Ray Kelly and have CDs signed. Tickets available at Eventbrite: Fr. Ray Kelly is a 64-year-old parish priest at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Old Castle, Ireland, who loves to sing. He became an overnight internet star in 2014 when an amateur video was posted on YouTube. While presiding at a wedding, Fr. Ray sang Leonard Cohen s iconic song Hallelujah with the lyrics personalized for the couple. The video has since reached over 61 million views. After his big break online, Fr. Ray went on to record a couple of CDs. This spring he appeared on Britain s Got Talent, where he thoroughly wowed Simon Cowell, who declared Fr. Ray s rendition of REM s Everybody Hurts to be one of his favorite ever auditions. How did this concert come about? A friend of ours from St. Brigid s Catholic Church in San Antonio who s also a member of the Irish Society here sent an to Fr. Ray last year. She wanted to know if he would be doing a USA concert tour in 2018 and where he would be performing. In 2015, he had done a concert in New York City for the Irish Society on St. Patrick s Day. She wanted to know if he was going to do that again. She never expected to hear from him, but several weeks later he responded and said he would like to come to San Antonio during his September 2018 US concert tour. All par-

3 SAVE THE DATE Talks and Tours on Carmelite Spirituality at Little Flower Basilica The local chapter of the Discalced Carmelite Secular Order (OCDS) of the Province of St. Thérèse will present a series of talks on Teresian contemplative prayer at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Part one is scheduled for Sept. 8 and part two on Jan. 19. Both talks are set for 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and are free and open to the public, but registration is requested. To register please call the church administration office at (210) Get to Know Your Basilica tours, launched in July, continue on Aug. 25, in celebration of the 20 th anniversary of the declaration of the church as a Basilica. Tours are free and open to the public. OCDS members will be stationed around the Basilica 3-4 p.m. to provide information to visitors. Further tours are scheduled for Dec. 8 and Feb. 2. The presentations on Carmelite Prayer will be primarily based on the writings of Fr. Gabriel of St Mary Magdalen, OCD, author of Divine Intimacy, a classic work on Carmelite prayer and meditation. Divine Intimacy leads us not only "through prayer and meditation, but also through expressions of love, petitions and acts of thanksgiving, helping to transport the soul toward God," according Fr. Gabriel ( ), considered an expert in the writings of St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. His writings also include The Way of Prayer, a commentary of St. Teresa of Avila's Way of Perfection. The talks are intended not as information only, but to prepare and touch hearts, leading participants into an encounter with Jesus and encouraging them to seek God in prayer, said Jane Bernal, OCDS, one of the presenters. As Carmelites, we are privileged to have been given the precious charism of prayer, and we want to share it with all of God's Church. The primary apostolate of the OCDS canonical community apostolate is to share Carmelite spirituality with others. Membership in this religious Order is a lifetime commitment to prayer, devotion to Carmelite spirituality, and evangelism. The San Antonio OCDS has been active as a full community of the Third Order of Discalced Carmelites since In collaboration with the Discalced Carmelite friars, which is the only remaining contemplative religious order active in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, the local OCDS community is spearheading the development of Carmelite faith formation programs centered on the Basilica. The goal is to assist the friars in renewing the Basilica as a center for the evangelization of the Carmelite charism (prayer, silence, solitude, zeal for the Church) and in promoting instruction in Carmelite spirituality. 4 FEATURED ARTICLES JOIN US FOR The Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower! Monday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. The Carmelite friars who initially established the National Shrine of the Little Flower envisioned an extraordinary place of worship. On August 27, 1998, that vision was realized when Pope John Paul II, in a decree issued by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, designated the Little Flower as a Basilica. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Basilica s elevation to the status of Minor Basilica within the Catholic Church, as well as its placement on the National Register of Historic Places. The event is a Red Letter Day, meaning that the faithful may receive a plenary indulgence (their sins are absolved with attendance, receiving Communion, praying for the intentions of the Pope, and Confession). As a Basilica, the Shrine displays ceremonial items: the papal umbrellino and, to the left of the altar, the bell known as the tintinnabulum. The umbrellino sits to the right of the altar, half open in anticipation of a papal visit. In procession, the umbrellino would be carried over the pope to shield him from the elements. The original bishop s chair, an intricately carved wooden chair at the left of the altar, is specially reserved for the pope, with the designation. In 2000, Archbishop Flores named the Basilica the Millennial Church for the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The City of San Antonio designates the church as a landmark of exceptional historic significance. The Basilica attracts pilgrims from around the nation and throughout the world. Thank you for your donations to help replace the AC units! You may have noticed something going wrong at church, but may not have understood the cause. For some time, the AC units in the sacristy and altar areas of the church haven t been functioning. The loss of function in these areas impacts the performance of the main units: the system can t regulate itself. As the main units struggle to compensate for the overheating in the front of the church, out in the pews you may be freezing while the priests are roasting in their vestments behind the altar rail. Five years ago the heater units went out in the Basilica. We asked for donations, and many of you responded generously, coming together to raise over $50,000 to replace the units. This time, we needed a smaller amount, to replace the two smaller units that serve the front of the church. Your generous response has allowed us to move forward with ordering the units. The units will be installed in the coming weeks. Terry Staples arrived at Little Flower last week, completing a 1,400-mile pilgrimage by bike from Florida to bring the intentions of his parish for prayer in the Basilica. He is also raising money with his pilgrimage for the Paul Stefan Center in his home parish of Orange, Vir. This 23 bed facility for homeless mothers is nearly complete!
