THE PARISH OF S T JOHN S, TOORAK & ALL SAINTS, KOOYONG DAY OF PENTECOST 15 MAY, 2016

WELCOME A very warm welcome to St John s, Toorak, with All Saints, Kooyong. This is a wonderful and historic parish, founded in 1859, and is a vibrant part of the Toorak, Kooyong and Melbourne community. This parish is part of the Anglican Church of Australia and a member of the global Anglican Communion, which is comprised of some 80 million people. We worship God in the richness of the 1500 year old Anglican tradition, using The Prayer Book for Australia (1995) for all our services of worship. The Parish of St John s and All Saints welcomes everyone to all services and events, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race or background. Our service today can be found here in this printed booklet with hymns found in the red hymnal in each pew, Together in Song. You are also very welcome to use the prayer books, the green Prayer Books for Australia, which are also found in each pew. The scripture readings come from The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible and follow The Australian Lectionary, which sets the readings to be read each week, such that we with Anglicans and other Christians around Australia and across the world are reading together the same parts of scripture, emphasizing our unity as members of the one body of Christ. If you re visiting for the first time do please introduce yourself to a welcomer or member of the clergy, and fill out the brief information form found in each pew and in the foyer so we can stay in touch with you. Welcome to church and God bless you. 2

The 8am service begins with the Introductory Rite, below. The 10am service begins with the processional hymn 411. INTRODUCTORY RITE All stand Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hymn at 8am 411 Filled with the spirit s power The Collect for Purity said together Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Great Commandments 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' Jesus said: 'This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.' Confession The spirit of truth comes to convict of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement. Let us then open our hearts and confess our sins in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we 3

have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in Excelsis said (at 8am) and sung (at 10am service) Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect for Day of Pentecost The celebrant prays the collect, after which all are seated THE LITURGY OF THE WORD The Lesson Acts (readers 8am G. Horwood; 10am S. Maclarn) 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them 4

were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: Aren t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues! 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean? 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, They have had too much wine. 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalter Psalm Lord, how various are your works: in wisdom you have made them all, 5

and the earth is full of your creatures. 27 There is the wide, immeasurable sea: there move living things without number, great and small; 28 There go the ships, to and fro: and there is that Leviathan whom you formed to sport in the deep. 29 These all look to you: to give them their food in due season. 30 When you give it to them, they gather it: when you open your hand they are satisfied with good things. 31 When you hide your face, they are troubled: when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. 32 When you send forth your spirit they are created: and you renew the face of the earth. 33 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever: may the Lord rejoice in his works. 34 If he look upon the earth, it shall tremble: if he but touch the mountains, they shall smoke. 35 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live: I will praise my God while I have any being. 36 May my meditation be pleasing to him: for my joy shall be in the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Epistle Romans (readers 8am V. Randall; 10am G. Gould) 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our 6

spirit that we are God s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn at 10am 403 Come Holy Spirit The Gospel John stand The Holy Gospel according to St John, Chapter 14, commencing at the eighth verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 8 Philip said, Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us. 9 Jesus answered: Don t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? 10 Don t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. 15 If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you for ever 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Sermon The Assistant Curate, The Revd Matthew Connolly 7

At the 8am service the Nicene Creed immediately follows the sermon. Anthem at 10am If ye love me Bob Chilcott (b. 1955) Nicene Creed said together, standing We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People kneeling (Intercessors: 8am V. Randall; 10am J. Horan) The Prayers end with the following Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. 8

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Greeting of Peace standing The peace of the risen Lord be always with you. And also with you. All share with each other the sign of peace, customarily shaking hands and saying, Peace be with you. Offertory Hymn 398 Come down, O Love divine During this hymn a collection will be taken. Prayer for Receiving the Offertory Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER All stand for the Eucharistic Prayer Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 9

The celebrant prays the Great Thanksgiving Prayer until the following Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The celebrant continues to pray the Great Thanksgiving Prayer until the following Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The celebrant continues to pray the Great Thanksgiving Prayer, which ends with the following Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of Bread 10

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Agnus Dei said at 8am, sung at 10am Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Invitation to Communion This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 13 About the Music Today If ye love me. Bob Chilcott (b.1955) sang in the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, both as a treble and as a lay clerk. His harmonic style reflects the wonderful experience of singing with the King's Singers, with whom he performed from 1985 to Veni creator spiritus [chant & versets] The Latin hymn Veni creator spiritus is one of the great hymns of the universal Church. It appeared in liturgical manuscripts dating from the tenth century, and with its petition that the Holy Spirit's gifts descend upon humankind has seen its use for services of Ordination, Consecration of Bishops, the Election of Popes, and the Coronation of Monarchs. Many commentators upon the hymn have noted the strength of its verbs (such as the first stanza's "Come, visit, fill!") and the richness of its Biblical and theological allusion (a wealth of pneumatological doctrine survives in the single word ignis, fire). Even a single stanza of the hymn suffices to demonstrate the richness of its thought. The third four-line stanza, for instance, opens by calling the Holy Spirit a "sevenfold gift," simultaneously referring to Isaiah 11, the Apocalypse, and the numerological perfection of 7; the colourful and evocative title "Forefinger of God's right hand" immediately follows. The stanza's third and fourth lines speak concisely of God's promise of the Spirit's coming and of the most visible effect: He places vibrant speech in human throats, beginning with "He has spoken through the prophets," and culminating in the Pentecost experience of speaking in tongues. A mere 14 words embrace generations of the Holy Spirit's action. - Timothy Dickey 13

This chant is prayed during Communion at 10am alternating with organ versets by Maurice Duruflé, as is the stipulated format. I m Jumping Off a Building for Altitude Shift! Dear Friends, On 27th May I will be abseiling down the St James building in the city to support the great work that Anglicare and foster parents do in Victoria. I am inspired by the example of generosity and love shown by foster parents and their determination to improve the lives of children and youth in Victoria. Foster care is a way of offering children a safe, secure and nurturing place to stay while their family is unable to care for them. Anglicare Victoria is the largest provider of foster care services in the state and provides support to 80,000 children, young people and families every year. My goal was to raise $1,500 but I have met this target and am setting my sights higher. I would really appreciate it if you could help by sponsoring me through my Supporter page. To give to my page, or to read more about why I'm doing what I'm doing, please visit: Hamish Nye 16
