1 St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral 650 Hanover Street Manchester, New Hampshire Tel Fax FATHER ANdREw S MESSAgE CHRISTOS ANESTI -CHRIST IS RISEN! For mighty is His love for us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever. Today Hades lets out a groan: My sovereignty is destroyed. I received Him as a mortal, one among the dead; but this One I am powerless to contain; instead with Him I lose all I had governed. I had held the dead for ages, but behold, He resurrects all. (From Holy Saturday Morning) The entire Christian confession is contained in the three words Christ is Risen. Saint Paul, referring to this fact, clearly and emphatically states: If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. (1 st Corinthians 15:14) This is the reason why, from the beginning, the Church of Christ set forth the Resurrection of Her Lord as the center of her worship. During the Great and Holy Lent, we begin to see, through the services and hymns of the Church, our lives laid out before us. Sometimes, it isn t a pretty sight. But the season of Great Lent provides us with the opportunity to review the slides of our life, tarnished by our living as the Prodigal Son, squandering all that God has given us and continues to provide us each and every day. Then comes the glorious entry of our Lord into Jerusalem, remembered on Palm Sunday. We then see, unfolding before our eyes, the events following this glorious entry, His ultimate betrayal, His humiliation, His punishment, death and burial. It would truly be sad if that were the end. But it wasn t and isn t! It is just the beginning of a new life that God promises for each and every believer who acknowledges Jesus Christ as Lord. We are reminded of that on Holy Saturday morning as we read the Gospel lesson of the first Resurrection. We are reminded that the ladies went to the tomb very early and they found it empty. They are told that He is not here, HE IS RISEN, see the place where they laid Him. Reliving the events through the life of the Church and its services, especially the Holy Week services, we can actually M A Y say that we have seen Christ s Resurrection. But then, we must, as the ladies who went to the tomb were told to do, Go, tell the disciples. We can and MUST do the same thing, not merely in words but in all our actions. Others must be able to see, in the way we live and relate to others, that we actually believe that Christ s Resurrection has set us free. They must be able to understand, by our lives of example, that we have actually seen the Resurrection of our Lord and live our lives in that freedom that comes from Him and truly love one another as He has loved us by His example. His Resurrection brought a new reality to the world. It is the Church s (we are the church) responsibility and mission to manifest that new reality. No longer the older way, but rather the New Life in HIM, living and loving as though He has really set us free because HE has. The life of the Church, the evidence of this new reality, is the care and concern we show to one another. As the great doxastikon (hymn) of Pasha proclaims, Let us embrace one another let us speak to those who hate us and let us forgive one another. The message is universal, not just for us Orthodox Christians, but for all. Therefore, let us extend our care and concern to all. In the Resurrection, we have all have become brothers and sisters. We must embrace all, dialogue with all, and forgive all because WE HAVE SEEN CHRIST S RESURRECTON. My dear spiritual children in Christ, let the proclamation of Christ s resurrection not only flow from your lips, but inscribe them in your hearts. May this year s celebration of His resurrection enlighten you to truly LIVE THE RESURRECTION of this Feast of Feasts and for the rest of your lives. Glory Be To God! CHRISTOS ANESTI! CHRIST IS RISEN! Father Andrew ALITHOS ANESTI! TRULY HE IS RISEN!

4 PRESIdENT S MESSAgE CHRISTOS ANESTI!! ALITHOS ANESTI!! CHRIST IS RISEN!! TRULY HE IS RISEN!! What a joyous message!!! The solemnity of Holy Lent has passed and we have heard the Good News! The Tomb is empty! Christ is Risen and with His Resurrection He has brought hope to us. There is a better place the Kingdom and He has prepared a place for us there with Him. As a child I remember being in awe as our family gathered around the table on Easter Sunday and began the festivities with the singing of Christos Anesti. All of the adults had sung in the choir at one time in their lives so it was done in 4-part harmony. Oh the joy and happiness! The fast was over and the feast was about to begin. As an adult the first singing of that special hymn each year always puts a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. I hope that all of us will keep hope alive as we expect the Resurrection of the dead and the life of the ages to come in His Kingdom. May we continue with the good works we began during Holy Lent to improve ourselves and our community. Speaking of good works there are many people who deserve the thanks of our community. Let me begin by first acknowledging the many people who took time out of their busy schedules to attend worship services. Some services had better attendance than others but each of us attended when we could and each time our spirits were uplifted. Thank you to everyone who came and helped to clean our church in preparation for Pascha. The weather outside was dreary but those inside paid it no heed. They scrubbed and polished every surface they could reach until it shone. During Holy Week we had many people who worked to make the week special. Fr. Andrew s attention to detail and his devotion to our parish is evident every day. Our chanters Mark Adam, Jason Cote and Nola Kalantzis along with our choir under the direction of Cathy Moufarge helped Fr. Andrew to provide us with uplifting worshipful services. Our Altar Boys followed Fr. Andrew s direction and were right on the mark. Your Board of Directors followed the schedule that they set for themselves to not only be present for worship services but to do everything in their power to make certain that everything went off without a hitch. I am constantly amazed at all the behind the scenes work that needs to be done. The ladies of the Anagennesis sold tsourekia (saving many us from the task of baking our own) and wrapped the Easter eggs that you brought to church for distribution after the Resurrection Service and the Service of Agape. They spearheaded the effort to decorate the Kouvouklio and the church for Good Friday and the Resurrection Service. YOU 4 provided the funds for the decorations through your generous donations. It was heartwarming to see so many young people helping and learning. The GOYANS came Friday afternoon and took care of work in the Narthex so that Board Members could assist parishioners. They returned on Sunday morning to assist in preparations for the Easter Egg Hunt. They are always ready, willing and able to help. We have a dedicated group of women who work way behind the scenes at home baking Prosfora and then bringing them to church and they do this year round. Many women also gather to make koulourakia and tiropetes for Coffee Hours. Our Second Annual Pot Luck Dinner was a success because people shared the delicious food they had prepared at home. Those who aren t in to cooking knew exactly what else to bring to add to the table. Everyone shared. It was wonderful to break the fast together. These are all perfect examples of people sharing their time and talents as a part of our Stewardship Program. We can t all of us do everything but each of us can do something to contribute to our community. Our parish is blessed because of everything that you did to make this holy season so special and everything that you do to make all of our efforts a success. On Saturday, May 3 we will have a Community Cleanup Day to spruce up the outside of our facilities. Bring your brooms, your rakes and your shovels and we ll get busy cleaning and spreading mulch. Can t work outside? Perhaps you can help to prepare lunch. We will begin at 9 a.m. and hope to have the project completed by 1 p.m. All of your Youth Groups have been invited to help but they will need some adult helpers. I hope to see many of you there. Soon we will begin cooking for Glendi and making all the necessary preparations for a successful festival weekend. There will be plenty of opportunities for all of us to help. Please don t wait to be asked individually. Volunteer to do that which you can do best! I would like to thank everyone who has completed and returned their Stewardship Form. Together we can make this work and it is working!! Haven t returned it yet? It s not too late. The month of May will be a busy one for us. The Ahepans will hold their annual spring breakfast on May 4 which will be followed by the First General Assembly of May 11 the Board of Directors will provide the Mother s Day Luncheon. May 18 is the end-of-the-year program for the Sunday School. On May 26 Fr. Andrew will be at Pine Grove Cemetery for the Memorial Day Prayers. Wishing you all a joyous spring!! Nikki Moutsioulis

Our Scouts made a very good showing at the Chuckwagon derby at Camp Carpenter, winning first place in the subject of Cub Scout Knowledge. The weather was beautiful and the Boy Scouts of Troop 104 were gracious hosts for our Weblos Scouts, winning the "Iron Chef" competition with Chicken a la Grecque. Bring your sons and grandsons and their friends to learn about the wonderful opportunities in Scouting at St. George. Thank you, again, Tom Tsirimokos STEwARdSHIP UPdATE I'd like to thank all of our parishioners who have pledged their support of our stewardship program. As we close out our initial phase of the program, I am please and warmed by the number of pledges and the amount pledged. To date, 188 families have pledged $72, We are ahead of last year's dues program at this time, yet well below the expectation of the number of parishioners we believe to have within our community. As I've communicated in the past, the goal this year is to become more transparent with our finances, to restore the faith in our leadership, to raise the necessary funding to operate our facility in a responsible manner and finally to build an accurate data base of the real number of congregants we have. Once we have a real number of parishioners, it is only then can we plan and forecast responsibly. To this end, I am asking each and every parishioner to compete a pledge form soon as we embark upon the outreach phase of our stewardship program. It CAN be done! ANAgENNESIS NEwS Thank You: Thank you to our parishioners for making the Palm Sunday dinner a success and for your generous donations during Lent. Community: The Anagennesis Board of Directors is pleased to announce we have established the Anagennesis Memorial Service Award. This award will be presented to two deserving graduating seniors who have shown commitment and devotion to their church community through attendance, participation and volunteerism. There is no application process for this award. A list of graduating seniors will be provided to us by Father Andrew. We will present the award on Scholarship Sunday. We established this award to honor our deceased Anagennesis members. In lieu of flowers, we placed the cost of flowers into our memorial fund. These are the funds used to establish our Memorial Service Award. We felt this would be a nice way to honor our members who served their community so well. May their memories be eternal. glendi 2014: Anyone interested in chairing pastitsio or galaktoboureko, please call Cathy Cooking/Baking Schedule date Item Chairs Phone # June Stuffed Peppers Teddy Karagiannis June Meatballs Tana Gustafson June Dolmades Carol Dionis Jenny Dakos Look for a revised cooking schedule in June s newsletter: Volunteers needed. 9 SUNdAY SCHOOL Dear St. George Community, The snow has finally melted and it is beginning to feel like springtime. I can see tiny buds on the trees, the grass is getting greener and the tulips have broken through. Pretty soon there will be color in the garden again. My son Athan came home with a craft project from preschool describing the colors and what God did for us and what He gave to us. Red is for the blood He gave. Green is for the grass He made. Yellow is for the sun so bright. Orange is for the edge of night. Black is for the sins we made. White is for the grace He gave. Purple is for His hour of sorrow. Pink is for our new tomorrow. God gave us many gifts, including our precious children. I hope you will join us on May 18 to celebrate the achievements of our Sunday school children. The Sunday school students have been very busy this year. Especially the past few weeks with Lent, Easter and preparing their class prayers for the end of the year program. The Sunday school is still collecting new and gently used books for babies, children and young adults. The books will be donated to the Easter Seals Development Center in Manchester and to Penelopeʼs Place in Brockton, MA. The book drive is open to the entire St. George community. The books can be dropped off in Sunday school or in the drop off box in the lobby of the community center. With the communityʼs help we can make this book drive a huge success!
