1 St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral 650 Hanover Street Manchester, New Hampshire Tel Fax D E C E M B E R PRESIDENT S MESSagE Dear Fellow Parishioners, I hope that you all had an opportunity to gather with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day and gave thanks to God for all that we have and to reaffirm our love of family, friends, neighbors, and community. That holiday sets us up for a busy December which is filled with holy days and preparations for Christmas. As the month of December comes to a close I look back on 2014 with love and affection for our parishioners and our community as a whole. Your support and friendship this past year helped me in my first complete year as president. As a result you helped our community to rise to new heights. Glendi preparations and Glendi weekend were spectacular. You not only came out to help but brought your friends along for good measure. Together we did it!! In April we came together as a family following the Resurrection Service for a Community Paschal Dinner. We more than doubled the number of attendees from Just one week later we had a St. George Name Day Dance. In October we had our first Taverna Night. A wonderful time was had by all who attended each event and we turned a profit at the dances! I hope that more people will be able to attend these events next year. This is the first year that we have been operating under a Stewardship Program having moved forward from the annual dues which had been in place since forever. I would like to thank Greg Timbas who undertook this awesome endeavor. We were apprehensive as we began. Our parishioners rose to the challenge with an understanding that we cannot continue to operate in the old way. Did we collect enough funds so that we are no longer operating at a deficit? No but there is hope for the future. Did we take the big financial hit that some naysayers told us would be a certainty? No! That is because of the very generous nature of so many of our parishioners. As I write this has everyone chosen to participate and pay their fair share? Not yet but the year hasn t ended. It is not too late. To all those who stepped up to the plate and contributed whatever you could a heartfelt thank you on behalf of our entire community. As I have repeatedly stated: Together we can do anything! YOU have proved that time and again! At this time we are waiting for a priest to be assigned to our parish. This is easier said than done because there are a number of parishes in our Metropolis in need of a priest and there are not many priests available. I know that we would like someone right now but that is not going to happen. We will practice patience. I would like to express my deepest thanks to: The Board of Directors, Cathy Moufarge and the Anagennesis Ladies Board, Sunday School Director Athena Bevan and the Sunday School Teachers, our Chantors Nola Kalantzis and Mark Adam, Cathy Moufarge and the Choir, Joyce Trapotsis, Organist, all of our GLENDI volunteers, Athletic Director Ted Setas and our basketball coaches, Billy Timbas for organizing the Saturday Morning Basketball Clinic, Sia Cote advisor to HOPE/JOY, Kathy Koutroubas and Ginny Tsirimokos advisors to GOYA, Jason Cote who oversees our Scouting Program, Veneta Tatakis for spearheading the special Friday evening youth activities and the Greek Preschool Program, Athanasia Papanicolau for teaching our youngest children Greek, Angela Bourassa for teaching those same children Greek dance, the parents who ferry their children from activity to the next, our office staff Joyce Bourque and Janet Surak, our custodian Dan Robitaille, and once again all of the parishioners of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral for supporting our ministries in any way you are able. URgENT NEED FOR FOOD The demand for food assistance is at an all time high and food bank supplies are at a record low. Help is needed to fill their shelves and ensure that some of the poorest residents of our community receive food. The greatest needs are: peanut butter, jelly, tuna fish, canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, pasta, and sauce. Please drop your items off at the Community Center and we will deliver them to the soup kitchen. New Horizons and the recipients of the food are very grateful for your generous donations. 6 SUNDaY ScHOOl Dear St. George Community, The Christmas season is upon us. I encourage you to talk to your kids about the true meaning of Christmas. Can you imagine the little busy town of Bethlehem? The sounds of people and animals on the streets? Ask them to imagine a quiet, dark night with a few twinkling stars. On that quiet, dark night our tiny Savior came in a lowly manger bed. Have your children look for the signs of Christmas-angels, nativity scene, and a sparkly star on the tree. Christmas is a special time to remember that God gave us His only Son and promised us forgiveness and salvation through Him. It is when we keep Christ at the center that we can fully experience the joy of Christmas. Letʼs celebrate the Christmas season and the birth of Jesus together. Join the Sunday School children on December 14 for our annual Christmas pageant. The students have been working very hard to learn traditional Christian Christmas carols. May the light of Jesus always shine in your heart! I want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas! A special thank you to Cathy and the beautiful Choir for their contribution, and those who financially gave to hospice and the Cathedral. We gladly welcome our new board members as follows: President - Marena Koutroubas Vice President - Joannah Vougias Treasurer - George Tsirimokos Secretary - Yianni Dimos Public Relations - Andriana Skaperdas It s the start of a new GOYA year and we we would also like to welcome our new members and existing members back. On the 16th of November we helped out at the Pancake breakfast which was a big success! We also would like to thank everyone who supported us with our Thanksgiving bake sale. In addition, we were honored to be asked to compete in a gingerbread contest with the Nashua GOYA. The whole GOYA helped build a great house and we couldn't be prouder! PaNcaKE BREaKFaST THaNK YOU Thank you to the St. George Community for your support! The Sunday School Harvest Pancake Breakfast was a huge success! Thank you to all the volunteers who sold tickets, cooked, set up and served! Happy Thanksgiving! St. george Board of Directors cub ScOUTS December will be an active month for our Cub Scouts! On December 6th, we will be participating in the Christmas Parade in Manchester (look for us marching along!), we also will be doing Christmas Caroling at one of the local nursing homes to help bring some holiday cheer! I also have word that we may receive a visit from Santa as well! We have a lot of advancement happening in the Pack. Our Spaghetti Dinner is scheduled for January 10, so we will be making meatballs towards the end of December for that event! We want to send our best wishes for a Happy and Healthy Christmas season to the Community, and thank you for all the support you have given us this year! Xronia Polla!
