To assist parents in preparing for the Sacrament of Baptism, the parish requires a preparation class for parents. HOLY ORDERS For information on ordination to the priesthood or diaconate, contact one of the Priests in the Parish Office. MARRIAGE Engaged couples should contact a priest at least six months prior to their wedding date. One of the engaged must be a parishioner at St. John the Evangelist for one year. For further information, please call the Parish Office. ANOINTING OF THE SICK This Sacrament is intended for persons who are seriously ill or infirm. In order to receive the Sacrament, contact the Parish Office. 3 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 23, 2017 Weekly Collection 7/16 $ 7, Projected Faith Direct $ 3, Total Collection $11, Weekly Budget $15, THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God s might, but is a direct result of God s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clemency? Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God s mercy, power, and love. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. To have a home where you can go at any time and find people who accept, love, and understand you, is one of the most precious things in life. Jesus found such a home at the house of a woman named Martha in Bethany. She served Jesus and welcomed him and they developed a special bond of friendship. Martha lived with her sister, Mary. Martha was energetic and outspoken while Mary was reflective and quiet. Jesus loved them both and appreciated the gifts each of them had. The Gospel of Luke records that Martha prepared a meal for Jesus during one of His visits and Mary sat talking. Martha complained that Jesus should tell Mary to help her. Jesus said that Martha did not have time to enjoy being with Jesus and listen to His words because she was worrying so much about the work. In John s Gospel, the sisters sent a message to Jesus that their brother, Lazarus, was ill. They knew Jesus would come and cure him and they trusted in his loving care for them. Jesus arrived four days after Lazarus death. Martha went out to greet Jesus when He arrived and honestly told Jesus what she had expected from Him. Jesus asked her to believe that He was the Resurrection and that He had the power to give eternal life to all who believe in Him. Martha trusted Jesus totally and said, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world (John 11:27).That very day, Jesus raised her brother, Lazarus, from the dead, showing us that He has power over life and death and the power to give eternal life. Martha had a faithful heart. Her Feast Day is July 29. Parish Bazaar. Although it is summer and November seems to be months away, the Bazaar will be here before we know it! Now is the time to begin thinking of how you would like to donate your time, your Treasures (Trove) and your talents to help make the Parish Bazaar 2017, on November 10 & 11, a huge success! There will be more information coming soon with flyers and inserts that will motivate that Fall, Pre-Christmas BAZAAR feeling! Save the dates now on your calendar! Grab family, friends and neighbors and rally around for an enjoyable weekend with our SJE family community. Our Lady of Fatima: 100th Anniversary To mark the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal, the Catholic Standard is sponsoring a pilgrimage to the holy site on the exact date of the famous miracle of the sun.
