2 July 12, 2015 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time TODAY S READINGS First Reading Amos said, The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people (Amos 7:12-15). Psalm Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3-14 [3-10]). Gospel Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two (Mark 6:7-13). Teach us also to be devoted to our crucified Savior as you were, that we may cheerfully bear our daily crosses for love of Him Who suffered so much for love of us. Most of all we beg you to pray that we may avoid sin, lead a holy life and save our souls. Amen. Please dress appropriate and bring bottled water. Saint Lucy Eyeglass Drive We are collecting your unwanted eye glasses. Prescription, reading, adult, children, tinted. All types of glasses. We will be collecting them throughout the month of July. Glasses will then be given to the Lions Club who will have them assessed and repaired. They will be given to those who are in need of glasses. Thank you. Our transitional deacon for the summer, Deacon Loeffler, has offered to bless your home. He will be available to bless homes or businesses in English or Spanish. 6 Spirituality is the first objective of the Society. Our primary purpose is not to bring help to the poor, At least when defined as material or financial assistance. Our primary purpose is to bring the love and peace of Christ to those who are suffering. In doing so, we bring the gift of ourselves and our time. Nonetheless, as St. James so aptly says, it is difficult to minister to someone s soul when that person s body is hungry or naked. Missionaries of all faiths have historically found that they had to minister to the physical needs of those in their care before they could effectively preach the Gospel: What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith, but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them The things needed for the body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. Although our objective is to bring love and peace, when we see our brother or sister suffering, we naturally want to help. So we collect food and raise funds in order to help and demonstrate the truth of the central message of Christianity - - love one another. This is a simple act of living out our faith. We share in some small way what we have, with those who have less. In doing so, we cause the poor to see our good works and give glory and praise to God. Saint Matthew expressed it: You are the light of the world. Men do not light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket. They set it on a stand where it gives light to all In the same way, your light must shine before all men So that they may see your good works And give praise and glory to your heavenly Father. The role of the Vincentian is to provide loving and compassionate interest in individuals. If that interest calls for food, clothing or other assistance, so be it. However, it is in loving where the contact with Christ emerges. That contact with Christ is what separates the Society of St. Vincent de Paul from just another social agency.
