S T JOHN S, TOORAK NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 25 September, 2016

WELCOME A very warm welcome to St John s, Toorak. This is a wonderful and historic parish, founded in 1859, and is a vibrant part of the Toorak, and Melbourne community. This parish is part of the Anglican Church of Australia and a member of the global Anglican Communion, which is comprised of some 80 million people. We worship God in the richness of the 1500 year-old Anglican tradition, using The Prayer Book for Australia (1995) for all our services of worship. The Parish of St John s welcomes everyone to all services and events, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race or background. Our service today can be found here in this printed booklet with hymns found in the red hymnal in each pew, Together in Song. You are also very welcome to use the prayer books, the green Prayer Books for Australia, which are also found in each pew. The scripture readings come from The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible and follow The Australian Lectionary, which sets the readings to be read each week, such that we with Anglicans and other Christians around Australia and across the world are reading together the same parts of scripture, emphasizing our unity as members of the one body of Christ. If you re visiting for the first time do please introduce yourself to a welcomer or member of the clergy, and fill out the brief information form found in the foyer so we can stay in touch with you. Welcome and God bless you. 2

The 8am service begins with the Introductory Rite, below. The 10am service begins with the processional hymn 562. INTRODUCTORY RITE All stand Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Hymn at 8am 562 I m not ashamed to own my Lord The Collect for Purity said together Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Great Commandments 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' Jesus said: 'This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.' Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God s forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to 3

love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in Excelsis said at 8am service and sung at 10am service to music found at hymn 757 Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect for The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost The celebrant prays the collect, after which all are seated The Children s Address at 10am All children are invited to join the clergy at the chancel step THE LITURGY OF THE WORD The Lesson Jeremiah a, 6-15 (Read at 8am by T. Mouritz; and at 10am, by J. Smith) 1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of King Zedekiah of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. 2 At that time the army of the king of Babylon was besieging Jerusalem, and the prophet Jeremiah was confined in the court of the guard that was in the palace of the king of Judah, 3 where King Zedekiah of Judah had confined 4

him. Zedekiah had said, Why do you prophesy and say: Thus says the Lord : I am going to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 6 Jeremiah said, The word of the Lord came to me: 7 Hanamel son of your uncle Shallum is going to come to you and say, Buy my field that is at Anathoth, for the right of redemption by purchase is yours. 8 Then my cousin Hanamel came to me in the court of the guard, in accordance with the word of the Lord, and said to me, Buy my field that is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours; buy it for yourself. Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord. 9 And I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, and weighed out the money to him, seventeen shekels of silver. 10 I signed the deed, sealed it, got witnesses, and weighed the money on scales. 11 Then I took the sealed deed of purchase, containing the terms and conditions, and the open copy; 12 and I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel, in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, and in the presence of all the Judeans who were sitting in the court of the guard. 13 In their presence I charged Baruch, saying, 14 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, both this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware jar, in order that they may last for a long time. 15 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land.hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalter Psalm , (said at 8am, sung by the choir at 10am) 1 Those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High: who abide under the shadow of the Almighty, 2 They will say to the Lord You are my refuge and my stronghold: my God in whom I trust. 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the hunter: and from the destroying curse. 5

4 He will cover you with his wings, and you will be safe under his feathers: his faithfulness will be your shield and defence. 5 You shall not be afraid of any terror by night: or of the arrow that flies by day, 6 Of the pestilence that walks about in darkness: or the plague that destroys at noonday. 14 You have set your love upon me, says the Lord, and therefore I will deliver you: I will lift you out of danger, because you have known my name. 15 When you call upon me I will answer you: I will be with you in trouble, I will rescue you and bring you to honour. 16 With long life I will satisfy you: and fill you with my salvation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Epistle 1 Timothy (Read at 8am by S. Kincaid; and at 10am H. Nye) 6Of course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; 7 for we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of it; 8 but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. 9 But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. 11 But as for you, man of God, shun all this; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 In the presence of God, who 6

gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14 to keep the commandment without spot or blame until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which he will bring about at the right time he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords. 16 It is he alone who has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see; to him be honour and eternal dominion. Amen. 17 As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, 19 thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn at 10am 594 Fight the good fight The Gospel Luke The Holy Gospel according to St Luke, Chapter 16, commencing at the nineteenth verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. 19 There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. 24 He called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames. 25 But Abraham said, Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and 7

Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us. 27 He said, Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father s house 28 for I have five brothers that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham replied, They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them. 30 He said, No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent. 31 He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. The Sermon The Curate, The Revd Matthew Connolly At the 8am service the Nicene Creed immediately follows the sermon Anthem at 10.00am Praise (Let all the World) George Dyson ( ) Nicene Creed said together, standing We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his 8

kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People kneeling (Intercessor at 8am C. Papageorge, and at 10am J. Griffith) The Prayers end with the following Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Greeting of Peace standing We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. All share with each other the sign of peace, customarily shaking hands and saying, Peace be with you Offertory Hymn 609 May the mind of Christ my Saviour During which a collection for the life and ministry of St. John s will be taken Prayer for Receiving the Offertory Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. 9

Parish Notices Hilary s happy/sad news Through God s gracious leading, I have decided to retire (happy news) and will be leaving St John s/all Saints (sad news) on 26 February For five and a half years, I have been so blessed in serving you and God in this parish and look forward to our ministry together for the next five months and beyond on an occasional basis. I give thanks to God for your love and faith which has always been an inspiration to me and pray for God s continued love and blessing on you and your families. With much love, Hilary Associate Priest Sunday School Sunday School occurs every Sunday during term time, with the exception of the second Sunday where a service of baptism occurs during the 10.00am Eucharist. There is a children s talk after the Collect at which point the children leave the church with the Sunday School leaders for the kindergarten. They return for communion. Prayers for Christian Unity Thursday 29 September at 10.00am, Toorak Uniting Church. Can t make Church Sunday? Sleep in?! A said service of Holy Communion, with sermon, is held every Wednesday at 7pm in the Chapel of St Michael and All Angels (Angel Chapel). Persons counting the collection have commented how much easier and safer it is not to have to open and count dozens of envelopes each Sunday. The forms are in the porch, and any queries may be directed to our Recorder, Helen Ballantyne Annual Meeting Sunday 22 November The Annual Meeting of parishioners will be held this year on Sunday 20 November at St John s Toorak, at the conclusion of the 10am service that day, commencing at approximately 11.30am in the Church.
