4 Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower FROM NATIONAL SHRINE TO MINOR BASILICA The Carmelite friars who initially established the National Shrine of the Little Flower were international men who were respectful of the ecclesial and secular authority of the Catholic Church. These men of great foresight, who envisioned a place of worship that would attain worldwide attention, have an important place in the universal church. On August 27, 1998 that vision was more fully realized when Pope John Paul II designated the Little Flower as a minor Basilica. There are presently only four minor Basilicas in Texas (San Juan del Valle in McAllen, St. Mary s in Houston, The Little Flower in San Antonio, and the newest St. Anthony Cathedral in Beaumont) and slightly more than 50 in the United States. Major basilicas are large churches that were imperial or aristocratic palaces during the pagan era of Rome. The emperor Constantine gave the palaces to the Catholic Church in compensation for all the lives, land, property, and money confiscated from the Christians during the Roman persecutions. The word Basilica means royal house and comes from a Greek word meaning hall of the King. Both are fitting titles for the National Shrine of the Little Flower, in that thousands of people visit the Basilica each year to worship our King and Savior, Jesus Christ. There are two categories of basilicas; The Basilica of the Little Flower is a minor basilica as are all basilicas outside of Rome. The four major basilicas are St. John Lateran-the Cathedral of Rome; St. Peter s Basilica of the Vatican; St. Paul s Outside the Walls; and St. Mary Major. St. John Lateran, the Mother Church, is the arch basilica for the patriarch of the West, the Pope; St. Peter s for the patriarch of Constantinople; St. Paul s Outside the Walls for the patriarch of Alexandria; and St. Mary Major for the patriarch of Antioch. Each of these major basilicas has an altar exclusively for the Pope s use. Only with the Pope s permission can others use such an altar. All basilicas have a special chair or throne for the Pope to sit whenever he celebrates Mass in that Church, and only the pope may use it no one else, not even a bishop or cardinal. A minor basilica is typically a church that surpasses other churches in size, age, and magnificence. Basilicas have always been known as the centers of spiritual and apostolic activity for the Catholic faithful; places where one can renew one s commitment to God and begin a new journey in faith. The basilica designation links the Little Flower Shrine to the Chair of Saint Peter, and, over the years, the Basilica of the Little Flower has blossomed as an historic attraction for the city and a place of pilgrimage for the faithful. After receiving the new status of basilica in 1998, several sacred objects were placed in the Shrine to herald the title of honor bestowed by the Holy See. The umbrellino or pavilion and the bell known as the tintinabulum are the two public indications of basilica status, which reside in the sanctuary. Both are ceremonial items that would be used for any papal processions occurring in the basilica. An umbrellino is meant to be held over the pope to shield him from the sun or the elements. The covering is made of alternating swaths of the papal colors, plain scarlet and yellow silk. The Little Flower s unbrellino displays its very own coat of arms, a distinction reserved for churches with basilica status. The basilica bell is used to signal the arrival of the pope or the start of a papal procession. It represents the building s belfry, being, in effect, a portable and elaborately mounted version. The bell is mounted on an intricately carved mast of San Antonio and topped with the papal coat-of-arms consisting of the tiara above the crossed keys of St. Peter. Custom allows Little Flower to display, as it does, the coat of arms of the current pope on a durable shield over the main entrance. The Basilica of the Little Flower also displays the pope s crest on the ambo in the sanctuary. Basilicas are required to meet certain criteria. A basilica must be ancient, at least in a relative sense, regal in character, a permanent church (solemnly consecrated), and spacious with rich appointments (fine craftsmanship). From a devotional standpoint, a basilica must be in some way a notable religious center. Little Flower certainly has been a religious center. From its inception in 1931, Little Flower was the first National Shrine in the United States dedicated to St. Thérèse. When it was designated a basilica, Little Flower was the only basilica outside of Lisieux, France to be dedicated to St. Thérèse. Our basilica is home to three first class relics of the Little Flower, two are contained within the tomb chapel of St. Thérèse. The Little Flower Basilica is filled with devotional objects; statues of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, of the Sacred Heart, St. Joseph, our Lady of Fatima, the Virgin of Guadalupe, the Infant Jesus of Prague, St. Anthony of Padua, and the founders of the Discalced Carmelite order, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. A basilica must be adequately staffed with clergy to allow for the frequent and splendid performance of solemn rites. The Discalced Carmelite Friars, who live in a monastery adjacent to the Basilica, celebrate daily Mass and weekly reconciliation. They strive, as best they can, to carryout the rites of the church with the utmost care. Since becoming a basilica, the Little Flower has celebrated with great solemnity, certain Church feast days, such as the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. Individuals who attend Mass on these special feast days (Red Letter Days) are able to receive an indulgence provided they are in a state of grace, pray for the pope, recite an Our Father, and honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was the spiritual devotion, deep faith, and financial support of thousands of people from all over the world, during the Depression Era that made it possible for the Basilica to be built. It is that same level of commitment that has enabled the Basilica to continue flourishing and growing. What makes the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower even more special is the fact that the Discalced Carmelite Friars could have built the beautiful house of worship anywhere, but they intentionally chose an impoverished area of San Antonio which has long been home to first generation immigrants from Mexico. Aside from wanting to carry out their mission of fostering the evangelization of the Christian body, so that all may be one in Christ, the Carmelite fathers wanted to enrich the lives of the poor by giving them a royal house to worship in. Little Flower Basilica stands above the skyline of San Antonio as a beacon of spirituality. Undoubtedly, Little Flower will remain a special place of pilgrimage for generations to come and act as aid to devotional life of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and visitors.

5 Vigésimo Primer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 27 de agosto de 2017 World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation September 1, 2017 Laudato Si : On Care For Our Common Home Statement on World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski Chairman, Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Bishop Oscar Cantú Chairman, Committee on International Justice and Peace United States Conference of Catholic Bishops September 1, 2016 Today marks the one-year anniversary of Pope Francis' call for Catholics to observe the World Day of Prayer for the Care for Creation. We would like to invite all faithful to join the Pope to pray for the care of creation, united with our Orthodox and Christian sisters and brothers of other denominations who already celebrate this day. We also respectfully invite members of all religions to join in prayer, particularly our Jewish and Muslim friends who, like us Catholics, see Abraham as our "father in faith." In his encyclical, Laudato si', Pope Francis called us to live out an "integral ecology," which in simple terms means having right relationships with God, other human beings and the good things of the Earth. When one relationship suffers, all the others will suffer as well. The foundational relationship in our lives is the one with God, who invites us to turn to him in daily prayer. It also reminds us that amidst the great challenges of global climate change, pollution in our local communities, and the deepening ecological and social crises all around us, we can relate to a Creator who is greater than any challenge and for whom "all things are possible" (Mt 19: 26). We can turn, then, in confidence to our Lord in prayer and ask for his grace and assistance. In friendship with Christ, we begin to look upon creation in a renewed way. Pope Benedict XVI spoke of a certain "reciprocity" between God and our care for creation, a concept which is developed further by Pope Francis in Laudato si': as we care for the environment, we encounter God, and in this encounter we are moved to care for creation. We are reminded of the Pope's insistence on practicing what we preach (and pray), and the need for Christians to be visible witnesses of the care for creation. We are called to an "ecological conversion" (no. 217), which must be rooted in Jesus' invitation to a change in lifestyle, reverence for others and a renewed simplicity of life. These personal transformations pave the way for the work we must do together in order to address the global concerns of our day. Finally, we would like to suggest a few tangible ways in which we can turn our prayer into witness. In Laudato si', Pope Francis reminds us of the "nobility in the duty to care for creation through little daily actions," and suggests various practical steps such as recycling, turning off unnecessary lights and using public transportation (see no. 211). So many of these "daily actions" occur in the context of our families and in our places of worship and work. We can begin, in these ordinary settings, to care in deeper ways for the good things God has given us. This attitude of stewardship, forged in daily life, will, in turn, allow us to participate in the greater national and international efforts to care for the Earth and for future generations. As we expand our work together as good stewards, it must be marked by care and respect for the dignity of every human being, especially the poor. Those who are impacted the most by our poor environmental decisions often lack the influence to have their suffering addressed. As Christians and people of good will, we must seek out their voices and extend our hands in help, making their pleas our own. The World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation is also an occasion for spending time with family and friends as we transition into the beauty of the fall season. We invite you to integrate experiences of creation into your day so that you never lose your wonder in beholding God's unmatched artistry. Whether we take a walk in a local park, visit a place of striking natural beauty, or even celebrate a festive meal in which we enjoy the "fruits of creation" grown in our own gardens, we can come together with loved ones to pray and give thanks to our Creator for the abundance of blessings given to us this day, and for our life with him always. Prayer Triune Lord, wondrous community of infinite love, teach us to contemplate you in the beauty of the universe, for all things speak of you. Awaken our praise and thankfulness for every being that you have made. Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that is. God of love, show us our place in this world as channels of your love for all the creatures of this earth, for not one of them is forgotten in your sight. Enlighten those who possess power and money that they may avoid the sin of indifference, that they may love the common good, advance the weak, and care for this world in which we live. The poor and the earth are crying out. O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty. Praise be to you! Amen.
