1 St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral 650 Hanover Street Manchester, New Hampshire Tel Fax Thankfulness for our many blessings The story of the ten lepers, an account from the Gospel of Saint Luke that we are all familiar with, will help us to examine our own faith. It is a story about a number of people who had faith in Jesus. Some had so little faith, that they may as well have had no faith at all. Some had much stronger faith but they lacked an important element. And one had a complete and living faith as an example to all of us. The people of the village were not there to meet Jesus, but they continued going about their daily affairs. However, they were aware that Jesus was entering their town. Amongst the people in the village there were a variety of opinions about Jesus, some more informed than others. Some of those people in the village would be "believers" of a sort but were not ready make a commitment. Their faith was not mentioned because it does not count. They may as well have had no faith at all. "He who is not with me is against me." Nine of the ten lepers came as near as they could to Jesus, being lepers. A leper would stand afar off as they were not permitted to approach people or enter into the village. They were considered outcasts from society. They believed that he could cure them and they acted on what Jesus told them to do. But their faith was not complete because it lacked one thing, it lacked thankfulness. They took what they wanted but they too lacked commitment. Jesus gave them a new life, but they neglected to "return." Concerning the leper who came back, as we read in Luke 17:19, Jesus said to him, "Your faith has made you whole." Jesus said this in response to the action of the leper in the previous verse, he returned to give his thanks. As a foreigner, a Samaritan was considered a foreigner, he did not view the blessing as his right, he did not feel as though he were entitled to the blessing as the other nine lepers felt. The elements of his faith were that he believed that he could be healed. He came to Jesus and asked to be healed J A N U A R Y and he did what Jesus told him. And after receiving the blessing, the gift, he returned to give thanks and glory to God. His problem, leprosy, is a likeness of the problem of sin. Jesus "carried our diseases" in healings like this leper s and He bore our sins by His death on the cross. We need to have a faith like that one leper had. Believe Jesus can save you, have great trust and faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Come to Jesus and ask to be saved. God knows what we want, He knows our requests, but wants for us to seek from Him what we want, to be healed, to be saved. We must do what He tells us to do. Our prayers are answered, however, God does not just perform some act of magic, we have to act on our own requests. Glorify God in your new life. Like the one leper who thanked God for healing him, we too need to offer up our thanks to God for answering us in our needs. Who will you be like? Who will we be like? The villagers who maybe, who maybe believed but never acted? The ten lepers who came to Jesus and did what He said? Or like the one whose faith was complete, who not only took, but also returned to say thank you? Like the lepers in this Gospel account from Saint Luke, we too have been blessed by God, blessed with certain treasures. We have been blessed with gifts of knowledge and wisdom, with talents and with abilities, and we have been blessed with in many instances, our free and leisure time. Again I ask, which will we be like, the nine lepers who received the blessing of healing, who must have felt as if it were their right to receive and failed to thank God for the blessing. No, we will be like the one leper, the one who received the blessing of healing from Jesus Christ, and returned to give thanks. By giving back to God a portion of our great blessings of our treasures, of our many talents, and of our time, we can follow the example of the one leper who returned and gave back to God, he gave his thankfulness. With Paternal Love in Our Incarnate Lord, Father Wilson +Very Rev. Father Agathonikos M. Wilson (Father Mike)

2 PresiDenT s message Dear Fellow Parishioners, I hope we all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas, a time for our family and our faith. We need to remember why are we part of St. George, why are you reading this letter, for that matter why am I writing it? It s our faith, the belief yours and mine in something coming after we pass into the memory of those who loved us. We may be able to get there on our own but would it not make our life s travel a bit easier if we did it with others on the same journey. This makes sense to me and I hope and pray it makes sense to you too. As we approach the New Year and make the resolutions we all try to fulfill: lose a few pounds, spend more time with the kids, and go to the gym you joined. I have a suggestion, why can t we all join in one big resolution to come together as a community and as the Orthodox Christian people we are supposed to be. There are a few parts to that kind of commitment, coming to church, encouraging the rest of our family and friends to come too. Becoming a steward of St. George, financially sure, but giving us a little of your time and talents to help make it easier and share in the burden with all of us who feel the same way as you. It would include being a bit more tolerant, kind and forgiving to each other, while you involve yourself in the activities of your community. We all have busy lives and in the time we have, why not share a bit of it with St. George and those who want to welcome you to be a part of their life. We clearly had some accomplishments in the past year and it begins with the arrival of Fr. Michael, a warm loving priest who is here for you and your family. Invite him to your home, keep him informed of your family s health. Got a problem or an issue make an appointment to have a private conversation that will be kept private, he cares about us, all of us, let s use him to the fullest, he will welcome it and we will all be better off for it. I am happy to report that the stewardship is continuing, be generous of your time, talents and resources. We as a board have cut our deficit in about half and we are on a good trend, watching expenses and maintenance carefully. Renting the community center to responsible parties for good money. We are all sharing in the lower price of heating oil as your community uses thousands of gallons annually. We have also been fortunate with the weather so far. I do not want to say any more about it just keep your fingers crossed. Any review of 2015 has to include the wonderful results of the GLENDI festival, it was record breaking and is a real trib- 2 ute to the hard work and love so many have for St. George. Thank you all once again. All our wonderful workers, chair people, sponsors and media partners, it takes a lot of effort and coordination. Thanks a final time to George Copadis, Dick Anagnost and Cathy Moufarge for leading their community s effort. Hey its only nine months to GLENDI 2016 but more on that later, I ll get back to you soon. Some of our current activities have been going very well; the monthly family nights are well attended. So if you have children and grandchildren give it a try, get involved in the activities we are offering you will not be disappointed. Read your monthly bulletin and see what s coming up. Thanks to Veneta Tatakis and all the parents who want to raise their children in their faith and surround them in the proper atmosphere with those that care for them. A big thank you to John Stavropoulos our VP for leading the community s efforts with the dances, dinners and Taverna nights. If you have any new ideas see him, a real asset to his community. I want to thank Athena Bevan the Sunday School Director, the teachers and parents who did such a wonderful job with the Christmas pageant. The story of our Lord s birth was told in a different way; it was fresh and really demonstrated the love and commitment to the children. I was very pleased and I know the rest of those attending shared that feeling, great job. Please continue your wonderful work with the children; it s what keeps the community a community. I want to thank the wonderful Choir who make coming to Divine Liturgy so moving, we are truly blessed at St. George, thank you for your commitment and your love of the church. The Anagennesis Ladies who continue week after week to do so much to make it a loving, warm great place to be, I truly am thankful to you. Let s have a great year together for our community. A thank you to Ginny Tsirimokos and Kathy Koutroubas for leading our GOYANS. They have been very active and we pray they will continue with their good works. Also, a thank you to Jason Cote and Tom Tsirimokos for spearheading our Scouting Programs. They have been very busy and we know they will keep them engaged throughout the coming year. A thank you to Sam Awad for being here every week helping Father and getting our altar boys organized. Nola and Mark for the chanting, all the youth readers at the Liturgy helping Father. Speaking of Father Mike he s finished his 1st year with us and has demonstrated his commitment to us in so many ways. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful hard working, loving pastor with us, leading the way for a bright future at St. George I hope he s here for many years to come.

3 (continued) Thank you to our Board of Directors for really pitching in and doing the work of our community, a very dedicated group of men and women who love St. George and its people. Thanks to Dan and Joyce who are always there for all of us. Thanks Alice for always supporting me on my own journey, I love you. Happy New Year it can be the best year ever but only if we do it together, may our Lord continue to bless his St George Cathedral and all its wonderful people. See you at Divine Liturgy. Frank C. 4 called To be saints.... saint basil The great archbishop of caesarea in cappadocia January 1 Saint Basil the Great was born about the end of the year 329 in Caesarea of Cappadocia, to a family renowned for their learning and holiness. His parents' names were Basil and Emily. His mother Emily and his grandmother Macrina are Saints of the Church, together with all his brothers and sisters: Macrina, his elder sister, Gregory of Nyssa, Peter of Sebastia, and Naucratius. Basil studied in Constantinople under the sophist Libanius, then in Athens, where he also he formed a friendship with the young Gregory, a fellow Cappadocian, later called "the Theologian." Through the good influence of his sister Macrina he chose to embrace the ascetical life, abandoning his worldly career. He visited the monks in Egypt, in Palestine, in Syria, and in Mesopotamia, and upon returning to Caesarea, he departed to a hermitage on the Iris River in Pontus, not far from Annesi, where his mother and his sister Macrina were already treading the path of the ascetical life; here he also wrote his ascetical homilies. About the year 370, when the bishop of his country reposed, he was elected to succeed to his throne and was entrusted with the Church of Christ, which he tended for eight years, living in voluntary poverty and strict asceticism, having no other care than to defend holy Orthodoxy as a worthy successor of the Apostles. The Emperor Valens, and Modestus, the Eparch of the East, who were of one mind with the Arians, tried with threats of exile and of torments to bend the Saint to their own confession, because he was the bastion of Orthodoxy in all Cappadocia, and preserved it from heresy when Arianism was at its strongest. But he set all their malice at nought, and in his 4 (continued) willingness to give himself up to every suffering for the sake of the Faith, showed himself to be a martyr by volition. Modestus, amazed at Basil's fearlessness in his presence, said that no one had ever so spoken to him. "Perhaps," answered the Saint, "you have never met a bishop before." The Emperor Valens himself was almost won over by Basil's dignity and wisdom. When Valens' son fell gravely sick, he asked Saint Basil to pray for him. The Saint promised that his son would be restated if Valens agreed to have him baptized by the Orthodox; Valens agreed, Basil prayed, and the son was restored. But afterwards the Emperor had him baptized by Arians, and the child died soon after. Later, Valens, persuaded by his counsellors, decided to send the Saint into exile because he would not accept the Arians into communion; but his pen broke when he was signing the edict of banishment. He tried a second time and a third, but the same thing happened, so that the Emperor was filled with dread, and tore up the document, and Basil was not banished. The truly great Basil, spent with extreme ascetical practices and continual labors, at the helm of the church, departed to the Lord on the 1st of January, in 379 at the age of forty-nine. anagennesis news happy new year! 5 sunday school Dear St. George Community, Happy New Year! Welcome to 2016! The first few months of Sunday School this academic year have flown by! The students were busy in the fall with their lessons, preparing for the Christmas pageant and participating in our fall philanthropy project. We collected many pairs of socks for the Salvation Army! Thank you to all who donated and participated! In February, the students will be starting a new philanthropy project, which will run through May. Details to follow soon! In the new year the Sunday School program will be changing its schedule slightly. The students will arrive to church at 10 AM and sit in the front pews with their class. We welcome families to sit together in the front pews. Father Mike will break after the Gospel and speak to the Sunday School students. So far, it s the same. Here is the change the students will remain in church until communion. At communion time, those students who are prepared for communion will line up to receive communion. The rest of the students will proceed directly to the classrooms. This change will give the students minutes of uninterrupted class time. The students will be dismissed from Sunday School at 11:45. Regardless of when church is over, the 11:45 dismissal time is firm. I hope all the families will support us in this change. We are trying to improve the Sunday School program and provide more quality teaching time to our children. I want to take this opportunity to thank the parents and family members who are participating in our Sunday School program. If you haven t joined us yet, it s not too late! We welcome new students at any time. Join us in 2016! Again, I wish all of you a Happy and Healthy New Year! Athena Moutsioulis Bevan a Prayer for The new year Let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy. O Lord our God, who have placed times and seasons under Your own authority; who, in Your infinite compassion and goodness, have counted us worthy to enter a New Year of Your loving kindness, bless it and keep us in peace. Loose, remit, and forgive any sins that we have committed during the year that is past, and keep us free from sin in the New Year. Enlighten us with the light of Your truth and Your divine commandments. Establish in our souls Your Holy Will, and guide us to every work that is good and pleasing to You. Guard well our Holy Church with Your divine grace. Remember, Lord, our nation; train up the youth; protect the elderly; bring back those who have gone astray, and reunite them to Your Holy Church. Overshadow our Land with Your might, and grant it gentle rain and abundance of the fruits of the Earth. Speak of goodness in the hearts of our rulers; support and strengthen them, together with our Armed Forces by land, sea, and air. Let Your kingdom come upon us, O Lord; the kingdom of love, goodness, peace, and justice; and make us worthy to praise and glorify, with one mouth and with one heart, Your most honorable and majestic name, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and unto the ages of ages. 6 The TheoPhany / epiphany of Jesus christ January 6 About the beginning of our Lord's thirtieth year, Saint John the Baptist, also known as the Forerunner, who was some six months older than Our Savior according to the flesh, and had lived in the wilderness since his childhood, received a command from God and came into the parts of the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto the remission of sins. Then our Savior also came from Galilee to the Jordan, and sought and received baptism though He was the Master and John was but a servant. Whereupon, there came to pass those marvelous deeds, great and beyond nature: the Heavens were opened, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove upon Him that was being baptized and the voice was heard from the Heavens hearing witness that this was the beloved Son of God, now baptized as a man (Matt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:1-22). From these events the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ and the great mystery of the Trinity were demonstrated. It is also from this that the present feast is called "Theophany," that is, the divine manifestation, God's appearance among men. On this venerable day the sacred mystery of Christian baptism was inaugurated; henceforth also began the saving preaching of the Kingdom of the Heavens. schedule of services for The feast of epiphany service of royal hours of epiphany Monday, January 4, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Vesperal Divine liturgy of epiphany lesser blessing of the waters Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. Divine liturgy of the feast of epiphany greater blessing of the waters Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Divine liturgy of the feast of st.
