1 St. George s Episcopal Church October 2014 This is a free publication for members and friends Volume 20, No. 9 RALLIED by Father Paul Allick I am writing this column in mid-september. I am still freshly reflecting on our Rally which we celebrated on September 7. What I enjoy about Rally is the sense of starting up once again. There is a newness to our coming back together to share in another program year at St. George s. Our music leaders, our children and youth, our altar servers, our Children s Chapel teachers, and so many more, all come back together in one voice to proclaim the Lord s goodness on this corner of Highway 100 and Minnetonka Boulevard. All of the fan fair, the decorations, the bagpiper and trumpeter, the grand procession, reflect our desire as a community to worship God in sincerity, beauty and celebration. All of the work put into the day reflects our desire to work together as God s people. The next step in our rallying is to seek pledges and other monetary gifts to build our budget for the year. My hope is that there will be much joy and celebration in this effort as well. We have so many gifts to share with one another. We have so much to celebrate. We have two very distinct and important liturgies each. Throughout the year I see many individuals and families taking full advantage of both services depending on their schedules that particular. It is wonderful to have these options. We have the quiet dignity of the 8 a.m. service held together by some of the most devout and fun people I have ever met at an early service. We have the musically enriched celebration at the 10:30 a.m. service led by our praise group, music director, choir, and artists in residence. They are joined by acolytes, lectors, ushers, chalice bearers and all kinds of people helping with hospitality. We also have the gift of an expanding and successful Children s Chapel. We have a well-attended Adult Hour inbetween these services. This is especially a gift for newcomers wanting to know more about our tradition. All of that is just s. I could go on listing so much more, but I will stop here. I am honored to serve a community with so much faith and commitment in serving the Lord s mission. I hope we are all feeling thankful and grateful and ready to keep sharing our resources to keep expanding our work. We offer our sympathies to The Rev. Dr. Mildred Cox and her family on the death of her husband Walter, who passed away on September 13, We also extend our sympathies to Harold Morgan and family on the death of his wife Carol, who passed away on September 20, St. George s Newsletter October 2014 Page 1
2 THE WARDEN S CORNER by Jane Jacobson, Rector s Warden We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community. Dorothy Day Were you there? Were you a witness to the energy of the Holy Spirit on Rally? If you were unable to attend the 10:30 a.m. service on September 7, allow me to give you a recap. Close your eyes and picture the sound of bagpipes. Now open them to see the church festooned with balloons and the most beautiful procession of banners, acolytes, choir members, children and clergy. Now add in heavenly music provided by a guest trumpeter, our Choir and our Praise Group. But I am not done. Now imagine the lilting soprano voice of Dorothy Benham singing the Communion Hymn and garnering applause for her efforts. Randy Egan, our Organist and Choirmaster, deserves accolades for enriching our worship through spectacular music. Fr. Paul commissioned and blessed school teachers, acolytes, new Lay Eucharistic Visitor (LEV) members and a new Lector. All of these ministries are supported by volunteers and we thank them. The body of the church has many members and our varied gifts and talents are used to the glory of God. The reason St. George s is a viable, Christ-centered community, is due to the determination, devotion, and commitment of the whole parish. All of us are being called by the Holy Spirit to share our Godgiven talents. Some of us convey our abilities in the lime-light, while a good many of us work behind the scenes. The point is, no matter how you choose to serve the Lord, do it unequivocally, freely and with childlike love. ADDRESS CORRECTION by Patty Dittrich, Parish Administrator Oops, we goofed last month. Dick Bormes correct address is as follows. Sorry, Dick Park Center Blvd. #814 St. Louis Park, MN EDUCATION CORNER by Heather Whitesell School Coordinator Children s Chapel is back in full swing. We are continuing discussion of the Church Year, and anticipating the beginning of Advent. It is good to be rewarded by the smiling faces and interesting comments the children provide. Preteen Group The young people met in the youth room on the second for rounds of ping pong, air hockey, and pool. The kids talked about ideas for service projects throughout the year. We are still thinking about a name for the group. Confirmation The older youth are back from summer break and met at St. Alban s for review of topics including Church history and the Bible as gleaned from our text My Faith, My Life. ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION FOR FALL 2014 s at 9:15 a.m. in the Parish Hall by Father Paul Allick Please join your Priest and Deacons as we explore the book, Questions on the Way: A catechism based on the Book of Common Prayer by Beverly D. Tucker and William H. Swatos, Jr. As we take our journey as disciples of Jesus Christ, so many questions come up. I have found this book invaluable in my private study and in teaching others about the Christian Faith.
