1 THE FEAST OF ALL SOULS the holy eucharist november 14, 2011 at seven thirty pm washington national cathedral The Reverend Canon Mary Sulerud, celebrant The Reverend Canon Jan Cope, gospeller The Reverend Gina Gilland Campbell, assistant The Reverend Canon Ralph Godsall, homilist The Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys organ voluntary Prélude funèbre, Op. 4 Louis Vierne ( ) The Entrance Rite introit and kyrie Sung by the choir. Gabriel Fauré ( ) Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion, et tibi redetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam: ad te omnis caro veniet. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. A hymn befits thee, O God in Zion, and to thee a vow shall be fulfilled in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer, for unto thee all flesh shall come. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. the collect for the departed The people sing their responses. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, the Maker and Redeemer of all believers: Grant to the faithful departed the unsearchable benefits of the passion of your Son; that on the day of his appearing they may be manifested as your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

2 The Word of God The people are seated. first lesson lamentations 3:22 26, The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in him. The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. For the Lord will not reject forever. Although he causes grief, he will have compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love; for he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. psalm 130 Sung by the choir. tone III Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? For there is forgiveness with you; therefore you shall be feared. I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; With him there is plenteous redemption, and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. second lesson 1 Corinthians 15:50 58 What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people stand to sing and remain standing through the Gospel. hymn 526 Let saints on earth in concert sing Dundee the gospel The people sing their responses. John 5:24 27 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life. Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who 2

3 hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated. homily canon Godsall A brief period of silence is observed for reflection on the homily. pie jesu Sung by the choir. G. Fauré Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis requiem; dona eis sempiternam requiem. Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest, rest everlasting. The people stand. the prayers of the people For our sisters and brothers, let us pray to our Lord Jesus Christ who said, I am Resurrection, and I am Life. Lord, you consoled Martha and Mary in their distress; draw near to us who mourn, and dry the tears of those who weep. You wept at the grave of Lazarus, your friend; comfort us in our sorrow. You raised the dead to life; give to our brothers and sisters eternal life. Your promised paradise to the thief who repented; bring our sisters and brothers to the joys of heaven. Our brothers and sisters were washed in Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit; give them fellowship with all your saints. Our sisters and brothers were nourished with your Body and Blood; grant them a place at the table in your heavenly kingdom. Comfort us in our sorrows at the death of our brothers and sisters; let our faith be our consolation, and eternal life our hope. Gracious God, we pray to you for our sisters and brothers, and for all those whom we love but see no longer. Here the necrology is read. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them; and may the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. hymn 358 Christ the Victorius Russia the peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace. 3

Hostias et preces tibi, Domine, laudis offerimus; tu suscipe pro animabus illis quarum hodie memoriam facimus; fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam, quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini ejus. Amen. Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, liberate the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the deep pit. Deliver them from the lion s mouth; let not hell swallow them up, let them not fall into darkness. Sacrifices and prayers of praise, O Lord, we offer to thee. Receive them, Lord on behalf of those souls we commemorate this day. Grant them, O Lord, to pass from death unto life, which once thou promised to Abraham and to his seed. Recalling Christ s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. 4

May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord, in the company of thy saints forever and ever; for thou art merciful. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. the invitation to communion ministration of communion All who seek God and a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Eat the bread and then drink from the cup when it is offered to you. If you wish to receive a blessing rather than receive communion, cross your arms over your chest this will alert the priest to your desire to be blessed. 5

6 libera me Sung by the choir. Libera me, Domine, libera. Deliver me, O Lord, from death eternal, on that dreadful day: when the heavens and the earth shall quake, when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire. I am seized by trembling, and I fear until the judgment should come, and I also dread the coming wrath. O that day, day of wrath, day of calamity and misery, momentous day, and exceedingly bitter. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Deliver me, O Lord, deliver me. postcommunion prayer The people stand and pray. Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ, and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet.
