2 S T. J O S E P H P A R I S H, A P P L E T O N, W I Fr Jim s Jottings This weekend begins our annual Catholic Schools Week. The week provides the opportunity to thank you for your support of the St Francis Xavier Catholic School System. It also offers the chance to celebrate and promote the many highlights of our schools. So, thanks to the parishioners of St Joe s for their generous financial support over the years. The SFX School System has three sources of revenue tuition, parish subsidies, and fundraising. All three are essential to maintaining the system. Our parish contributes over $300,000 each year. Together our eight Appleton parishes contribute a total of $2,900,000 towards the cost of the system. Appleton is blessed to have a Catholic School System. Many communities have closed their schools because of finances and low enrollment. I hope and pray that won t happen here. Once a system is closed, it is next to impossible to revive it. Thanks also to the parents of our SFX School system. Tuition costs demand a lot of financial sacrifices for them. I know parents who don t take expensive vacations and drive older cars so their kids can go to a Catholic school. You continue the example of dedication and generosity given by the hundreds of nuns who used to teach for practically nothing. God bless and reward them and all of you parents. I wish more of our parents would look seriously at sending their children to our school system. We can teach and celebrate our Catholic faith there every day of the week. God is welcome in our schools. Christian values are expected and our quality education is superior. If any family wants to send their children to our system but needs some financial help, please contact me ( ). St Joe s has the ability to help families who need a boost. I want to make these funds available. Right now there are about 100 of our children in the system. I wish that number were 125, if not more. Congratulations to everyone connected to this week s celebration of Catholic Schools Week! Please Pray For... Please pray for all our parishioners who are ill: Lorna Davel, Joe Strick, Tom Belonger, Tom Harp, Lisa Vander Maazen, Tom Nygard, Kay Remme, Fern Baisden, Ruth West Please also remember our nursing home residents and shut-ins. Please remember to pray for our parishioners or family members of our parishioners who have died: Ken Schuh (father of Dorothy Voster) FEBRUARY Holy Hour Our Holy Hour for the month of February will be next Sunday, Feb 1 st following the 10:00 am Mass. Can you come and pray with us before the Blessed Sacrament for an hour or however long you can stay? Bishop Ricken has asked every parish to provide a monthly Holy Hour. In November we did it on the first Friday after our 12:05 Mass. Last month it was offered on the first Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. And this month it will be after our Sunday Mass. After next Sunday, we will decide what the best day and time is for this monthly opportunity and put it in our parish calendar. STEWARDSHIP of TREASURE We continue to ask parishioners to help us with our budgeting for 2015 by filling out a Financial Stewardship Commitment form. In early December a letter was sent to every parishioner asking if you could indicate what you thought you could give the parish in Many of you have already returned your form. Thank you! If you have not done so yet, we would still be grateful to receive it Pictorial Directory THANK YOU! This past week we completed the picture taking for our directory! Thank you to everyone who took the time to schedule an appointment and get their picture taken. There was a great attitude shown by everyone by being on time and flashing some outstanding smiles. The reward of cookies was a small way of saying thanks for a very successful effort. It all began in early November (three months ago). Thanks to our Pictorial Directory Committee: Annette Hovie, Kathy Helf, Judy Pocan, and Barb Mauthe. They have been incredibly generous with their time and dedication. They are now putting together the additional pages that will feature photos of parish activities. In three weeks we hope to ship off the finished copy to the printer. We have a promise that the directories will be back here sometime in May. Pick Up Your Complimentary Photos Many parishioners asked that their free 8 x 10 photo be sent to our parish office. PLEASE stop in and pick it up at our front desk. Thank you! You were willing to give suggestions, time and effort toward our festivals and parties. You were quick to welcome visitors and friends from out of town. Father, we are grateful that we have had the fortune to know you. You will always have a place in our hearts that no one else will ever fill. May God bless you always! Your family from St Joe s. 3 R D S U N D A Y O F E A S T E R PAST PASTORS of St Joe s Past Pastor # 29 Fr. Roger Zach ( ), Fr. Campion Baer [Co-Pastors] ( ) In 1975 our Co-Pastors were Fr. Roger and Fr. Campion. Interestingly, Fr. Ephrem continued to minister at St. Joe s but was now considered an Associate Pastor! Wonder how difficult that was for him? Fr. Roger and Fr. Campion worked as Co- Pastors for three years. In 1978 Fr. Campion left St Joe s and Fr. Roger became Pastor for another six years. So the experiment of Co-Pastors lasted for only five years. It seems the concept of Co-Pastors was tried in many places but didn t last much longer than it did here. Fr. Campion did a great job here. He was a man of action, yet he weighed well any decision, especially if it meant spending money. His policy was to do it ourselves if it could be done, even if the job was not the most professional. His signs may have lacked artistic talent but they did get the event or occasion promoted. Fr. Campion followed in the footsteps of Fr. Ephrem with his financial wisdom. He helped return the parish from the brink of financial disaster only ten years earlier to a very respected and solvent position. It was in August 1977 that St. Mary and St. Joseph Parishes began to discuss the idea of consolidating their two elementary schools. The plan was approved in April, 1978 under the name of Catholic Central school. The two schools merged and opened for classes in 1979 at the State Street campus. Fr. Campion supervised the changes in the church. During this period the interior to the church was dedicated to Mary and the baptistery in the rear of the church was replaced. The stained glass window behind the altar was once again uncovered. It had been hidden since the turn of the century. The old school was also demolished to make way for the new hotel and convention center. There was some thought given to a Parish Center being built just east of the Friary. That idea was put on hold at the time. Fr. Roger, of course, was deeply involved in all of the above too. And one of the highlights during his time as Pastor was the establishment of the renowned St. Joseph Food Program. It was begun in September, The PARISH NEWSletter of Feb, 1984 had the following tribute to Fr Roger as he left St Joseph Parish. It is with true sorrow that we say Good Bye to you as you leave us to continue your education in the knowledge of God and His ministry. However our sorrow at your leaving is tempered with our gratitude for the wonderful memories you have given us. We remember your warmth toward all of us. You knew us by name and inquired of our family members. You grieved with us in our sorrows. We have seen your tears for our grief; you joined us in prayer for our loved ones. You were always available when we came to you with a problem. The problem became your problem. We no longer suffered alone. [to be continued in first column]
