2 From the Desk of Fr. Mike McGovern, Temporary Administrator THE POWER OF JESUS The Gospel of Mark contains accounts of numerous miracles performed by Jesus. Christ casts out unclean spirits, calms a storm on the sea, cures a person afflicted with leprosy and raises up a girl who has died. These miracles show us that Jesus has power: power over evil, power over nature, power over sickness and power over death. We should not think of Christ's power as some mere memento wri en about in the four gospels. Rather, the power of Christ is real and available to us in the Church today; we experience that power in the sacraments, in the liturgy, in personal prayer and in the community of the Church. Recognizing that Jesus is Lord, where is it in your life that you would ask Jesus to exercise his power to forgive, heal and strengthen you? ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA This week on June 13 the Church celebrates the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua. St. Anthony is probably one of the most beloved saints in the en re Catholic Church. Born August 15, 1195, Anthony was a Portuguese Catholic priest who became a friar in the rapidly growing Franciscan order. While well educated in theology, Anthony became an acclaimed preacher whose sermons could be understood by people with li le or no educa on. Many people turn to St. Anthony for his help when trying to find lost objects. Perhaps we know someone in our lives who is feeling a bit "lost" in their rela onship with the Lord, or in their rela onship with family or friends. I encourage your prayers to St. Anthony this week, asking for his intercession on behalf of those who need his guidance, so that they can find their way to a deeper life with the Lord and with loved ones. A REMINDER During the month of June, I will be the Temporary Administrator of St. Bede un l Fr. George Kouene arrives at the end of the month. You may reach me through the St. Bede Parish office: Thank you. In our Lord, Father Mike McGovern Administrator mmcgovern@archchicago.org 2 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018

It is not simply a big church, as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (La n for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Bal more and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now func on as the seat of the bishop. ACTIONS Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak. St. Anthony of Padua When a bishop dies or re res, it is said that the seat is vacant, and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop s point of view.
