2 ST. JOSEPH PARISH Fr Jim s Jottings The first few days of this week I will be a part of what are called Clergy Days in Manitowoc. Each year these days are set aside for the priests and administrators of parishes to be together with our Bishop. This year s meeting will focus on a Diocesan program called Disciples on the Way. We will have presentations and discussions on discipleship formation. During this next year the program hopes to focus on priests, pastoral leaders and the Diocesan Curia learning more deeply about what discipleship is. After this year there is a plan to implement this program in all of our parishes. I ask for your prayers that our time together will help us become committed to the program and be willing participants. I don t know if you know this, but the clergy can be a challenging group to get together and ask to buy into a program. So, ask God s blessing on all of us. RCIA Candidates It s that time of the year when we begin a number of programs. One of them is our RCIA program for those interested in our Catholic faith. We already have a couple of people who are interested in learning more about our faith. So, please spread the word to anyone you know that might want to look at joining our Catholic Church. Deacon Mark will be organizing this program that will begin in early October. Preparing for Construction to BEGIN! Last Thursday a ground breaking ceremony took place for the construction of the Exhibition Center across the street. All the fencing that surrounds the former parking lot signals lots of construction to take place over the next year. With the closing of the parking lot across the street, some of us have to scramble for a new parking spot. With that in mind, we re asking that we be considerate of the elderly and handicapped. If you can park somewhere other than our east and west parking lots, please do so. There are about 100 parking spots on our two lots. If at least two people are in every car, we can accommodate 200 people in our own lots. That means another 200 folks have to find spots on the street or on the County lot, Wells Fargo Bank, McGuiness Irish Pub, or the Fox River House. If you can walk an extra block or so, give thanks to God for the opportunity to let someone else park closer to church. Congratulations to Our Weekly Calendar Raffle Winners! September 18: Joan Navickas - $25.00 September 19: Abe Qastin - $25.00 September 20: Emily Mignon - $25.00 September 21: Carla Baier - $25.00 September 22: Mary Schulz - $25.00 September 23: IPRF (Gift) - $25.00 Please Pray for Please pray for all parishioners who are ill: Dallas Curtis, Deacon CF Dedman Please also remember our nursing home residents and shut-ins. Please remember to pray for our parishioners or family members of our parishioners who have died: Ed Koleske, Jr Rosary Before Mass during October Beginning next weekend we will pray the rosary a half hour before each Mass in honor of our Blessed Mother. Try and join us in praying for the special needs that are in our hearts. If you would be interested in leading the rosary, give Fr Jim a call at Thanks. How to Pray the Rosary Using beads to count prayers is an ancient tradition, and not unique to the Catholic faith. The rosary as we know it today has evolved over time from its original loop of fifty beads marked out three times (to account for 150 prayers representing all the psalms) to its present configuration of five decades with some additional prayers. The rosary is begun by reciting the Apostles' Creed while holding the cross that hangs from the loop. The Lord's Prayer is prayed on the first bead on the way up from the cross to the loop joiner. Then three Hail Mary's are prayed on the next three beads (often interpreted as prayers for an increase of faith, hope, and charity), followed by a Glory Be. Another Lord's Prayer opens the first decade, which continues with ten Hail Marys, and concludes with a Glory Be, prayed while holding the chain between the final Hail Mary of the decade and the next bead for the Lord's Prayer. The prayer and meditation of the five decades is directed to one of the mysteries of which there are four sets (Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous). There are booklets that offer scriptural mediations for each of the beads as well, providing an opportunity to enrich this traditional prayer with excerpts from the word of God. SCRIP UPDATE You can give St. Joe s extra cash without spending more money. The SCRIP program gives us a check for a percentage of the amount purchased. Help us by purchasing your Gift Cards this weekend or October 15/16. Beginning November 5/6, SCRIP is available every weekend. Thanks.

September 29, 2016 with Bishop Robert Morneau ****** Forgiveness God s Mercy Given to Sinners Compassion God s Mercy Given to the Suffering In this Year of Mercy we do well to reflect upon God s mercy and how that mercy is manifest in our lives. When we are suffering (physically, morally spiritually), God s mercy comes to us in the form of compassion. When we sin and rupture relationships, God s mercy comes to us in the form of forgiveness. Our God is a God of mercy and love. Made to God s image and likeness, we are to be agents of that mercy and love. WWDWWD (Why We Do What We Do) For the next few months this article will appear in our weekly bulletin. It will look at what we do at St Joe s and, hopefully, offer an explanation that s especially helpful for our new members. Why don t Catholics take their coats off in church? That s a fair question and there must be a logical answer to it. If you go to non-catholic churches they have coat racks and most of the congregations leave their coats there during services. Perhaps you can think of a reason. Let us know by putting your thoughts on paper and dropping it into the collection basket next weekend. We ll publish the answers we get. Mark Your Calendar! Saturday October 29 Last Downtown Farmer s Market of the Summer St. Joe s will have a display area at the Farmers Market as part of our Jubilee year celebration. Some of our youth will be there to collect whatever food items or cash you might want to give to the St Joe s Food Pantry. Look for them near the Houdini Plaza. Please come and make this the best collection of the summer. And thanks to all those who are helping to make this a successful outreach of the parish. Please Support our Sponsor of the Week!
