turkey. In 2004, he was commissioned to carve The Tree of Life for Boston College by the University s Christian Art Committee. Made of bronze, the statue represents an olive tree with with its characteristic bifurcated trunk. It has elements which represents the body of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Associate Professor Franco Mormando said of the statute, It's a feast for the eyes, the heart and the soul. It's a piece of art that will definitely make viewers think." The following year, Boston College commissioned him to make wood cuts of the Stations of the Cross, a set of which now hangs in the sanctuary at St. Peter s. The wood cuts are on loan from the Norman Rockwell Museum. The Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers. Rockwell s version is powerful and thought-provoking. Parishioners and members of the public are invited to pray the stations of the cross (booklets can be found on the usher s table). ~ The church will be open for walking the stations on Wednesdays before and after the 12:10 p.m. midweek service and on evening dates to be announced~

7 About the Holy Week Services Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday- March 25 at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. This service marks the beginning of Holy Week. The service starts in the Huiginn Hall with the reading of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The congregation, carrying palm fronds, processes into the church singing All Glory Laud and Honor. Once in the church the mood changes. The passion gospel is read in parts by various readers with the part of the murderous crowd voiced by the congregation. The service ends on a solemn note as we enter Holy Week and await Easter Sunday the following week. Tenebrae- Wednesday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. The name Tenebrae is from the Latin word for darkness or shadows. The service symbolizes the growing darkness as we move toward Good Friday and the return of the light at Easter. The liturgy is characterized by the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord remains. Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence. Maundy Thursday- March 29 at 7:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper when Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples on the night before he was crucified. At the end of the liturgy, the altar is stripped and all decorations are veiled or removed from the church to represent the arrest of Jesus and the beginning of his trial, Passion, death and resurrection. This is a powerful moment, and it ends with all leaving the church in silence. In contrast to joyful Easter celebrations when we worship the resurrected Savior, Maundy Thursday services are typically more solemn occasions, marked by the shadow of Jesus' betrayal. Good Friday- Way of the Cross - March 30 at Noon Way of the Cross (or Stations of the Cross) refers to the depiction of the final hours (or Passion) of Jesus, and the devotion commemorating the Passion. Guided by illustrations, the service leads you through the fourteen stations mentioned in scripture, or places of Jesus agony. This year, the Stations of the Cross hanging in the church, are by St. Peter s member Peter Rockwell. They are from woodcuts he made and are on loan from the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Our thanks to Peter for offering them for devotional use during Lent and to the museum for installing them. The order of service for walking the stations is in a booklet on the ushers table at the back of the nave. Each of these illustrations becomes the focus of one of the service meditations. Good Friday Liturgy- March 30 at 7:30 p.m. The beautiful Good Friday liturgy with the Passion according to John and the Solemn Collects. In all its sadness, is also a liturgy of hope, faith, and victory for those of us who already know how the story turns out. The Great Vigil of Easter- Saturday, March 31 at 8 p.m. The Great Vigil of Easter is the single most important service of the year. It is an incredibly powerful and special worship experience. The service begins in darkness followed by the lighting of the Pascal Candle. It is a service of joy and inspiration as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and once again say Alleluia, alleluia! Make A Plan To Experience the Journey to Easter.
