2 FAtHer Andrew s message For your information: His Eminence Metropolitan Meodios is grateful to e Reverend Dr. Theodore Stylianopoulos for responding to recent media reports concerning a 4 century Coptic text. Faer Stylianopoulos is Professor Emeritus of New Testament at Holy Cross Greek Orodox School of Theology. Jesus wife? An announcement about an ancient text in which Jesus is reported to have spoken about my wife has received extensive attention in e media in recent days. The text comes from a small papyrus fragment about 1x3 inches in size, judged to be of e four century AD, which apparently had broken off from a larger page of a document presumed lost. The text is still in e process of linguistic and chemical analysis to determine its auenticity. When e papyrus fragment was discovered, and under what circumstances it has passed from hand to hand until e public announcement, are presently unknown. Written in ancient Sahidic Coptic script, e text is perhaps a translation of an earlier Greek document. Because e lines on all four sides of e fragment are broken and incomplete, transcription of meaningful sentences is impossible. But e names of Jesus and also Mary (presumably Mary Magdalene) are reported to occur, and also certain phrases, including Jesus using e expression my wife. Mary Magdalene has been portrayed as an intimate of Jesus, but not a wife, in oer ancient writings already known to e Faers of e Church and designated as apocrypha and fraudulent. These works were composed by small circles of heretical teachers concerned to disseminate eir own and often bizarre teachings. For example, a few years ago e discovery of The Gospel of Judas caused a stir in e media. This document was known to St. Irenaeus in e late second century AD. Among its strange teachings is at Judas was e only disciple who truly understood Jesus and at his treachery was a good ing in itself because it helped Jesus to be crucified; except at by at time e real Christ had (weirdly) departed from Jesus and at only Jesus e man was crucified. Professor Karen King of Harvard Divinity School who made e announcement cautioned at e new text is no proof at Jesus was married but only an indication at Christians in e four century debated e issues of marriage and celibacy. The Gospels and most of e oer books of e 2 New Testament are extensive documents of e first century AD and provide no hint at Jesus was married. Marriage was viewed as a sacred covenant in Judaism. It should be noted at St. Peter e Apostle, as well as oer apostles were married (Mark 1:30; 1 Cor. 9:5). The Bible and e Orodox eology confirm at marriage is instituted by God, it is honorable and holy, one of e sacraments of e Church. Just as e Church honors a celibate life dedicated to God, so also it celebrates marriage as a workshop of God s kingdom a journey to God. Faer Andrew Community Contributions The st. 6 desiderata (from e latin meaning desired ings ) sunday school nikki moutsioulis Have your children joined us? We d love to have em!! We hope to teach as many children as we can about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and about our Orodox fai. Our Sunday School has classes for children in Nursery rough Grade 10. Nursery children must be 3 years old by September 30, 2012 and be potty trained. All children first attend Divine Liturgy and sit in e assigned pews by class. Parents are invited to sit wi em if e children are hesitant and to come to e classrooms if necessary. Remember at e Divine Liturgy begins at 10 a.m. It is important at we all be in church to hear e reading of e Epistle and e Gospel. Children who have prepared to receive Holy Communion will be brought back to Church at e appropriate time. Do your high school aged children need Community Service hours? We can help!! Contact me and we can get em assigned to classroom or office duty. We d love to have em work wi us. It was exciting to see so many of our children involved at Glendi. Never has lemonade, cotton candy, and ice cream been served wi such fervor! Not just working but happily working. This is a lesson eir parents and grandparents taught em to become a part of e church community. We hope to build on and reinforce e lessons taught at home. I hope you will give us e opportunity to do so. All children received a copy of e class prayers at will be learned in all of e classes. Our hope is at parents will work wi eir children at home in learning eir prayers. They also brought home e music and words to e Hymn of St. George. We plan to work on learning it during class. It would be helpful if parents worked on e words wi e children at home. Our Sunday School staff has set some very attainable goals but we can t do it alone. we need e children!! The children need you to bring em to Church. togeer we can succeed! Go placidly amidst e noise and haste, and remember what peace ere may be in silence. As far as possible wiout surrender be on good terms wi all persons. speak your tru quietly and clearly; and listen to oers, even e dull and e ignorant; ey too have eir story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, ey are vexatious to e spirit. if you compare yourself wi oers, you may become vain or bitter; for always ere will be greater and lesser persons an yourself. enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in e changing fortunes of time. exercise caution in your business affairs; for e world is full of trickery. but let is not blind you to what virtue ere is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. be yourself. especially, do not feign affection. neier be cynical about love; for in e face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as e grass. take kindly e counsel of e years, gracefully surrendering e ings of you. nurture streng of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. but do not distress yourself wi dark imaginings. many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle wi yourself. you are a child of e universe, no less an e trees and e stars; you have a right to be here. And wheer or not it is clear to you, no doubt e universe is unfolding as it should. erefore be at peace wi God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in e noisy confusion of life keep peace wi your soul. wi all its shams, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. be cheerful. strive to be happy. Thank you to everyone who participated in making is a great beginning to what I hope will be a spectacular Sunday School year!! 1927 prose poem by American writer Max Ehrmann
