1 St. George s Episcopal Church June 2015 This is a free publication for members and friends Volume 21, No. 6 The Creator not the Created by Father Paul Allick As I write this in mid-may we are observing Rogation Days on the Church Calendar. These are days in which the Church prays for forgiveness, protection and a good growing season. Rogation comes from the Latin word rogare, which means, to ask. We observe these days on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the Feast of the Ascension. In the Book of Common Prayer you find the collects on pages This time of year many of us get out into our yards and do our planting. Most of us emerge from our winter hibernation and spend as much time as we can outside. We, again, marvel at creation. This is also a time of year when Minnesotans are tempted to forgo attending liturgies at Church so that we can spend more time up north or at outside events. This is ironic since it is God who created all that we enjoy this time of year. Why not take an hour to say thanks? The author of Wisdom writes, For while they live among his works, they keep searching, and they trust in what they see because the things that are seen are beautiful. (13:5, NRSV) We hear a lot about ecological concerns. This is good. We want to be responsible stewards of creation. The danger is when one begins to worship the creation instead of the Creator. We humans have made great advances in technology, medicine and psychology. And every time humanity gets proud about such things, we lose touch with God. When we get proud of being human we will start to worship our own intellect, status or the myriad of social obligations which we put in place of our Christian commitments. We forget that all we are enjoying was given to us by the one we are called to reverence. Again the Book of Wisdom, For if they had the power to know so much that they could investigate the world, how did they fail to find sooner the Lord of these things? (13:9, NRSV) Once as a young man I was on a walk with a Benedictine Monk friend of mine. I asked him how he could be so sure that there was a God. He said, Look around you at all of these people and this creation. It had to come from somewhere. For from the greatness and beauty of created things comes a corresponding perception of their Creator. (Wisdom 13:5, NRSV) St. George s Newsletter June 2015 Page 1

2 ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AT ST. GEORGE S JUNE 2015 Please join us Sundays at 9:15 a.m. in the Parish Hall June 7 and June 14: Episcopal Identity Presented by Father Paul Allick No one is baptized an Episcopalian. We are all baptized as Christians. We live out our Christian life within the Episcopal Church and the wider Anglican Tradition. As members of St. George s we are in communion with nearly 80 million other Anglicans around the world. We are part of nearly 2 million members of the Episcopal Church and 22 thousand Episcopalians in Minnesota. We will explore how this all works together and the history of how we came to be. June 21: The General Convention of the Episcopal Church Presented by Father Paul Allick The 78 th General Convention of the Episcopal Church will convene this summer in Salt Lake City, June 25 July 3. Come and learn how the governing body of our Church works and about the nominees for the next Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. EDUCATION CORNER by Heather Whitesell Sunday School/Youth Group Coordinator Children' Chapel Hard to believe another year of Sunday learning is under our belt. The children provide such stimulating and thought-provoking conversation! We wrap up the year in Chapel time with discussion around the Ascension of Christ and the appearance of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. A tremendous thank you to all who volunteered their time with the children this year. Youth It has been fun getting together with the group of young (and old) teens. We have done some impactful giving and gotten to know each other through our journey in faith. Confirmation We happily welcomed Jade Carlson, Nate Harmon and Sydney Norman into our community with a very intimate and impactful ceremony at St. Alban's. I was proud to be a part of their journey. 3 IN SYMPATHY by Patty Dittrich Parish Administrator Our sympathy is extended to the family of Mike (Mark) Paulsen. Mike and his late wife, Marj, were instrumental in the parish for many years. Mike was head usher for many years and made sure everyone was scheduled and knew in advance when they were supposed to be at the church. Marj was a huge part of our rummage sale, and no one could turn down a call from Marj about volunteering at the sale. Everyone who turned out for the planting/clean-up day at St. George s on Saturday, May 23. Thanks to Marilyn Clark, by Patty Dittrich, Geri Alberg, Bill Stromberg, Parish Administrator Gregg Jacobson, Kristin Malone, Patty Dittrich, Rachel Santos, David Sell, Kitty Reese, Diane McGowan and Carole Leonard. Many tasks were accomplished in a short amount of time. Each and every parishioner who has made it to St. George s during this construction time, a big congratulations to you. It hasn t been easy, but we are a third of the way through the project. JUNE BIRTHDAYS 3 Prince Yeakehson 20 Rosalie Michelich Karen Marie Cherry 21 Marion D. Volunteers need to arrive at 5:45 p.m. This is a great, fun volunteer opportunity. You can meet the children, engage in a variety of sports games with them, and families from the neighborhood, members of our police department, representatives from Perspectives and Project for Pride in Living, and other volunteers. St. George s is sponsoring three grill nights during the summer June 18, July 23, and Aug. 13. Please watch the Sunday bulletin and signup sheets for additional information on these nights. July 23 is a special night, marking the 10th anniversary of this program, with city officials, children from other programs, and lots of activities for the kids. Please note: all volunteers must complete a Perspectives background check. For information, go to #summer park. We are there to engage with the children. Staff members from Perspectives and the Police Department will take care of any other needs and concerns. Common sense boundaries are important, including not going anywhere with the children, not being alone with any of the children, and not forming relationships that extend beyond Basketball in the Park. Basically, volunteers are just there to have fun with the children and engage them in playing kickball, basketball, flag football, or the craft station. Look for a signup sheet in the Parish Hall. If you are interested in serving as the coordinator for this program, please let Deacon Eileen know. For additional information, please talk to Deacon Eileen. 4 2015 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES Congratulations to: Holden Hagerman on his graduation from Minnetonka High School. Addia Troyer on her graduation from Mound- WestTonka High School. We wish them both well in their future endeavors. GENERAL CONVENTION by Deacon Eileen Harvala The 78th General Convention of The Episcopal Church will be conducted June 25 through July 3, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The general convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church that meets every three years. The convention is a bicameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops. The work at convention is carried out by deputies and bishops representing each diocese. During its triennial meeting, deputies and bishops consider a wide range of important matters facing the Church. One of the important items on the agenda is to elect a new Presiding Bishop. You can learn more about the candidates at Each diocese of The Episcopal Church elects four clergy and four lay people as deputies to General Convention, and four clergy and four lay people as alternate deputies. Our deputies are Jim Huber, Sally Johnson, Gail Sheddy, Amanda Ziebell-Finley, the Rev. Devon Anderson, the Rev. John Dwyer, the Rev. Doug Sparks, and the Rev. LeeAnne Watkins. Alternates are Sue Treibenbach, Minnie Steele, the Rev. Janet MacNally, and the Rev. Michele Morgan. (See page 6 of this newsletter for photos and bios of the nominees for Presiding Bishop.) PACK THE PEWS: THE RESULTS ARE IN by Camille Schroeder Remember the numbers? In 2013, St. George s donated 631 pounds of food and $90 for a total of 721 pounds and dollars. In 2014, St. George s donated 345 pounds of food and $75 for a total of 420 pounds and dollars. But just look at what we did in pounds of food and $240 for a total of 769 pounds and dollars. Wow!!!! What a great outpouring of generosity. This will put a lot of food on the shelves. Thank you so much from the St. Louis Park Emergency Program. SUMMER OFFICE HOURS: Beginning Friday, May 29, the parish office will be closed on Fridays through the summer months. The office will be open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. ST. GEORGE S SUMMER CHOIR Come join us by Randy Egan, Choirmaster While St. George s Choir is in recess during the months of June, July and August, our Summer Volunteer Choir will take up some of the musical slack. The Summer Choir will sing on the last Sunday of each month: June 28, July 26, and August 30. We will gather at 10 a.m. on those Sundays for a brief rehearsal of the liturgy and an easy anthem then sing at the 10:30 a.m. service. All singers are encouraged to lend their voices to this part-time and rather fun endeavor. The duties are light but so appreciated by the congregation. Remember, you do not have to be an opera singer or a pedigreed vocalist to sing in St. George s Choir. Most of us have quite ordinary voices but put them all together and the blend is magnifique. God multiplies effort! St. George s Newsletter June 2015 Page 4
