Adoration: Experience His Silence Contemplative silence is the silence of God. This silence is clinging to God, appearing before God, and placing oneself in his presence, offering oneself to him, mortifying oneself in him, adoring, loving, and hearing him, listening to him and resting in him. This is the silence of eternity, the union of the soul with God. Robert Cardinal Sarah Jesus, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, awaits the attention of each and every one of us. How will you respond to His invitation? Eucharistic Adoration is available 24 hours a day in Our Lady s Chapel. Come and be attentive to His silence. BAPTISM The celebration of infant Baptism takes place on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 2:30 P.M. in the Main Church. To assist parents in preparing for the Sacrament of Baptism, the parish requires a preparation class for parents. For more information on Baptism Preparation and to schedule a Baptism, contact the Parish Office, RECONCILIATION AND EUCHARIST Children are prepared for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist annually. Please contact the Religious Education Office for more information. CONFIRMATION This Sacrament is offered annually to our 8th Grade students in our School and Religious Education Program. Adults may also arrange for Confirmation. For more information, contact the Religious Education Office. HOLY ORDERS For information on Ordination to the Priesthood or Diaconate, contact one of the Priests in the Parish Office. MARRIAGE Engaged couples should contact a priest at least six months prior to their wedding date. One of the engaged must be a parishioner at St. John the Evangelist for one year. For further information, please call the Parish Office. ANOINTING OF THE SICK This Sacrament is intended for persons who are seriously ill or infirm. In order to receive the Sacrament, contact the Parish Office. This year, the Gala will be held in the Knights of Columbus Facility on Rosensteel Avenue (across from the Historic Church). Mark your calendars now and plan to attend! We want all to come and enjoy. Please spread the word to your friends and the businesses in the community. In order to make the Gala a success we need the following: lots of quality and fun donations for the Silent and the Live Auctions; a full house of attendees; and volunteers to work the event. Donations and ticket orders previously have been mailed and placed in the Bulletin. Please use these forms to donate articles, activities, resort stays, etc. would be really interesting items for bids. Adult beverage bottles, tickets to sporting or entertainment events, and personal service offerings (meals, yard work, etc.) are all great ideas for auction items. The ticket order form covers both early entry and regular admission. The ticket form also contains information on ordering on-line. The Committee can always use more volunteers to help make this a great event. We need specific help with Catering/Event Management; Advertisement Sales for the Program; Auction Item Coordination (sorting, display, set up); and Ticket/Sponsorship Sales for the event to succeed. The DC Padres, a baseball team consisting entirely of Catholic Priests and Seminarians, will play their final game of the 2018 season Sunday, August 26 against St. Vincent Pallotti High School, at the Baysox Stadium in Bowie. Come cheer on the Padres! The Padres game begins shortly after the 1:35 p.m. Baysox game ends around 4:30-4:45 p.m.. Ticket price ($8) includes both Baysox and DC Padres games. Religious Education. It is not too early to register for CCD classes for the Term beginning in September. Music Literacy Class Would you like to know how to read music? Does the thought of sight reading a score make you quaver? If so, please come to a free Music Literacy series here at St. John s! These classes are fun and an easy induction into the mysteries of reading music. The classes will be held in the Main Church on Tuesday, August 21 and Tuesday, August 28 7:30-9:00 p.m. All the materials will be provided. For more information, please call Dr. Mario at ext THE GIFT OF GRACE The gift of grace increases as the struggles increase. St. Rose of Lima Run or Ride for Vocations! Registration is open for these two fun opportunities to help support our seminarians and vocations to the priesthood. The Run for Vocations /Marine Corp 10K will be held on Sunday, October 28. The Ride for Vocations / Southern Maryland Century bicycle ride will be held on Monday, September 3. Visit for more information and to register for either of these events. It is not necessary to be part of a parish team to run or ride. Plan to register soon, as the races fill quickly. All funds raised will support vocation promotion and seminarian formation in the Archdiocese of Washington. Please RFV@adw.org with any questions Summer Organ Recital Series at the Basilica. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception invites you to their 2018 Summer Organ Recital Series in the Great Upper Church. A recital will take place every Sunday in the month of August at 6:00 p.m. The series features Stefan Donner of Vienna, Austria TODAY, August 19; and Peter Latona of Washington, DC on August 26. The recitals are open to the public and no tickets or reservations are required. The Basilica offers free parking and is conveniently located within walking distance of the Brookland-CUA Station of Metro's Red Line. Please call the Basilica at Catholic Women: How to Cultivate the Garden of Your Soul On Saturday, September 22, join the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) for a workshop on practical tips for growing in the virtues of gratitude, prayer, and patience. (Don t most of us need more patience?) The presenter is Rose Folsom, author and speaker at VirtueConnection.com. Registration details coming soon! There is no charge for the workshop, but a free-will offering will be taken to support Josephite seminarians. This event will take place at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine (3900 Harewood Rd., NE) and will last from 10a.m.- 12:30p.m., including 12 noon Mass. YOUNG ADULTS The Young Adult Women's Small Group will be reading and reflecting on Pope Francis's recent Apostolic Exhortation, "Rejoice and Be Glad,". The meetings will continue bi-weekly on Thursdays. We will meet at 7:00 p.m. in the Kennedy Room on September 13 and 27th. Please contact for more information. Into the Deep Young Adult Retreat. This is a retreat for young adults (college-age through 30 s) providing practical lesson on prayer, discernment, and how to listen to the voice of God in the depth of your heart. How do I hear God speak? How do I discern a job, relationship, or big decision?
