2 Please join us for Mass on the weekend of July for the celebration of our Patronal Feast day! Who is St Daniel the Prophet? The hero and traditional author of the book of the Old Testament which bears his name. At about 16 years of age he was taken captive by the army of Nebuchadnezzar, and carried away into the Babylonian captivity. He was educated for the service of the court. His wonderful wisdom was made manifest to the king when he not only recalled a forgotten dream, but also explained its mysterious meaning. Thus he rose to a position of honor and confidence. In this lofty station he remained under Nebuchadnezzar s successors. In the times of King Belshazzar he deciphered the hand-writing on the wall, and was cast into the lion s den for the first time. Under the ruler called Darius the Mede in our present text, he received the vision of the seventy weeks, announcing the death of the Messiah. In the third year of Cyrus he foretold the course of earthly empires till the end of time. When the 70 years of captivity were over and many of the Jews returned to their fatherland, he remained in the land of exile. A PLENARY INDULGENCE is granted to those who devoutly visit the parochial church on its titular feast. Besides fulfilling the conditions listed below in numbers 3 and 4 of The Gift of the Indulgence, while visiting the church of St Daniel the Prophet on its titular feast it is required that one Our Father and the Creed be recited. Excerpts from The Gift of the Indulgence Issued by the APOSTOLIC PENITENTIARY General Remarks on Indulgences 1. This is how an indulgence is defined in the Code of Canon Law (can. 992) and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 1471): "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints". 2. In general, the gaining of indulgences requires certain prescribed conditions (below, nn. 3, 4), and the performance of certain prescribed works. 3. To gain indulgences, whether plenary or partial, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. 4. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; have sacramentally confessed their sins; receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. 5. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence. 6. For the sake of those legitimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the conditions required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin). 7. Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth. --from the Apostolic Penitentiary website. The Apostolic Penitentiary is the oldest dicastery of the Holy See. Amongst its many duties the Penitentiary handles everything related to the granting and use of indulgences, with the exception of the doctrinal aspect of indulgences themselves, which is the competence of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Dicastery promotes the ancient practice of indulgences in a special manner, since they are intimately bound to the forgiveness received in the Sacrament of Penance and are an expression of the full gift of the God s mercy. 2

St. Daniel the Prophet Parishioners Know Someone Who Needs Prayers There are many times in our lives when we come across someone who could use extra prayers especially in these difficult times. As Catholics we know that the most perfect prayer is the Mass and no other prayer that we say would benefit them as much. Consider having a Mass said for your loved ones, living or deceased. Simply come to the office to pick from many available dates and Mass times. There is a suggested donation of $10 for each Mass intention that you request. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) RCIA RCIA or Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is a process for people who want to know more about the faith professed in the Catholic Church, and for those who wish to receive the sacraments of initiation, namely Baptism, Confirmation and Communion. The program is also for those who want to be accepted into full communion with the Catholic Church or who wish to convert to the Catholic Church. Sanctuary Renovation Update!! Dear Fellow Parishioners, Praised be the name of Jesus! I m writing to inform you that the latest phase of our sanctuary renovation is fully funded.

6 Sanctuary Renovation Update!! Dear Fellow Parishioners, Praised be the name of Jesus! I m writing to inform you that the latest phase of our sanctuary renovation is fully funded. The response to my letter sent out on March 1, 2013 was swift and overwhelmingly positive. Following in the footsteps of generations of faithful going back to the early house churches of the 1 st century, patrons of sacred art have come forward from all segments of our parish family to sponsor the cost of the molding and alto-relief sculptures. You are still able to view a rendering of the project and sample sculptures in the narthex of our church. An initial payment has been sent to Fernando Girón, the artist executing this commission, in order for him to secure the wood and other materials which will be used to carve and adorn the pieces. Fernando estimates that the project will take a year to complete. Over the next several months I will be calling the patrons sponsoring this project to select the location of their respective sculpture(s). I will be calling patrons in the order their sponsorships were received. If you haven t already done so, I encourage you to visit our website ( where you will find a link to useful information on the role of sacred beauty in the Church and the New Evangelization. Striving to give all the glory to God the source from which all that is beautiful finds its origin, may this project help all who enter our church to grow in their sense of awe, praise and thanksgiving as we celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass, celebrate the other sacraments, and spend time in personal prayer.
