Shawn Gould The Priority of Divine Worship The Lord God tells the Israelites that they must worship Him alone, and the Lord Jesus drives out the money changers from the temple precincts. If we had only these two bits of evidence, we would have enough to know that the Chris an religion can never be reduced to a social improvement organiza on. Underlying every other thing we do as disciples of Christ is the basic goal of knowing and loving God specifically as God has revealed Himself. Recall that the original reason for the conflict between the Israelites and pharaoh in Egypt arose because Moses asked that the Israelites be permi ed to go into the wilderness to offer sacrifice to God. (Exodus 5:1-3) It is because pharaoh refused this request repeatedly that Egypt was struck with the plagues and the Israelites received the promised land. The land of the covenant was given so that they could priori ze the worship of God in the manner that God gave them. As for the Lord Jesus, this episode in the temple highlights the importance He Himself places on worship. The Lord is meek, in the sense that He allows Himself to be put on the cross, when He could easily have avoided it. But He is not meek in the sense of being a push-over. Nor does He avoid all expression of anger, for there are mes when anger is righteous and the proper response to an evil. In this case, the temple authori es have allowed part of the temple, the building dedicated to the worship of the Most High God, to be used for purposes other than the worship of God. And the Lord is not amused. Some mes commentators on the cleansing of the temple a empt to make the argument that what the money-changers were doing was not really that bad, according to the customs of the me. This argument, however, will not stand. Jesus, God-incarnate, is the standard against which ac ons are judged, not someone whose ac ons are judged by some other standard. In this case, we who seek to follow Him should seek to priori ze what He priori zed, including the priority of the worship of God. The Catholic Church helps the world in many different ways. The Church builds and runs hospitals and schools, she relieves hunger, and provides shelter. We do these out of love of our neighbor, which is one of the explicit commands of the Lord. So I do not want in any way to diminish the importance of this work. We should all consider suppor ng our parish Lenten alms, which are going to our own excellent St. Vincent de Paul Society and to a parish in Puerto Rico that was strongly affected by Hurricane Maria. These social works, though, could also be performed by those who are not part of the Church and they o en are. There is one thing that the Church can provide to the world that no one else can: worship of God according to the revealed mind and will of God. It is an example of the classic, Catholic both/and. We must love our neighbor as ourselves, but we must also love and worship God above all creatures. 2 Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018

5 Lenten Focus 2018 Lent: Almsgiving, Fasting & Prayer Almsgiving: Giving to the poor...the charitable giving of money, food, or goods to people in need. This year, we are spli ng our Almsgiving between St. Vincent de Paul, St. Bede Conference and the Parish of the Resurrec on of Our Lord (Parroquia la Resurrección del Senor) in Canovanas, Puerto Rico. Containers and envelopes are available at the exits of the church. You may use a container to fill with your coin or an envelope for cash or check. Please make out the check to St. Bede Church. All dona ons should be returned by Palm Sunday and will be divided between St. Vincent de Paul and the Parish of the Resurrec on of Our Lord. Please be as generous as you are able. Each week, we will include informa on about the ways in which your dona ons will be u lized. St. Vincent de Paul What we do with your dona ons: We partner with others to bring a food truck from Northern Illinois Food Bank to St. Bede to serve those who are hungry in our area. In this volume are saints for each category, like St. Veronica, model of compassion, St. Nicholas, Patron of children, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Patroness of the homeless, nursing service and chari es. 7 40 Cans for 40 nights 40 Cans for 40 Nights is a Knights of Columbus charity program that connects tradi onal Lenten almsgiving with the nutri onal needs of poor families in our area. The idea of a simple, straigh orward one-can-per-day dona on is inspired by Christ s 40 days of fas ng in the desert. This project began on the first weekend in Lent, but it s not too late to join in! The canned food donated by the school children on Fridays and Sundays during Lent will be collected and weighed. Each Class will be weighed separately. We will post the donations weekly. Palm Sunday is the last day for donations. All food collected will be donated for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry on Holy Thursday. Dona ons at Mass can be assigned to either a School or Religious Educa on Class if requested. A table will be provided in Coleman Hall (church basement) along with bags and labels. We ask that you place the items in the bags provided and a ach a label to each bag, and if you wish, designate the dona on to a specific class. Please provide the name of the student to insure their class receives the proper credit. Our goal is to receive 500 lbs or 800 cans of food. The first three, having to do with our right rela onship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath. If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go una ended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper? We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath me in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gi : one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: The law of the L is perfect, / refreshing the soul (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gi, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking. Copyright J. S.
