All Saints Day 5 November, 2017

Welcome A very warm welcome to St. John s, Toorak. This is a wonderful and historic parish, founded in 1859, and is a vibrant part of the Toorak and Melbourne community. This parish is part of the Anglican Church of Australia and a member of the global Anglican Communion, which is comprised of some 80 million people. We worship God in the richness of the 1500 year old Anglican tradition, using A Prayer Book for Australia (1995) for all our services of worship. The Parish of St. John s welcomes everyone to all services and events, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race or background. Our service today can be found here in this printed booklet with hymns found in the red hymnal Together in Song in each pew. You are also very welcome to use the green prayer books, A Prayer Book for Australia, which are also found in each pew. The scripture readings come from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible and follow the Revised Common Lectionary, which sets the readings to be read each week, such that we, with Anglicans and other Christians around Australia and across the world, are reading together the same parts of scripture, emphasizing our unity as members of the one body of Christ. If you re visiting for the first time do please introduce yourself to a welcomer or member of the clergy, and fill out the brief information form found in the foyer so we can stay in touch with you. Welcome and God bless you. 2

The 8am service begins with the Introductory Rite, below. The 10am service begins with the processional hymn 150. INTRODUCTORY RITE All stand Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hymn 150 Ye watches and ye Holy ones At the 8am service only the first and last verses are sung The Collect for Purity said together Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Two Great Commandments Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Jesus said: This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself. Confession We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Let us then run our race, laying aside every weight and bringing our sins to the Lord in penitence and faith. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 3

Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in Excelsis said at 8.00am; sung at 10.00am Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect for All Saints Day The celebrant prays the collect, after which all are seated The Children s Address At the 10am service children are invited to join together at the chancel step THE LITURGY OF THE WORD The Old Testament Lesson Revelation Read at 8am by B. Mouritz and 10am by B. Brown 9After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, 12 singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. 4

13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? 14 I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalter Psalm , 22 said at 8.00am, sung at 10.00am by the choir 1 I will bless the Lord continually: his praise shall be always in my mouth. 2 Let my soul boast of the Lord: the humble shall hear it and rejoice. 3 O praise the Lord with me: let us exalt his name together. 4 For I sought the Lord s help and he answered: and he freed me from all my fears. 5 Look towards him and be bright with joy: your faces shall not be ashamed. 6 Here is a wretch who cried, and the Lord heard me: and saved me from all my troubles. 7 The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him: and delivers them in their need. 8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: happy are they that hide in him! 9 Fear the Lord, all you his holy ones: for those who fear him never lack. 10 Lions may suffer want and go hungry: but those who seek the Lord lack nothing good. 22 The Lord ransoms the lives of his servants: and none who hide in him will be destroyed. 5

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen The Epistle 1 John Read at 8am by S. Kincaid; and at 10am, by K. Beecher 1See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand for the Gradual Hymn Gradual Hymn at 10am 448 Blessed are the pure in heart The Gospel Matthew The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, Chapter 5, commencing at the first verse. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 1When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 6

The Sermon The Locum, The Revd Jonathan Chambers Anthem Rejoice in the Lord Henry Purcell (c ) Nicene Creed said together, standing We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People kneeling Intercessor at 8am T. Mouritz, and at 10am, K. Beecher The Prayers end with the following Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Greeting of Peace standing We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 7

Cover Image Carl Heinrich Bloch The Sermon On the Mount 1877 Oil on copper, 104 x 92 cm Frederiksborg Slot, Hillerød About the Music Today Rejoice in the Lord is a fine example of a verse anthem: one in which soloists alternate with the full resources of the group. Known from early years as the Bell Anthem due to the effect of the opening orchestral ritornello, Z49 dates from , a period in which Purcell composed a prolific quantity of anthems utilising strings. Parish Notices Vicar on Leave Our Vicar Peter will be away on holiday and study leave from November 3 until November 27. Peter will be travelling in the USA and attending and giving papers at The Society of Biblical Literature Annual Conference in Boston and at Yale Divinity School, New Haven. In his absence The Revd Elizabeth Murray will be here, assisted on three Sundays and at other times as necessary, by locum The Revd Jonathan Chambers. Prayer Chain Is made up of parishioners who commit themselves to pray for those in need. 12 Parish Council The following have been elected to serve on Parish Council: Andrew Ankers; Jonathan Mortimer; Helen Ballantyne; Rob Pritchard; Vivienne Randall; Carmen Papageorge; Doug Harrah; and Anthony Mannering. Meet our new Assistant Curate! Greetings Saint John s Toorak. My name is Elizabeth Murray and I am very excited about joining you as Assistant Curate. This will be my second parish curacy since being ordained in By way of introduction, I grew up in Moonee Ponds, attending school in Essendon and Keilor. My mother Gayleen has now retired from full time science teaching and does relief teaching work part time. My father retired from teaching to become a school chaplain, has been a priest for twelve years and is currently senior chaplain at RMIT University and an Intentional Interim Minister for the Diocese helping parishes through times of transition. My sister Christine and I live together with Percy the cat. What was I doing before I offered myself for ordination? My undergraduate degree was in Arts and Sciences majoring in History and Geology. I then did a graduate diploma in Theology and a Masters in church history looking at the material culture of worship in Shropshire during the Reformation. I then decided to be something other than a uni student for a while. The various jobs I ve done include: homework club coordinator in Coolaroo/Dallas, manager of The Australian Hymn Book company, research assistant, university tutor, verger and parish administrator at St Mary s, North Melbourne. During 2012 I realised that God truly was calling me to ordained ministry and I should actively pursue it. I completed the year of discernment in 2013 and was accepted as a 12

candidate in I returned to Trinity College Theological School in 2013 and the generous Pitcher scholarship allowed me the privilege of full time study. This meant that I completed my Bachelor of Theology in I was ordained deacon 6 February 2016, then priest 26 November Other interests include listening to music as well as playing Euphonium and Trombone in a concert band. I enjoy travelling and previous destinations include USA, UK, New Zealand, Vanuatu and every state in Australia. Reading is also a way I relax, enjoying fantasy and detective stories in particular. I am looking forward to getting to know you and sharing your life of worship, prayer and ministry. with warmest regards, Elizabeth From Brenda Williams Thank you for your prayers and support following the death of my mother in England. To reduce the time required driving from the Mornington Peninsula I am wondering if you, or someone you know living close to St John's, has a spare bed I could make use of from 8pm on Saturday until 7am on Sunday. If you may be able to offer assistance in this way, please speak to me or contact the church office. I appreciate your consideration of this request. Every blessing, Brenda Williams From the Archivist Parish Archivist Geoff Quail Geoff is looking for any and all historical material concerning St. John s from throughout its considerable history and needs your help. If you have such material (photographs, letters, pewsheets, posters, flyers, invitations etc.) please would you contact Geoff directly on or at geoffrey.quail@monash.edu. Alternatively you may also wrap up or box up material and bring it to the Church Office, with a note addressed to Geoff. All material donated to the church will be cared for, preserved and stored safely. If you wish for material to be returned to you, this is of course welcome too. Geoff also welcomes conversations with 13

members of St. John s who have knowledge of its history both from their own experience and also from that of their families. From the Vicar updated! The Sally Beddison Garden (please note change of title) I am delighted to share with you the wonderful news that St. John s is the recipient of a most generous gift from the Beddison family, members of our congregation. The Beddison family, comprising of Tony and Robyn; Sam, Belinda and Poppy; Georgie, Edward, Freddie and Rupert; and, Daisy, are generously providing the funds for a new garden for our church. The new garden will surround the church on all sides (apart from the existing memorial garden) and at the front of the vicarage, hall and kindergarten. Designed pro bono by pre-eminent Australian landscape designer Paul Bangay in his beautiful and signature style, the garden will be a first-class landscape for the church and local community to enjoy for decades to come. New trees include Tulip trees, Teddy Bear Magnolias, Snow Pears and Pin Oaks, with mass plantings of white azaleas, Japanese box, hydrangeas, viburnums, star jasmine, bay hedge, rugosa roses and white catmint. New lawns, path lighting and irrigation systems will all be installed as part of the project. Such a beautiful garden requires extensive maintenance and care. The Beddison family have also generously committed to ten years of premium horticultural care, supervision and maintenance to ensure its establishment and longevity, after which St. John s shall be responsible for its ongoing care. Permission for this new garden has been given by the Vicar, Wardens and Parish Council after extensive consultation with Heritage Victoria and Stonnington Council. Donors of existing plants and garden furniture have been consulted and all aspects of arboricultural care have been attended to. Significant existing trees, including all the oaks, the Norfolk pine and the cypresses, will remain. Existing plants including camellias and azaleas 14

will be relocated where possible, and, when not possible, parishioners will have the opportunity to have plants relocated to their own gardens (at their own expense). The Memorial Garden on the north side of the church will remain as it is, resplendent with azaleas and a peaceful place of burial for many loved members of our church. The new garden will be known as The Sally Beddison Garden, in loving memory of Sally Beddison, mother of Tony Beddison, who was buried from St. John s, Toorak, on the 14 th of August, Currently final tenders are being received for the construction and installation of this garden and works are likely to commence before the end of this year. with every blessing, The Revd. Dr. Peter A. French Prayers for Christian Unity 10.00am Thursday 30 November at Toorak Uniting Church. Supporting St. John s As the church begins its new financial year on October 1, each year we need to remember to make our pledge of financial support to the life and ministry of our spiritual home, St. John s. Please do make your giving to this church a priority and give generously. We are very dependent upon the gifts of our congregation past and present to provide the wonderful ministry of this community of faith. Your pledge enables the Vicar and Parish Council to budget and make plans for the entirety of the year to follow, including staffing, events, studies, maintenance and a whole host of important factors in keeping this church a beacon of faith in the Toorak 15

community! If you have not done so before, do please consider a pledge to our church. Please also consider giving on a regular basis using the Anglican Development Fund payment arrangement, details of which can be found in the foyer. Nine out of ten parishioners use this method and all those using it are most comfortable with its convenience. Persons counting the collection have commented how much easier and safer it is not to have to open and count dozens of envelopes each Sunday. The forms are in the porch, and any queries may be directed to our Recorder, Helen Ballantyne on Toorak Ecumenical Movement Food for Friends Campaign 2017 This year the Food for Friends campaign commences on Friday 1 st December until Sunday 10 th December. By collections at Toorak Village and Hawksburn shopping centre supermarkets the aim, through various charities, is to provide non-perishable food to those in need at Christmas. As you are most likely aware, the campaign is undertaken 100% by volunteers from the three churches, St Peter s Catholic Church, Toorak Uniting Church and our church. The overall co-ordination and responsibility is once again St John s. This year we have: Updated the flyer and supermarket banners Upholstered and padded the stools Introduced shorter hours and allocated more flexible volunteer time with slots of either one or two hours Over the next few weeks there will be the opportunity for volunteers to help with this project by giving of their time. The rosters are available at the back of the church at each church service. Two people are required for each time slot. We are very aware some people are regular volunteers; we appreciate their continued involvement and would be thrilled to have some new faces joining this year. Please join us in this worthwhile cause. 16
