2 NOTICES Locum Vicars letter I want to begin by thanking everyone for our celebrations last Sunday to mark the Festival of All Saints with All Souls day at both Kooyong and Toorak. Following the service at All Saints many commented that as a parish community we should do this more often with a suggestion that the next one should be to welcome the new vicar in late January or early February before the season of Lent commences. The 8am congregation at St Johns saw a number of people attend to remember their loved ones who had passed away during the year as well as past parishioners and Hilary Roach led worship for those unable to come to Kooyong at 10am at St Johns. I would like to give a special thanks to all at All Saints who prepared the church, cleaned the brass, decorated the Church with flowers, bought the food and then prepared and cooked it for the lunch to follow. There were over 70 of us present for worship with the majority staying for lunch. Plenty of food was provided including delightful fruit salad. The choir was superb and the singing of the congregation enhanced with Choir members robed sitting in the middle, as well as at the side and upfront in the church. The singing contribution of the Urdu- Hindi members was a special treat. If I have missed thanking people please forgive me. Today we welcome to the 10am Sung Eucharist at St Johns the Toorak Sub Branch of the RSL for the Annual Remembrance day observance. We gather to give thanks for all who gave of their life for the sake of others in the Great wars and the many ongoing conflicts that have and continue across the world for the principles of justice and freedom. In today s Gospel, The Sermon on the Mount from Matthew, we are given the ethics of living a just and enriching life for others and ourselves. We are called to be salt and light, to love our enemies, to care for the poor and to act with justice. Such expectations are never easy. They require judgment but Jesus reminds us that this must remain our goal and purpose if we are to truly build God s Kingdom here on earth. Shalom Ray

3 The Revd. Dr. Peter French was ordained deacon and priest in the Diocese of Wangaratta in 1999 and served as Curate at St. John s, Wodonga, as Assistant Priest at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Wangaratta, and then as Chaplain at Trinity College, The University of Melbourne. In 2006 Peter moved with his wife Robyn to Chicago, USA, for Robyn to undertake doctoral studies at the University of Chicago. Joining the Episcopal Church, Peter served as Interim Rector of Messiah-St. Bartholomew, an African- American congregation on the city s south side, and then as Associate Rector of Grace Church, Hinsdale, an affluent 700-member church in the city s west. Since 2008 Peter has served as Chaplain of the Episcopal Church at Princeton University, one of the oldest and largest Episcopal chaplaincies in the United States. At Princeton University he teaches as the Co-Director of The Program on Religion, Diplomacy and International Relations and as the Founding Director of Princeton s Christian-Muslim Dialogue. Peter received his Bachelor of Theology in biblical studies from The Melbourne College of Divinity and his Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Melbourne in history and art history respectively. Peter enjoys windsurfing, modern and contemporary art, electronic dance music, tennis, excellent food and wine, travelling and the company of many friends and family. Peter is married to Robyn Whitaker, a New Testament scholar and Uniting Church minister, who currently lectures at Union Theological Seminary, New York. Peter and Robyn will be moving from Princeton and Manhattan with their flat-coat retriever, Rupert, and are excited to be joining the community at St. John s and All Saints in January Rejoice in the Lord alway - Anon The anonymous sixteenth-century anthem Rejoice in the Lord alway (formerly attributed to John Redford) is a setting of the fourth chapter of St Paul s letter to the Philippians. Its buoyant text has a flip side in that we are enjoined with the very difficult task to rejoice in all things. Justorum animae CV Stanford A hardened protestant, Charles Villiers Stanford never-the-less wrote three wonderful Latin Motets. Justorum is the first motet of the set. This is offered within the Octave of All Souls Day. in memory of all those who have died.

4 NOTICES November Evening Studies, "Pizzas and the Gospels." For 4 Sundays in November commencing today on the 8th November at 5pm The Locum Vicar will be conducting a series of studies on the theme of "Calling in the Gospels, the summons of God in the New Testament. The sessions will explore a number of the vocation stories in the New Testament with an emphasis on Luke's Gospel. Mark the dates in your diary now. More details shortly. Stewardship Currently we are distributing a letter and material for our annual stewardship program. The Church Wardens in conjunction with the Parish Council have decided not to have a full program this year but to ask parishioners to renew their pledges and commitment to St John's and All Saints by completing the forms which have been available in the church over the last couple of weeks, and also sent wherever possible via . We have much to thank God for in our parish life as we continue to pray for a new Incumbent. The locum period provides us with time for reflection and planning for the future. Annual Meeting reports Those responsible for producing reports please submit them to the parish office as soon as possible please. (preferably ed). Annual Parish Meeting The Annual meeting of the parish of St John's Toorak with All Saints' Kooyong is to be held on Sunday the 22nd November at 11.30am following the 10.00am Eucharist. All parishioners are encouraged to attend and only those who are on the Parish Electoral role can vote at the meeting and nominate for office. The call for inclusion on the Electoral role has now closed and the lists are on the Church notice board in the porch entrance. The notice of meeting and agenda is listed on the doors to both churches. Note there will be no elections for Synod Representatives at this time until the Archbishop's mandate is announced in mid Likewise as the parish is currently vacant till the induction of the new vicar in January there is no election for the incumbency committee. Food for Friends The yearly campaign starts at the end of November. St John s will be on duty at Woolworths Toorak Village and Hawksburn. The dates are as follows: Toorak Saturday 28 November. Monday 30 November. Thursday 3 December. Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 December. Hawksburn Saturday 28 November Tuesday 1 December Friday 4 December The roster sign up sheets are now available in the church for those who are able to assist. Please think about how you can assist by giving up just a few hours of your time to collect food for this very worthy cause. Evening Service The Evening Service will take place first Sunday of the month (only) at 5pm in the Angel Chapel, and will include Holy Communion. Gluten free wafers Are available for communion on Sunday morning. Please let the clergy know in advance. Sunday School Meets every second, fourth and fifth Sundays. Children gather in the kinder after the Collect/short prayer in church. For further information please talk to Jane, Clive or the Clergy.
