1 St. George s Episcopal Church June & July 2010 This is a free publication for members and friends Volume 16, No. 6 HOW MANY MINISTERS DO WE HAVE? By Fr. Paul Allick Who are the ministers of the Church? The ministers of the Church are lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons. (Catechism, Book of Common Prayer, p. 855) Given this definition of minister, we have over two hundred ministers at St. George s. Each baptized person is ordained to the priesthood of all believers in Christ s Church. Each baptized person is called to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church. We also have ministers ordained to the sacramental Priesthood. There is me, the Rector, and there are the Reverends Mildred Cox and Anne Scheible. Mother Mildred works in developing the Alzheimer s Ministry which is for the whole Diocese. She also supplies at other parishes and works as a Chaplain for the Minneapolis Police Department. Mother Anne is retired from her secular job and as a Priest on the Mutual Ministry Team at St. Mathew s, Chatfield, MN. Both Priest s have made their home with us and have offered to help serve in any way that is supportive to our mission. We also enjoy the support and companionship of the Reverend Yosef Hunter. Reverend Hunter is ordained in the Baptist and African American Methodist Episcopal Tradition. He serves at the Healing Station at the 10:15 Holy Eucharist. We are blessed to have these ordained leaders/supporters among us. Their service joins with the countless ways other ministers serve at our altar and on our mission with us: acolytes, musicians/singers, Altar Guild, Ushers, Lay Eucharistic Visitors and Ministers, Lectors and leaders of the Children s Chapel service. Soon we will see another lay ministry evolving among us. Some of our laity have expressed an interest in serving at the Healing Station on Sunday Mornings. They will assist with our ordained leaders. At the Healing Station we encounter the Sacrament of Holy Unction. Unction is the rite of anointing the sick with oil, or the laying on of hands, by which God s grace is given for the healing of spirit, mind and body. (Catechism, Book of Common Prayer, p. 861) The Sacrament of Holy Unction is offered for all kinds of healing, as the Catechism puts it, mind, body and spirit. You can also come forward to pray for other s healing by proxy. Each Sunday at St. George s we gather to experience three facets of our sacramental life: Holy Eucharist, Reconciliation (Confession), and Holy Unction. Often we add a fourth and have a Baptism. It takes the whole body of ministers to make this all happen. And so we welcome all ministers to participate. If there are any of these ministries I have written about that you are interested in, please do not hesitate to ask me about them. St. George s Newsletter June & July 2010 Page 1

2 WARDEN S CORNER By Kathie Brown, Parish Warden The Vestry is working on a new mission statement that will reflect our parish profile. You should be hearing about this soon. Next, I would like to see us brainstorm and look specifically at the areas of youth/children, outreach, worship and hospitality which were identified within the parish profile. Father Paul, Laura and I have been talking about the committee structure, as well as about raising up new leaders within the parish. We want to avoid burning people out. And we want to have more people involved in church committees with the understanding that there is a set, not an unlimited, time commitment when agreeing to serve on a committee (for example, two years). Specifically in regard to the Finance Committee John Stonhouse has stepped down as a member of the committee and as endowment officer after several years of dedicated service. We are looking for someone to take his place. If you have expertise or interest in either of these positions, I would be happy to talk with you about what is involved. The time commitment would be two years. Bishop Prior is holding gatherings of lay people around the diocese. Laura Harmon, Jeffrey Evans and I attended the meeting at Trinity Church in Excelsior on May 1. The focus was on networking with each other by sharing the strengths and weaknesses of each parish and then seeing where we can help each other out. You will be hearing more about all of the above items in the next several months. In the meantime, if you have any thoughts on these subjects, please feel free to share them with any member of the vestry. SUPPER CLUB FRIDAY, JUNE 25 Supper Club will be held at the home of Patti Wales on Friday, June 25, at 7 p.m. Please contact Patti at to let her know if you will be attending and what you will be bringing. Salads, main dishes and desserts are needed. NEWS ABOUT YOUTH & CHILDREN by Heather Whitesell Sunday School News The children have been continuing to celebrate the Easter season. We learned about Jesus as Shepherd and what our role as sheep may be. We also have been discussing a lot about peace. We talked about Jesus giving peace to the disciples and at the Last Supper. Then we had a discussion on how to create peace in our own lives and in the world today. Thanks to Jessica Monroe, Kris Kelley and Laura Harmon for helping out as teachers in Sunday school this year! Youth News The youth leader took a cue from Adult Education and decided to teach the kids about the Anglican rosary. It was a beautiful evening, so we spent it outside on the grass making our own rosaries and praying together. In August, we will begin a new two-year session of multi-parish confirmation classes. Look for more information to come! Sunday School, Youth Group and Children s Chapel will resume again in September. Have a great summer! CONGRATULATIONS TO ST. GEORGE S HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATING SENIORS Julian Mejia St. Louis Park Emma Eschweiler - Hopkins THANK YOU NOTE from University Episcopal Community Dear People of St. George s, Thank you for your generous gift of the collection from Fr. Paul s installation. Paul made a real difference in his ministry as chaplain at the UEC. I know he will there as well. Thanks, Jerry C. Doherty St. George s Newsletter June & July 2010 Page 2

4 Ann Wilson THANK YOU ST. GEORGE S from Patti Wales I would like to extend a very big thank you to all who helped with my brother s memorial service. I was so proud of St. George s their welcoming, the work put in by the kitchen crew and, of course, the service itself and those who took part. My brother and I shared something very special, and that was great parents. We both were very grateful to them. THANK YOU ST. GEORGE S CHOIR AND PRAISE GROUP We would like to say a huge thank to the choir and the praise group for sharing their musical gifts with us. The choir will take a break over the summer months. Thanks to Bob Miller for being flexible with counting the Sunday offering and fitting it into his schedule. I did find out that trying to count with a four-month-old on your lap isn't easy. Spending this time with my grandson, Sam, has been a blessing indeed. How fortunate I am to be able to spend this much time with him. I must admit it has been challenging. It is a whole new experience; one that I will definitely remember and cherish. So, thank you St. George's for making this possible. AUGUST CORN FEED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED by Laura Harmon It has been the tradition at St. George s to have a corn feed in August where the parish comes together for a fun event for the whole family. If this is something you would be interested in working on, please talk to Laura Harmon or call her at

BACK-TO-SCHOOL PROJECT IN AUGUST by Camille Schroeder St. George s will again be the site of the annual St. Louis Park Emergency Program s Back-to-School project in August. In preparation for this event, we need to collect new school supplies to be distributed to the students. While it seems early to be thinking about school starting (it s hardly over), it is a great time to watch for good prices on school supplies. Traditionally some of the best buys in school supplies are in July. Walgreen s and Target do a great job by having low prices on needed items. Zippered 3-ring notebooks, two-pocket folders without fasteners, Ticonderoga pencils, 12-count Crayola colored pencils, adult- size Fiskars scissors, and glue sticks are some of the most needed items. Good-quality backpacks for high school students are also needed. Please watch for these bargains as you decide just what you want to donate to the students in St. Louis Park. Also, think about volunteering to help out with this project. News of specific times will appear in the August newsletter or you can ask Camille Schroeder. Thanks.
