1 St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral 650 Hanover Street Manchester, New Hampshire Tel Fax M A Y CoME and RECEIvE ThE LIghT Come and receive the light from the unwaning Light; and glorify Christ, Who has risen from the dead. In the Old Testament God guided His people to the Promised Land at night by means of a column of light. When the column of light moved, they followed until eventually it led them to the Promised Land. In the Church we light candles, many candles, and we see the glow of the vigil lights in front of the iconostasion. We see the two candle stands at both sides of the royal gate. These candles, these lights remind us of that column of light God used in the days of old to guide His people. They remind us that even today God leads us to our Promised Land, to Salvation, to life with Him, through the teachings of the Gospel and the Sacraments. Every time we see these two candle stands at both sides of the royal gate and the vigil lights in front of the iconostasion, we should offer thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for leading us to heaven. The eternal light which is in front of the tabernacle on the altar table is kept lit at all times to remind us that the Lord Jesus, Who is present in the tabernacle, is the Light of the world. As He said, I am the light of the world; he who follows me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life. Whenever we see the eternal light over the altar we should praise God for sending Jesus. Without Him we would be stumbling about in the darkness not knowing where we are going. With Jesus we have the light; we know who we are, how much God loves us, and where we are going. Orthodox Christians upon entering the Church light candles. This is because we want to be reminded that just as Jesus is the light of the world so we are to be reflecting His light, His life, His love in our everyday living. We are called to be lights shining for Jesus. Sometimes we also place lit candles in front of icons of the saints. The saints were people who let the light of Christ shine brilliantly in their lives. Whenever we see these candles lit before the icons of the saints, we should praise God for the saints who reflected the light of Christ in their lives. Let us therefore, when we come to Church and light our candle and see candles, candles everywhere, let us thank God for sending Jesus to be the Light of the world, for the saints who reflected His light, and for the candle of my life which I will let shine for Jesus. May the unwaning light of Christ be for you the light that guides you in the darkness of the world today. Christ Is Risen! Truly He Is Risen! Father Wilson Very Rev. Father Archimandrite Agathonikos M. Wilson (Father Mike) PRESIDENT S MESSagE Dear Fellow Stewards of St. George, The warmth of spring and the feeling of a new beginning has finally arrived; the gloom of the winter has passed once and for all. The new beginning is also felt at our beloved community of St. George as we sang Christos Anesti with our new pastor, Fr. Michael Wilson. I hope you were able to attend services in what was a wonderful Holy Week of sadness and joy as we came together to profess our faith in the Resurrection and each other as we continue the work of our church. Holy week does not just happen it takes a lot of hands joined together for the common goal of making it a blessed experience for everyone. The parents who dressed up their daughters on Good Friday to the ones who got their sons here on time to serve on the altar along with our sexton Salim Awad. The wonderful choir under Cathy Moufarge, the chanters here all week: Mark Adam, Jason Cote, Nola Kalantzis, the ladies for cleaning and then decorating of our Cathedral and its most precious tomb. All those who put together the cooking / serving of Palm Sunday to Tom and Ginny Tsirimokos for the late night Pascha meal. The entire Board of Directors who really stepped up for their church as needed all week with the services at some unique times. Dan and Joyce for their efforts to keep things on track. Community is what I am talking about, we are in this together and the Resurrection gives us all the new beginning to turn the page and keep St. George moving forward. I hope we all feel the same way, I truly do.

2 PRESIDENT S MESSagE (continued) Speaking of working together with the spring comes the start of the push toward the GLENDI FESTIVAL, Where are you working and who can you ask for an AD for our program book. We have plenty of forms. Who is your hairdresser, or dry cleaner, who makes your favorite pizza or works on your car? We are all consumers and this is the opportunity for you to ask for something on behalf of your church. At the very least we can all be a sponsor of the festival, let s make it the biggest and best ever. I do not have to repeat we have a serious deficit and need to get the community on a firm footing going forward, please help your church in her time of need to ensure she will always be there to help you when you call for your need. The stewardship letters have been sent and I urge you to make a pledge to your Cathedral, we can accept the money from a credit card or any amount in a check monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, yearly whatever works for you and your family. The money is starting to come in but we need your commitment to St. George, your pledge for the future wellbeing of our community. Call up your adult children all those former basketball players and Sunday school graduates, all those past scholarship winners and let s get the membership back up to where we all know it can be if we just renew the commitment of those who we all feel already belong to us in spirit if not yet in monetary terms. We are in this together. I promised I would tell you of our financial total in the special collections we did for Fr.Baker s children after the terrible tragedy that fell on this family. We were able to raise $2,250 and will send that on to the fund set up for them and their future needs. I thank you all for the continued generosity of St. George. I want to remind you that the spring General Assembly will be held on May 17 and you will be getting a special mailing try and come to hear the various reports of your community and its health as we move forward together. Please keep St George in your prayers; we are in this together sincerely, Frank Comerford Frank C. 3 ThE FEaST of ThE ascension: ThURSDaY, MaY 21, 2015 The Feast of the Ascension commemorates the ascending of Jesus Christ into Heaven witnessed by His Apostles. It took place on the Mount of Olives on the fortieth day after the Resurrection. It marks the triumphant close of the post- Resurrection period during which Christ repeatedly appeared to His Disciples and spoke to them of the things concerning the Kingdom of God. Thus, Christ s human nature was taken into Heaven, wherefrom He now exercises all power in Heaven and on earth. The Ascension is one of the principal feasts of the Christian year irrespective of denominations. The feast day falls on the sixth Thursday after the day of PASCHA. The Feast of the Ascension will be celebrated on Thursday, May 21, 2015 this year. ThE FEaST of PENTECoST: SUNDaY, MaY 31, 2015 This is the fiftieth day after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles. The Church applied the name Pentekoste, the fiftieth day, to the feast celebrating this event which may be considered the birthday of Christianity as an organized religion. In days of antiquity, the whole period between PASCHA and the Sunday marking the fiftieth day after it was called Pentecost. During that time, no fast was allowed, prayer was offered by standing, and the alleluia was sung more frequently. Today, however, it is only the week between PASCHA and the Sunday of Saint Thomas, also known as Bright Week, where there is no fasting allowed. This year we will celebrate the Feast of Pentecost on Sunday, May 31, The day is very holy and no memorial services or Sacraments are allowed. On the Saturday before the Feast of Pentecost we traditionally celebrate the Saturday of the Souls with the Divine Liturgy and Memorial Service. Some consider Pentecost to be the Orthodox Memorial Day. St. george Board of Directors V. Rev. Fr. Agathonikos M. Wilson dean of the cathedral Frank C. 7 Dear Fellow Parishioners, glendi The month of May brings us one month closer to our single largest fundraiser as well as single largest social event OUR GLENDI! With 4 1/2 months until our celebration takes place I write to you once again to ask for your consideration in the ad book purchase of any of the following: Patron Page $25.00 Quarter Page $75.00 Half Page $ Full Page $ As you know the ad book brings a significant amount of money to the church and greatly assists with funding our many programs for the youth, adults, and seniors of our community. During this time the GLENDI customers can view for themselves when they pick up a GLENDI ad book just how supportive our parishioners are as well as all the businesses that continue to show their generosity even after all these years. past and hopefully for 2015 will set new attendance records at this year s GLENDI! 8 YoUR ChURCh CoMES To YoU IN MaNY WaYS hospital and Nursing home visits: Illness is a physical, emotional, and spiritual crisis. It affects not only the person who is ill or injured, but also all of those associated with the patient. As a result of newly enacted changes in the privacy laws governing the health care industry, the church office may not always know when you are in the hospital, nursing home, or rehab facility. It is important therefore to contact Father Mike at any time of the day or night should the need for medical care arise. Baptisms: Some time ago, Life Magazine carried a photo illustrating A Baby s Momentous First Five Minutes. It was a photo of a mother s hand reaching out to her newborn child, illustrating the love and desire she had to embrace her child. Every time a person is baptized, the hand of God s Love reaches out to embrace that individual. It is Divine Love that supports the Sacrament of Baptism. Infants who are at least three months of age are received into the Orthodox Church through this Sacrament. Please call the church office to make arrangements for your child s baptism. Chrismation: While infants receive this Sacrament at their Baptism, the Sacrament of Chrismation is the means by which other previously baptized Christians are received into the Orthodox Church. These adults will have attended catechism classes with Father Mike. Jesus said, come and See. There is no commitment unless you ask for it. Marriage: An appointment should be made to talk with Father Mike at least six months before your marriage, one year is even better. Couples who are planning to marry must attend the pre-marriage seminar offered by the Metropolis of Boston. Funerals: A psychiatrist recently listed five of the most upsetting experiences people can have and three of the five were related to death. Physical death is inevitable. During these times your Church and Father Mike are available to assist you in any way possible. In the event of a death, or an impending death, it is important to contact Father Mike any time of the day or night. Memorial Services: The anniversary of the death of a loved one can become very painful. The Church helps us to cope with this pain by encouraging us to have memorial prayers in the Church for departed loved ones on the anniversary of their deaths. For many Orthodox Christians the tradition is to offer memorial prayers at 40-days, one year, three years, and at five years, however, you may offer prayers for your deceased loved ones every year. It is also a custom to bring kollyva, a tray of boiled wheat, however, one does not need to have the kollyva. Trisagion prayers are offered if there is no kollyva. 40 Day Blessings: This blessing is for mothers and their roughly 40 day old babies. This service welcomes the new mother back into the life of the Church after about a 40 day absence after giving birth. The service of dedication of the infant is in keeping with the custom of the entrance of the Lord into the Temple by which tradition places at 40 days after the birth of the Lord. Please call the church office to schedule this blessing. house Blessings: It is the tradition of our Church that the Faithful have their homes and place of business blessed each year following the Feast of Theophany, or when a parishioner moves into a new residence, they invite Father to come and bless their home or business with Holy Water. This should not be a once-in-a-lifetime event, but a chance to welcome God s special presence and love into your home and your family. Confessions: The Sacrament of Confession has been practiced since the beginning of the Christian era. The priest invokes the Grace of God for the forgiveness of sins. We as Christians who live in communion with Jesus Christ are expected to examine our actions daily and to periodically avail ourselves of the Sacrament of Confession, a form of spiritual check-up. Through these means we humble ourselves before God and receive guidance from our Spiritual Father, the priest. Confession should be a positive experience and one that we look forward to. Confessions are heard by appointment. Pastoral Counseling: When people were touched by or reached out and touched Jesus life, they undoubtedly sensed in Him the power which comes from openness to oneself, others, and the whole creation. When people touch our lives, what do they sense? The noisy static of our harried times, perhaps? As an instrument for deepening relationships, pastoral counseling can help bring renewal to a person. If you have an issue or are just simply overwhelmed by the daily challenges that life provides, you may wish some further assistance. Please contact Father Mike in person or through the church office. Father Mike is also experienced in and has done extensive coursework in Crisis Intervention and in Critical Incident Stress Management and has a certificate of specialized training in Emergency Services and another certificate in Schools and Children Crisis Response. So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. (Luke 11:9-10) 8
