2 From the Desk of the Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould Chris an Medita on As a follow up to my homily from last weekend, I want to present a summary of the method of medita on that I described. Think of it as involving two basic phases. The first phase involves preparing to pray, rather than praying itself. If you were going to use the holy scriptures to pray (which I highly recommend), you would choose the book of the bible, and the por on of that book, with which you are going to pray. My sugges on is that the sec on that you are actually going to pray with be rela vely brief probably no more than one of the subheadings that many bibles feature. Let s say you choose St. Mark s gospel and decide to just start at the beginning. You would pray with the first subsec on, which might be called The Preaching of John the Bap st. It runs from chapter one, verse one through verse eight. As part of the preparation for praying, you might read the whole of chapter one. I also recommend you use a study bible, like The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible, to answer any of the basic questions about references in the text. The second phase is the actual praying with the text. Set aside a definite period of me, like 15 minutes. Set a mer to relieve you of having to check the me. Find a place where you will be rela vely comfortable and able to be quiet with few distrac ons. Begin the prayer by asking God for help to be more aware of His presence. Then read the short sec on with which you are going to pray. Read it slowly and read it repeatedly, perhaps five mes or so. This first part of the prayer is intended to fill your mind with thoughts about God prompted by the ideas communicated through the sacred text. There may be a word or phrase that draws your a en on. And then you might become aware of God Himself. Simply be aware of God in silence. Then your a en on will likely wander. When you become aware that you have wandered, go back and reread either the phrase or word that drew your a en on or the whole text. If it helps, you can try to imagine yourself in the scene described by the text (this is easier if you are praying with something like the gospels). The point of the prayer is not to say much of anything to God using words though if you are spontaneously prompted to do so, feel free to speak what comes to mind. The point of this kind of prayer is to prac ce being aware of God and your rela onship to Him. Note that this kind of medita on is very different than what some of the Eastern religions, such as Buddhism, prac ce. Chris an medita on is oriented to an awareness of God, who is other than us (even though He is also profoundly present to us). It is not a mere openness to any spiritual energy or being that might be there, nor is it an inwardly focused contemplation of oneself. When your mer goes off, you re done. The repeated experience of becoming distracted and having to redirect yourself back to God through the sacred text can be frustra ng, especially at first. Keep at it! In combina on with praying during the sacred liturgy and with vocal prayers (the Lord s Prayer, etc., or extemporaneous prayers), the discipline of medita on helps to form a powerful habit of being aware of God. My Dear Parishioners of St. Bede, I want to thank you for your willing par cipa on in the music at St. Bede liturgies since I began as cantor here in September of Over the years, you have expanded your own base of liturgical music by learning many new hymns and Mass se ngs to enrich your prayer experience at Mass every week. You personally can claim a varied repertoire of classic Catholic songs, combined with some of the best contemporary Catholic music wri en of late. I strongly encourage you to con nue to sing out at Masses which you a end, trea ng each hymn as a prayer in your mind and in your heart. As you take each phrase you sing and pray it through the music, I hope you find that you come away with a more meaningful weekly experience, rediscovering how the hymns, the readings, the Psalm, the Gospel Acclama on, the Gospel, the Homily and all the Mass parts are interrelated and specific to the special day of the Church Year. I will miss being your leader-of-song at the 5:00 p.m., 7:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. weekend Masses and especially the wondrous gi the sense of joy I received, hearing your voices fill the worship space, as I stood at the cantor stand. I feel such gra tude for the calling to have sung with you all these years. We ask you to bring small items (travel size - see list below) to Coleman Hall this weekend (Dec. 9-10) and drop them in the containers in Coleman Hall. Together with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, we will assemble Blessing Bags December 16th to be given away through Pads and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Bring a friend along! 2017 St. Bede Annual Christmas Giving Tree The St. Bede Annual Christmas Giving Tree is almost over! This annual event offers our parish families opportuni es to provide much-needed basic items to organiza ons serving needy individuals and families throughout Lake County. It is a wonderful occasion to remember that Christmas is a me of giving, as well as receiving! We are collec ng and dona ng items for the following organiza ons: Aid for Women of Northern Lake County Serves women in need who are facing unexpected pregnancy and their children under the age of 2 years. Home of the Sparrow serves the community as a transi onal shelter program providing housing and suppor ve services for homeless women and their children in McHenry County and Northern Illinois. St. Vincent de Paul Helps our own parish stock the food pantry to aid our local community. Please choose a tag from the basket at the back of church. Gi requests range from $5 to $20 on average.
