2 S T. J O S E P H P A R I S H, A P P L E T O N, W I Fr Jim s Jottings Our Church year comes to a fitting end with our feast of Christ the King today. Pope Pius XI instituted The Feast of Christ the King in 1925 for the universal church in his encyclical Quas Primas. He connected the increasing denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism. At that time many Christians (including Catholics) began to doubt Christ's authority and existence, as well as the Church's power to continue Christ's authority. Pius XI, and the rest of the Christian world, witnessed the rise of non-christian dictatorships in Europe, and saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly leaders. The Feast of Christ the King was instituted during a time when respect for Christ and the Church was waning, when the feast was needed most. Pope Pius hoped the institution of the feast would have various effects. They were: 1. That nations would see that the Church has the right to freedom, and immunity from the state. 2. That leaders and nations would see that they are bound to give respect to Christ. 3. That the faithful would gain strength and courage from the celebration of the feast, as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies. Today, the same distrust of authority exists, although the problem has gotten worse. Individualism has been embraced to such an extreme, that for many, the only authority is the individual self. The idea of Christ as ruler is rejected in such a strongly individualistic system. Also, many balk at the idea of kings and queens, believing them to be antiquated and possibly oppressive. However true these statements might be, these individuals miss the point: Christ's kingship is one of humility and service. Jesus said You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. While Christ is coming to judge the nations, his teachings spell out a kingdom of justice and judgment balanced with radical love, mercy, peace, and forgiveness. When we celebrate Christ as King, we are not celebrating an oppressive ruler, but one willing to die for humanity and whose "loving-kindness endures forever." Mass for Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Day (Nov 26) is coming. We will have a Mass on Thanksgiving Eve at 6:30pm. There will be no Mass on Thanksgiving Day. We invite you to bring a gift of peanut butter and/or jelly for the St Joseph Food Pantry. Most of us will be dining on a delicious turkey dinner the next day. Hopefully we can fill some of the shelves at the pantry with peanut butter and jelly for the holiday season. St Joe s Calendar Raffle We ve begun passing out our raffle calendars in the Great Hall. Every parishioner has an envelope with your name on it. Inside are three raffle calendars. We ask you to buy/sell them as part of a fundraiser for the parish. If you are able to buy/sell more calendars, they are on the radiator in back of church or at the front desk of the office. Many parishioners have generously helped make this our biggest fundraiser. Last year we made almost $20,000! That s outstanding. Our raffle calendars make great gifts for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Jubilee Search Our Jubilee Committee is asking for your help with photos, articles, and items of the history of St Joseph Parish. We have some items here in the parish office, but would be grateful for your willingness to share things you have in your attic. Do you have a class photo of your days at St Joe s school? Perhaps an article of a parish event years ago? We d like to scan the item and return it to you. Please look through some of your past treasures. Just drop them off at the parish office with your name on them and we ll get them back to you. Lauren Ann Arkens is a resident of the Fox Valley area. She is the wife of Tyler, mother of Lily, and daughter of Geralyn and David Hartman. Lauren is in need of a lung transplant and needs the help of her community to make it happen. Transplants are life-saving but very expensive. After years of struggling with cystic fibrosis (CF), a lung transplant is Lauren s only hope for living a normal life. She recently visited her transplant team at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. Lauren needed to hit a specific weight requirement and she did it! This means she is now on the transplant waiting list to receive a double lung transplant. While this is good news, it is also a very stressful and emotional time for Lauren and her family. Her focus now is to remain healthy until the call comes. As sweet and kindhearted as she is, she is also a fighter and Lauren is ready to fight for this but she needs our help. Transplants are life-saving but financially draining. Even with insurance, there will be many medical expenses to be paid out of pocket: co-pays, anti-rejection medications Lauren will need to take for the rest of her life, travel expenses to and from the center for both Lauren and her caregiver, as well as relocation during and after transplant, adding up to more than the Arkens family can handle alone. To help with the financial burden of Lauren s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the North-Central Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please, consider an end-of-year tax deductible contribution. For credit card contributions, please visit and search for Lauren Ann Arkens or call COURTESY ANNOUNCEMENTS: Butter Braids for the Holidays St. Bernadette's Knights of Columbus Council are again selling delicious Butter Braids for the Christmas Season. Solanus Casey First Mass at St. Joe s Is it beyond the realm of possibility that a person who may one day be declared a Saint by the Church once worshipped in our St. Joseph Church? Not at all! The person may well be Fr. Solanus Casey, who has been called the most celebrated member of the Capuchin Order in the U.S.. Fr. Solanus was born at Stillwater, Minnesota. At the age of seventeen, he was full time motorman in Appleton, and held that position from After a series of adventures, he joined the Capuchins in He ran into real trouble at the Capuchin Seminary in Milwaukee. The books were in Latin, and the professors explained them in German! When the time for ordination arrived, the superiors decided to allow Solanus to be ordained, but that he would remain a simple Mass priest. This meant that he could never receive faculties to preach, and that he could not hear confessions. He was ordained on July 24, 1904, and then came to St. Joseph s Church, Appleton, for his First Solemn Mass. His first assignment was in Yonkers, NY. Later, he was transferred to a Capuchin parish in Harlem, and then in 1924, to St Bonaventure, Detroit. He was assigned to help as porter and tailor. During the next twenty one years, Fr. Solanus became the simple porter at St. Bonaventure. People soon flocked to him, as his simple faith and empathic manner touched the hearts of rich and poor alike. He began making his predictions of cures. When people were cured right in front of him, his eyes would fill with tears. He was fully convinced he had nothing to do with the cure, and was utterly amazed at the power and effects of the Mass and of the Seraphic Mass Association. He died on July 31, Just before he slipped into a coma, he said clearly, I give my soul to Jesus Christ. Over 20,000 people passed by his coffin. Presently, his body lies in a burial site in the chapel of St. Bonaventure Monastery, Detroit. Hundreds of people visit his grace each week, placing requests for healing, guidance etc. We are blessed here at St. Joe s with the impressive statue of Fr. Solanus in our prayer garden.
