RELICS OF THE PASSION DIVINE MERCY FOR WORLD PEACE Please join us at 9:00 a.m., after the 8:30 a.m. Mass, to pray the Divine Mercy for world peace. Only through Jesus, with prayer, can peace be achieved. BIBLE STUDY GROUP Our parish s Bible Study group meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the Msgr. Hannifin Library next to Dillon Hall. All parishioners are most welcome to join us for in-depth discussions of the Bible. For more specifics, please call Mary Ellen at (845) In alignment with the Holy Father s declaration of a Year of Mercy, we are pleased to present a unique opportunity for our community to discover the meaning of God s Mercy, as given to us via His Passion. The Relics of the Passion program is being brought to us as part of a special nationwide tour by the Apostolate for Holy Relics. The holy and sacred objects that they have brought here for us are something that most of us would only have a once in a lifetime opportunity to see once when visiting Rome or the Holy Land. Please join us for this special program that highlights a collection of rare relics from the Passion of our Lord from the Last Supper to the Resurrection, with prayer, music, reflection, and an opportunity for personal veneration. The program will be held here at St. Columbanus Church on July 25, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. The program will also be given in English/ Spanish at Church of the Assumption in Peekskill on July 27, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4 OUR LADY OF FATIMA STATUE We continue with the next installment of the letter by ROBERT CARDINAL SARAH, from Guinea is Prefect of the Congregation for the Divine Worship on the Mass: Silence is not a virtue, noise is not a sin, it is true, says Thomas Merton, but the turmoil and confusion and constant noise of modern society [or of some African Eucharistic liturgies] are the expression of the ambiance of its greatest sins its godlessness, its despair. A world of propaganda, of endless argument, vituperation, criticism, or simply of chatter, is a world without anything to live for. Mass becomes racket and confusion; prayers an exterior or interior noise (Thomas Merton, The Sign of Jonas [San Diego: Harcourt, Inc., 1953, 1981], passim). We run the real risk of leaving no room for God in our celebrations, falling into the temptation of the Israelites in the desert. They sought to create a cult of worship limited to their own measure and reach, and let us not forget that they ended up prostrate before the idol of the golden calf. There are to be periods of silence in the Mass, e.g. after the homily, after receiving Holy Communion, but these need to be added by the priest. However, the Traditional Latin Mass has an advantage in that times of quiet and silence are woven throughout the very fabric of the Mass itself. Thus there is an opportunity to read and meditate on the prayers of the Mass and so become more deeply drawn into the mystery that is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and so accomplish the active participation spoken of by the Council. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo Next year is the 100th anniversary of the Blessed Mother s apparition to the 3 children at Fatima. At that time, Our Lady told the children to pray the Rosary daily and offer sacrifices for sinners. If her requests were fulfilled, the war would end and sinners would be converted. St. Columbanus Parish has a statute of the Pilgrim Virgin, Our Lady of Fatima. We hope you and your family will open your hearts and welcome the statue into your home to pray the Rosary with family and friends.
