There are so many ways of doing God s work by helping our fellow man and this is one very important and rewarding way. HELP A GRANDMOTHER Grandmother raising two granddaughters; one 2 year old and one 9 month old in her own home needs a variety of items to make life easier: diapers sizes 5&6, baby wipes, enfamil formula, baby food, age specific toys for both, for the 9 month old undershirts, clothes and a walker with seat and tray and last a sandbox and kiddie pool. 4 JULY 22, 2018 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH #481/PAGE 4 ~PASTOR S NOTES~ I want to thank the Knights for the excellent repair work on the back outside wall of the Martyrs Church. Interior wooden beams and exterior boards needed to be replaced due to termite and water damage. Donating their time and labor the Knights did a truly professional job and saved the parish thousands of dollars. The back of St. Columbanus parking area will undergo some landscaping to make the area more attractive and clean. There will be many other necessary projects that we will need to do. We will do this in conjunction with a new fund raising campaign from the archdiocese we will begin in the fall. There will be more information to come. Thanks to all of our parishioners who contributed to the Good Counsel Homes Baby Bottle Project. We raised over $4,330! We should also pray that President Trump s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh will be approved and that he will be a proponent for protecting the life of the innocent unborn. As I wrote last week we will be changing our Mass schedule in order to ensure that both of our parish churches will be able to function in the future. Forty and more years ago our archdiocese would ordain 40 men EACH year. Now we are down to a handful. There used to be four, five or even six priests in a parish. If a priest wanted to be a pastor he would have to wait 25 years before an opening would occur. Now men are just a few years ordained before becoming pastors. In the past there would be a lot of Masses and churches would be full at each Mass. I am told that at the Martyrs, years ago, the church would be full and people would be out the back door all the way to the street. (Incidentally, the Friars of Graymoor would say Mass at the Martyrs.) This is not the case today. We have three priests at our parish, Msgr. Keenan who is over 80 years old. (May he be blessed with many more years of good health and faithful service.) I am still recovering from cancer that may return at any time. We also have an international priest, Fr. Edwin. At first we were not going to be given a priest to replace Fr. Paul, but I was able to persuade the archdiocese to give us another priest. In the past we used to have one of the friars from Graymoor help out on weekend Masses. But some of the friars have died, others are old or infirm, and they are not getting vocations so they are unable to help anymore. If I had been unable to get Fr. Edwin we would have just two priests for seven weekend Masses at the two churches. Our Masses are not well attended so to make sure St. Columbanus and the Martyrs continue I am cutting back one Mass at each church. Besides Assumption in Peekskill, St. Columbanus was the only other Catholic Church in the immediate area when founded in Now there are two other nearby parishes and so the number of people within our parish boundaries is limited. The church in Cortlandt Manor has a capacity for over 750 people. It doesn t make much sense to have several Masses where fewer than only one or two hundred people attend. Almost everyone who goes to Mass on Sunday could fit into one Mass at both St. Columbanus and the Martyrs, yet we are still offering six Masses every weekend. I am confident that God will provide vocations, but He won t unless the laity and the hierarchy live the fullness of the faith. Even if 100 new men joined the seminary tomorrow, it would be at least six years before any of them would be ordained. Sadly, more priests die each year than are ordained. I know there will be criticism but the change is in the best interest of our parish. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. (Mt. 5:11) In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo

5 JULY 22, 2018 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH _ #481/PAGE 5 JAN PEEK SHELTER NEEDS HELP St. Columbanus provides a dinner on the first Saturday of each month for the residents of the Jan Peek Shelter. The same handful of parishioners has been participating, so we re hoping to get a few new volunteers willing to lend a helping hand. This opportunity consists of cooking dinner for approximately 20 people once a year. Our current need is especially for the months of August through November. If you cannot cook the entire meal, perhaps you could prepare one course and have friends prepare other courses. Please call Jeni Shutrick-Vitiello at for more information or to sign up.
