2 ST. JOSEPH PARISH Fr Jim s Jottings Here are a few thoughts as we come to All Souls Day on Nov. 2. That is a sacred day when we remember and pray for our beloved dead. Next weekend there will be two banners in our sanctuary with the names of those who have died this past year at St Joe s. At the beginning of Mass we will pray for each of them by mentioning their name. In our Catholic tradition, we have always had a respect for the dead. We ve indicated that by having a wake service, celebration of a memorial Mass, and a burial of the remains. Over the last fifty years, there s a disturbing and growing practice of skipping these religious traditions. In reading the obituary column, instead of a family gathering in church they are meeting at the local bar to talk about the deceased! Or at times the family announces that a remembrance will be held at a later date. It s shocking when there is no service for someone who has been a devout Catholic their whole life. Even though the deceased wanted a funeral service, the children choose not to honor those wishes. I get a sense sometimes that the death of a loved one is inconvenient. So to save time and money, people are invited to meet at the cemetery during lunch hour, say a prayer and bury the ashes. Another sad fact is that there is no permanent place where the loved one is buried. Instead his ashes are scattered on the lake where he used to fish or on the mantle in the living room. (God forbid that anyone knock the urn off the mantle and it s smashed on the floor!) Are we becoming less and less respectful of those who die? I am afraid so. However, I am grateful that we pray as a parish for those brother and sisters of our who have died in the Lord this past year. May they rest in peace! Congratulations to Our Weekly Calendar Raffle Winners! October 15: Netania Ebert - $25.00 October 16: Connor Drzewiecki - $25.00 October 17: David Hendricks - $25.00 October 18: Betty Milhaupt - $25.00 October 19: Alex Martin- $25.00 October 20: Estate of Karla Rosenfeldt - $25.00 October 21: Tim Van Handel - $25.00 Please Pray for Today is Priesthood Sunday! For performance times and ticket information, please call or visit Everyday Stewardship I read an interesting article about how tolerance has become a substitute for love. As Christians we often talk about tolerance toward others when truly the call of Jesus Christ is to love others, not simply tolerate them. The truth is tolerance is a lot easier than love. In tolerance, we are asked to give nothing away. It costs us nothing to simply allow people to be who they are, where they are, and stay in the state in which they find themselves. Love requires us to step outside of our comfort zone and to offer a part of ourselves to others. This makes us vulnerable and open to possible pain and discomfort. Those whom we seek to love could take advantage of us. It is easy to see why tolerance seems a bit more popular these days. Jesus could have tolerated the religious hypocrites of his day. He could have tolerated the Romans who oppressed the Jews. He could have simply tolerated the tax collectors, prostitutes, and outcasts of his day. Instead, he loved them. He made himself vulnerable and open to pain. When we look at the cross we see what can be the true price for love. It is easy to see why a policy of tolerance looks more desirable to many.
