The stark beauty of Lent and for us in New England this year lots of snow and cold leads into the journey of Holy Week and bursts in the joy of resurrection on Easter Day. That joy permeates Eastertide, the season of Easter of which we are in the midst. A new creation, renewed life of faith and community, and growing light are prominent symbols of this season. Forsythia, azalea and daffodil bloom, creation groans and sings with newness of the spring season. And then half way around the world the earth shifts in Nepal, and 10,000 perish. And then simmering tension erupts in the aftermath of another death of a black man in police custody in Baltimore. And then in Marblehead an urgent and needed conversation ensues over the concern over a debilitating illness of a loved one; news is received of a tragic accident of a young man; cries of brokenness and loss and isolation are heard. The disciples world was turned upside down, inside out with the death of Jesus. It must have felt like the starkness of the darkest of winter days. And then into the weight of their unrest and grief and fear, the Word of God was present. Peace be with you, the risen Christ said according to the Gospel of John. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And he breathed on them. Receive the Holy Spirit, he said. Their spirits were renewed, and new life flowed through the community. This spirit and this life is offered to each of us as well. It strengthens us in our own weaknesses to be witnesses to and vessels of reconciliation and grace to those in need. For God s love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (I Cor. 13:7) The liturgical calendar reminds us that forty days after his resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven, from whence he shall come again. Fifty days after his resurrection, per Jesus instruction, the disciples gathered in Jerusalem. There they received (perhaps again!) the power of the Holy Spirit. We might say the mission and work of Christ passed officially to his church and its members. God s spirit, God s love, and the light of Christ are as vibrant today as on that Day of Pentecost. We are sent forth in them into a new creation, renewed community and hope-filled light. Fr. Andrew.

3 St. Michael s Newsletter May 2015 Page Three Church School & Youth April Happenings In Church School in April, children in our Godly Play group learned about Jesus death and Resurrection, they learned the religious meaning behind Easter Eggs, and had an overview lesson on the many books in the Bible. Our Weaving God s Promises Group also learned about Jesus death and Resurrection, and continued in the Bible to learn about Jesus appearance to his Disciples, and the story of Doubting Thomas. In April we celebrated Holy week on Maundy Thursday, April 2nd, with a Service at 7:30pm featuring music from our Youth Choir! It was a beautiful service enjoyed by all. On Good Friday, April 3rd we all enjoyed a delicious lunch of homemade chicken and rice soup and a tasty assortment of sandwiches and cookies. Thank you so much to Sue Cool and Kelley Callahan for making our scrumptious treats, and to Gillian Petty for heating, and setting up the meal and having it ready for our group. After lunch, we gathered in the church for Stations of the Cross with a group of over 30 people! We continued Holy week observances with the beautiful Easter Vigil on April 4th and Easter Sunday Services on April 5th. Supper Club Supper Club had its year-end celebration on Monday, April 6th, at Fen Yang House on Atlantic Avenue in Marblehead. We looked back on a terrific year, recognized those who are moving on to our High School service group, and welcomed the new members who will be joining Supper Club in the fall. Thank you so much to Octavia Moniz for organizing and sponsoring our celebration! St. Michael s youth gather for their year-end celebration. Outreach Rev. Holly Hartman, a Diocesan appointed deacon for global mission partnerships, spoke to us at St. Michael s on Sunday, April 19th after the 10 o clock service. Holly had just returned from a partnership trip to Haiti and had a lot to share with us. She also spoke about the Mission Tithe Matching Grant program offered by the diocese. 300th Anniversary Special Worship Service On Sunday, April 26th we held the last in our series of historic church services. Over the past year, we had Continued on page 4.

4 St. Michael s Newsletter May 2015 Page Four Church School continued greatly enjoyed seeing what services here at St. Michael s looked like through the centuries. This service gave us the chance to experience a 4th Century Worship Service, looking ahead to the future. May Highlights In May, both Church School Groups will be learning about the 10 Commandments through stories and lessons appropriate for their age group. We will also be participating in the many annual spring traditions listed on the next page. Children s Chapel May 3rd We will begin the month with a Children s Chapel service officiated by Father Andrew and our Seminarian Eric Fialho on May 3rd at 9:30am. Please arrive on time so that you don t miss any of it! Church school will follow. Intergenerational Service May 10th The Intergenerational Service will be held on Sunday, May 10th. Children will be given a special role to play in the service. Please me at kelley@stmichaels1714.org if you can make the commitment to attend, and I will help your child choose a role and prepare for the service. On that day we will not meet at the Davenport House. Instead we will meet in the Parish Hall just before 10 am to go over any logistics or last minute details. Rogation Sunday May 17th We plan to celebrate Rogation Sunday with our customary planting of flowers. This year with construction completed, we will be able to plant on both the Pleasant and Summer Street sides. Please look for our Sign-Up Genius to sign up to donate the flowers, or to volunteer to help with the planting on that day. June 7th -Year End Breakfast Celebration and Registration On our last day, Sunday June 7th, we will be gathering all church school families for an end of the year breakfast celebration in the Chapter room! We plan for parents and children to arrive by 9:30 and for all to enjoy some breakfast treats while parents fill out registration forms for the fall. This will help us to get a jump on next year s programming. By 10 o clock parents should head into services, while activities and fun continue for the children. Hopefully the weather will be nice and we can enjoy our outdoor space, otherwise we will continue with activities in the Chapter room. Children will join the 10 o clock service at our usual time. Please look for a Sign-Up Genius coming soon, to donate foods for our celebration. **** Volunteers Needed**** On June 7th we would like to register at least 6 adults to commit to helping in church school for the next school year. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU WOULD BE COMMITTED TO HELPING EVERY WEEK. In fact, during much of the winter we will only need two helpers, so four people would have each week off. This year there have been 6 dedicated volunteers who have helped at church school, but some of those volunteers are parents who have children that will be moving on next year, and we will need new people to help. By registering at least six people for the year, volunteers can choose ahead of time the weeks that are most convenient for them, and this way I can get any preparatory information to the volunteer ahead of time. In this format no one helper would be overloaded and all would be able to attend full services regularly. Even those who ski on weekends in winter would be able to sign up and volunteer for fall and spring dates. It is also best for the children to have familiarity with their teachers. Also, should a conflict arise, a volunteer could look at our schedule and swap with another church school helper. You do not need to be a teacher to volunteer! In fact one role each week is that of Activity Leader. This person does not need to prepare in advance. They simply help greet children, and facilitate our story, craft, and snack time. They are the extra set of hands to pour juice, or help a child with their gluing, or escort someone to the bathroom, etc. Lastly, I think that I may be able to speak for those who have volunteered, that it is very rewarding to help St. Michael s church in this way. We have a wonderful group of children and it is inspiring to be part of their spiritual, intellectual, and social growth, and it is also a lot of fun! Please consider this opportunity to give back to our parish and the children. We will have sign-ups for Church School volunteers at our June 7th year end celebration and registration day. -Kelley Howells. Congratulations Randolph & Alexandra Howie Stark are pleased to announce the birth of a daughter, Colette Leung Stark, in New York on April 9. Married at St. Michael's in 2011, the couple have a 2 year old son, Henry Howie Stark. Grandparents are Marian and Rob Howie.

5 St. Michael s Newsletter May 2015 Page Five Edwin B. Chase, Rector, Edwin Bailey Chase, born in Newburyport to Capt. Bailey Chase and Mary S. Granger, was called to St. Michael s from Lewes, Delaware, in March He immediately focused on the Sunday School, increasing numbers 50% in his first year. Chase credits the ladies of the congregation with much that had been accomplished. Noting a lamentable indifference to, and neglect of, religious obligations by the men he set up a series of lectures for young men. When the 3rd group of Marblehead men was organized in August 1861 to serve in the Civil War, Chase held a service for them and distributed a copy of the Book of Common Prayer to each. Chase s first parochial report to the diocese in 1861 also noted: Our venerable church, the oldest in the Diocese, erected about 1714, although endeared by pleasant associations to a few, is, by its inconvenient location, and unprepossessing exterior, a great hindrance to the growth of the Parish. With the return of peace and prosperity to our land, which may God speedily bring to pass, it is hoped that an effort will be made to erect a new and substantial church in a more desirable locality. This statement might have led to an early dismissal, but one of the few was Mrs. Eunice Hooper who financed repairs to the church in the summer of This was just in time for Chase s marriage in October 1862 to Mary Emory Page of New York. In 1863 the church now gives promise of being capable of doing as good service in the next century as in the past. A stone font was added by 1863, all in time for St. Michael s 150th anniversary in 1864 when former rector J. B. Richmond published his Historical Sketch of St. Michael s. By 1865 a new altar had been added to the chancel along with chestnut chairs designed by architect Alexander R. Esty of Boston. The Rev. Edwin B. Chase. Date unknown. Photo: St. Michael s Archives. In spring 1866 the Rev. Edwin Chase submitted his resignation and the Vestry reluctantly accepted. Chase went on to St. Peter s in Cambridge, Mass., which was just completing its new building. His rectorship at St. Peter s was described as a term of nearly uninterrupted tranquility and prosperity when the strict simplicity of low church forms, gradually gave place to the richer and fuller ritual of what we may perhaps properly term the English, or Cathedral system. (Cambridge Chronicle, March 26, 1887). Chase served until his resignation in 1874 due to illness and died of consumption the next year at age 41. When St. Michael s was renovated in 1888 a silver vase was given in his memory. This vase is still used regularly. Chase came from an extended family of Episcopal priests with an uncle, the Rev. Moses B. Chase, naval chaplain in Cambridge, and at least two Newburyport kinsmen named Robert. The Rev. Robert Green Chase was ordained with Edwin on Dec. 21, 1855 by high churchman George Washington Doane, Bishop of New Jersey, and founder of Burlington College, the seminary both attended. Robert Green Chase served in Philadelphia until his death in The Rev. Robert F. Chase was ordained deacon by Doane the year before Edwin and served at St. James, Amesbury, Mass., and as the first rector of Calvary Church, Danvers Eventually Robert F. Chase moved to Philadelphia where he died in Convention records have a Rev. R. F. Chase also in Philadelphia Frances Stith Nilsson, Historic Church Committee Chase s years at St. Michael s had its ups and downs beginning with the outbreak of the Civil War. Thomas Evans died suddenly in August 1861, a St. Michael s warden since Evans left a bequest of $2000 which would come to St. Michael in 1872 and become its first endowed fund. At Evans s death, Ezekial Russell became warden serving 30 years. In October 1863, Chase buried their first child who died of lung disease at age 3 months; the Vestry gave Chase a 3-month vacation to recover. Despite the ending of the Civil War and the return of Marblehead men, Chase notes in 1865 Serious and much to be regretted losses by removals have occurred, while there has been no increase to the population of the Town, and but little St. Michael s interior abut 1870 with stone font, altar and chestnut increase to the number of worshippers in the Church. chairs. Columns appear to be marbleized, as done by Bartoll in 1856.

Stewards of the Month: Diane Christian About ten years ago when Diane was attending Old North, she decided to come with Lynn Bragdon to a service at St. Michael s. And she found a church that felt like home: I like a Eucharist centered service and I loved the traditionalism and historical legacy of St. Michael s. Now she is the Assistant Treasurer and serves on the Investment Committee. She has taught Sunday school, and worked with the Food Pantry, the Mitten Tree, and the Lobster Luncheon. I love working with children and plan to do more with the Sunday school, Diane says. Her new favorite memory at St. Michael s was watching the steeple go back up this summer. It was a historic moment, she says. Other special memories include the Christmas pageants and her daughter Julia s first communion. Professionally Diane has been an investment advisor, celebrating her 30th anniversary in the field this year. Her husband Mike has a commercial insurance company. Their Michael, Julia, Kelly and Diane Christian. youngest child is Julia who is a junior at Veterans Memorial. She plays violin, dances, and skis. She has grown up at St. Michael s, starting with attending the nursery that used to be in the Davenport House, says her mother. Diane has also three grown stepchildren. Tommy is a family therapist with a doctorate in comparative religion while Jenn is in South Africa with the State Department, and Kelly is an art therapist in Boston with a degree from Lesley College. When we have the chance, we love to travel, says Diane. We have family all over the place, especially in California. She recalls fondly the time she and Jenn both took a semester in England at Bath University in Bath. The spiritual is a big part of my life, says the Boston College graduate. And I love the energy of St. Michael s. - Marilyn Day, for an ongoing series of profiles of St. Michael s parishioners
